Flowdock is being used by a specific team inside an IT department of Universidade de São Paulo. We use this software for team collaboration, specifics communications and quick file sharing. To avoid a lot of calls and flooding e-mail boxes during the day, a centralized platform divided in differents channels can be very helpful. We could easily improve team communication working in several projects by using channels functionality to separate subjects, to share files and contents of interest and to keep tracking our development and activities. When we need some past information you can just go to the software and search for this. Keeping a track (history) of our activity is really important for us.
  • Possibility to integrate with external services such as e-mail (send messages to a flow inbox from your e-mail), twitter, github, Confluence, JIRA, single sign-on, etc. Using those integrations you can easily improve your team productivity by centralizing all useful information in just one point.
  • Very easy to configure. You can get it running for your company or team in a few minutes. Furthermore, almost all platforms (Windows, Linux, Mac, iOS, Android) have an app to install and there is a web version that can also be used.
  • Powerful communication tool. You can separate differents subjects in to separated "flows" or channels. In addition, you can invite people to join just one channel increasing privacy for others members.
  • Free version up to 5 users. If you are a non-profit organization or have a student project, they say that is possible to work with that too. In other case, you have to pay per user/month.
  • One thing a little bit annoying is that a lot of links to others Flowdock sections (preferences, external services, etc) will open a new window/tab. Each click may take you to a new window and you can get lost easily.
  • There isn't a quick access list to members of your organization to start a private chat. I took a while to find how to do that. The interface and usability could be better.
  • There isn't an app for Windows Phone.
  • Sometimes you try to load some conversation and it doesn't show anything. It is not frequently but happens sometimes.
Flowdock is well suited for small teams and to environments that doesn't need too much reliability. I think it has some management problems that can make your life difficult if you have to manage a big amount of users. If you want just a tool communication with basic features (without using any integration or robust features) it can be suitable for you. You should try Flowdock using its free version for a small team and compare with others similar products. Flowdock delivers team chat and collaboration features, but is not necessarily the best product. Maybe some usability problems that disturb me won't be so relevant to you.

  • Increasing productivity by reducing idleness, e-mail flooding, miscommunication and accidentally deleted files. We have increasead about 30% our productivity since whe start using Flowdock.
Slack is a similar software.
Private chat or channels are well implemented in both softwares and both are also very easy to setup.
Besides of some usability problemas I think Flowdock is still better than Slack in this user experience and design.
The second point is the price. Flowdock is half price of Slack ($3/month). If you are a student or a non-profit organization, you are able to get some special license.

It's being used across the whole organization. It's how we communicate in real-time as each department/individual within the company is handling their day-to-day responsibilities. Flowdock is a useful tool for keeping up to speed with people within your team as well as across the entire organization. While there are other competitors in the space, our company chose Flowdock and have been quite happy with the result.

  • Overall UX - compared with Slack
  • Additional software integrations (as goes for all communicators moving forward)
  • Lack of Spotify integration
The fact is, Slack is in place to be better product. They're the big dog in town and are moving toward a public offering. I think CA Flowdock has a nice mobile experience and generally works the way it's supposed to but major competitors like Slack are pushing the envelope on API integrations and bot builds that automate a lot of great features. I think Flowdock approaches things from a more corporate stand point while Slack is casting their net toward smaller companies looking for cool features.

  • Our company uses it by default.
  • I enjoy the ability to communicate outside of text messages...keeps the conversation on in it's own bucket.
Slack is a better product. They're taking the spirit of the startup and moving quickly towards IPO. In my own experience, Slack provides enough software integrations with hope for future releases that continue to improve the product. The early days of Flowdock were very exciting but the product has turned into more of a corporate tool than a toolbox (a la Slack).

Consistent communication channel between teams, within teams, and all of the above. Our development team integrates some of their process management tools to keep up to speed. From a marketing perspective (my perspective) it serves as real-time communication between myself and my director. A tool like this is necessary in any organization and this is the one our team uses.

I don't think there's any skill to using Flowdock. Certainly there are more advanced features like plugging in APIs and such but it's a pretty team forward team communicator. As with any tool, there's a learning curve but this isn't the type of app that non-technical people will be confused using.

I go with the flow because I'm a newer employee and Flowdock works as advertised. If it were my decision to choose a team communciator for the organization, I'd recommend we go with Slack for its robust features and ever-changing/evolving software integrations. Slack is the outright innovator in the space and will continue to hold that role for some time.
Yes
I've used Slack with previous companies and it worked quite well. In fact, it works better than Flowdock in many ways. The ability to integrate 99% of our software workflow into Slack is extremely helpful. I could go on but it would be quite exhaustive as to why Slack is better than Flowdock. Lets say Slack is the disruptor in comparison.
  • Existing Relationship with the Vendor
I came on board to a team using Flowdock. This is the sole reason I'm using Flowdock on a day-to-day basis. I think Slack would be in my repertoire otherwise!
I wouldn't change anything. When you join a team with an established workflow, it's best to adhere to the way they do things. My experience with Slack doesn't hinder my ability to use Flowdock.
