Erwin Data Modeler is an enterprise modeling tool often used by government agencies and organizations to design, maintain, and implement databases to support enterprise applications. Government agencies and organizations usually select a standard data modeling tool in which they can consistently implement databases and maintain them. It provides a standard software toolset that all projects can use.
  • Generation/management of DDL.
  • Enforces standard naming conventions.
  • Builds logical and physical data models.
  • User interface
  • Many options available to learn.
Erwin Data Modeler is an enterprise-level tool and should be considered for managing large DB implementations or when aligning to an existing organization's naming standards/definitions/data types is needed. This is a key tool for a Data Architect to design databases. It is possible the cost would not make it ideal for small projects where scripts could be easily managed by scripts.
  • Standardization of Data Models
  • Generate Data Dictionaries
CA customer support and our account manager have been able to support us with any issues that we have had, from managing our serial keys to issues we logged tickets to resolve. There are aspects of key management that have made it difficult over the years but support usually has worked with us.

We are using erwin Data Modeler now for the ERD diagram design. We then provide the ERD to end-users or developers so they can make utilize it while designing their applications. We are also using it for some SQL Server change management. For example, when end-users request table changes, we then reverse engineer the existing DB or table, make the change, and then have erwin Data Modeler generate an Alter script that we can reuse once promoted to Production.
  • ERD diagrams
  • Publishing those ERDs for end-user consumption either on the web or PDF.
  • The GUI is a little clunky, even on the 2020 version
  • Overwhelming amount of options, which is good eventually
Erwin Data Modeler great when trying to model a relational DB that is well established and mainstream. A little less useful for something like Amazon Athena, which kind of makes sense. It makes handy diagrams that have lots of information but is also not very visually appealing to view. Further, it's a little obtuse to figure out initially, again due to option overload - sometimes I wish it had a 'simple' and 'advanced' view. It is excellent for automating diagrams and generating changes for existing DBs.
  • Would be painful to map databases without it, would likely be whiteboard otherwise.
  • It's kind of expensive, but licensing options are flexible and allow concurrent users.
Not listed, but I've only used alternatives built into something like the Squirrel SQL editor. That one is semi-functional but lacking many features and, in some instances, just plain wrong. The only pro there is that it's freely available and works over ODBC. I've tried some of the other free ones like Creately but didn't have much success.
They helped us renew our license and upgrade from 9.1 to 2020, which also allowed us to Decom our license server. Further, once we upgraded they gave a free overview class where my team could ask questions and see the new features. They've extended the offer to the future if we ever need a refresher. I haven't asked about any real technical issues yet, but I'm sure it would be a similar experience.

Erwin Data Modeler was used by our DBA and Data Architecture to design new data models and document the existing physical databases by reverse engineering them.
  • Creation of logical data models
  • Reverse engineering
  • Excellent communication tool in conversations with Developers and BAs
  • As a company, Erwin provides lots of tutorials and how-tos.
  • The main con I can think of is cost.
  • It takes time to setup and learn which is an adoption barrier.
  • Modeling of complex environments
  • Documenting existing databases
  • Communication tool between BAs, Architects, DBAs and Developers
  • Modeling and documentation tool for developing our Data Warehouse
  • It is difficult to assign a monetary value to it. The initial learning curve was fairly long.
  • It allows us to have better support documentation.
  • It allows ease of communications between functional units.
We, actually, previously used WebSphere Data Architect. Erwin's product is more flexible and has many more interfaces. It integrated well with Oracle, SQL Server and MySQL environments. It also has a better visual representation and better reverse-engineering capabilities.
We did not have to call for tech support, but there is a lot of useful information and "how-tos" coming from the company.
