What is F5 BIG-IP DNS?

F5® BIG-IP® DNS distributes DNS and user application requests based on business policies, data center and cloud service conditions, user location, and application performance. BIG-IP DNS can be configured as a full proxy to provide global server load balancing (GSLB) for applications and DNS across architectures, and across the globe.

The BIG-IP platform delivers DNS services with visibility, reporting, and analysis; hyperscales and secures DNS responses geographically to survive increased traffic or threats; delivers a real-time DNSSEC solution; and ensures availability of global applications in all cloud environments.

F5 BIG-IP DNS Features

  • Supported: Hyperscaled performance - Scales DNS up to 100 million responses per second (RPS) to manage rapid increases in queries
  • Supported: DNS Firewall Services - Validates queries, mitigates malicious requetss, and absorbs DDoS attacks
  • Supported: DNSSEC Protection - Protects servers from cache poisoning and man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks with real-time DNSSEC
  • Supported: Location-based routing - Routes clients to nearest data center with geolocation-based load balancing for application and infrastructure redundancy

For DNS service
  • Stable
  • Ability for customisation
  • DDoS Protection
  • In order to be able to provide DNS service, hope to see more DNS specific features. So far it still can be achieved via iRules, however, it still consumes resources

F5 BIG-IP DNS is the perfect solution to efficiently stop DNS-related attacks and distribute user traffic intelligently to multiple service-consumption points. With its tight integration with the local traffic management capabilities of BIG-IP LTM, it becomes super easy to direct excess traffic during peak usage periods to places such as a pay-as-you-go cloud (cloud bursting) so that user experience can always remain at its best! With its many implementation options, such as Intelligent DNS resolution (GSLB with WideIP), and Accelerated DNS resolution (DNS Express for Authoritative Answers, hardware-accelerated DNSSec, LDNS caching resolver) it offers flexibility and simplicity to integrate performance and security to any DNS environment.
  • Direct clients to the best possible app experience
  • Secure DNS infrastructure against attacks, including DDoS
  • Easily integrates into any environment
  • I'd like to see better reporting capabilities on the decision-making process for DNS resolutions. Currently there are plenty of log messages for that, but I'd like to see tighter integration into the GUI.
  • It could be an improvement to better discriminate features intended for AA vs LDNS functionality within the GUI.
F5 BIG-IP DNS is well-suited for any organization looking to improve their Authoritative and Local DNS security and performance capabilities.

  • The easy of importing DNS records into the BIG-IP
  • The ease of searching and locating records
  • The speed of creating multiple records when you need to duplicate effort.
  • The DNS dashboards to see requests and data points.
  • Error messages when you have incorrect syntax
  • Grouping DNS domains together in segments based on function
  • AI recommendations for better security in DNS
F5 BIG-IP DNS is at home when companies are merged and need to consolidate DNS to one platform. With BIG IP DNS this is where it shines. The ease of use and speed is unmatched.

F5 BIG-IP DNS provides intelligent DNS availability to enterprise applications. There are several critical applications that utilize this service and are able to assist with global availability and reduncancy. In addition to local traffic manager virtual servers, we also use non-F5 destination servers to provide this same level of redundancy. Thank you.
  • topology services
  • global availability
  • round robin
  • additional monitoring features
F5 BIG-IP DNS is well suited for internal and external DNS availability.

We use F5 BIG-IP DNS for Internal and External GSLB, our current solution is implemented On-Prem and In the Cloud. F5 BIG-IP DNS has enabled us to have active/active applications across multiple data centers, we have created specific delegations zones that process the queries for particular scenarios. A normal set up will be to use a CNAME from our primary Zone to point to the GSLB Authoritative Zone
  • Support for Active/Active configurations across multiple Data Centers.
  • Support for Active/Standby configurations across multiple Data Centers.
  • The use of DNS Express has enable us to reduce response times by having the entries on cache.
  • DNSSEC support and logging.
  • More support documentation will be a nice to have.
  • I have not automated DNS deployments yet, but it would be nice to have ansible libraries for this module. (I have used ansible for many others).
10 Rating, I think using F5 BIG-IP DNS for frontending the company DNS queries is a big must, but not all companies are doing this, instead they are still using Bluecat or infoblox on the front end, and only using F5 DNS for the GSLB functions. Perhaps educating the clients a bit more about this capability.

We use the appliance to determine network visibility between the two data centers. We have two data centers in Martinsburg and Memphis, Tennessee that we have traffic go through that provides support for our IRS customers so that it provides a domain name service, meaning a network visibility in between the two data centers.
  • It pinpoints as far as from exact name as far as the domain name of that virtual servers that we have, the virtual servers that we have going between Martinsburg and Memphis and allowing our clients to have network visibility in that aspect as far as what the role of that device is.
  • I don't think there's too much, as far as things done differently. I think the appliance is very reliable and if there was one thing we would probably look for as far as to have some compatibility with another device called Infoblox, which provides almost like that same type of service as far as being able to match the different C names, A records and everything that's loaded within that Infoblox appliance.
It's well suited. Like I said, it provides us, it provides the clients and the business environments throughout an Internal Revenue Service. The network visibility needed for them to provide their application and the use of their applications throughout the Internal Revenue Service and the enterprise, as far as IRS.
