What is Geckoboard?

Geckoboard is a tool for building and sharing real-time KPI dashboards.

Designed to help leaders surface live data for their team and across their organization, Geckoboard integrates directly with over 80 different tools and services to make it easy to pull in data and get a professional-looking dashboard in front of others in a matter of minutes. No coding or training required.

Users can build dashboards directly in a browser with a straightforward, drag-and-drop interface, and bring important numbers, metrics and KPIs out of lifeless reports and spreadsheets. Geckoboard aims to make key data more engaging for everyone, with visualizations that anyone can understand at a glance, and that update automatically to always stay up-to-date.

Highlight noteworthy changes in certain metrics using status indicators, which draw attention to numbers that are performing above or below expectations, and visually show goals you're working towards, in a click.

However a team is working, Geckoboard makes sharing dashboards simpler. Copy and paste a link to a live dashboard that can be viewed in any web browser, or invite teammates to log in, view and even create their own dashboards. For regular updates, you can schedule screenshots of a dashboard to be sent via email, or posted to a Slack channel at regular intervals.

For maximum visibility, Geckoboard has ‘Send to TV’, allowing the user to pair an account with a browser on a large screen or TV, and pick which dashboards will be displayed there. It can even loop through several dashboard on one screen. It includes instructions for how to achieve this in an afternoon using affordable off the shelf hardware.

Finally, Geckoboard helps track key numbers on-the-go through a mobile devices’ browser, where dashboards, formatted for smaller screens, can be accessed.

First dashboards can be built for free for 14 days - no payment details needed.

Initially Geckoboard was used by and for IT/IS staff exclusively. We used several (free at the time) dashboards to monitor system uptime, internal ticketing system SLA, ongoing project statuses (like AWS glacier uploads, file server migrations) as well as a somewhat makeshift Kanban board/task management system by using integrations from other platforms like Planview, etc. In fact, it was so quick and extensible, we often changed and added/removed dashboard frequently. We used wall mounted iMacs and rolling carts with HDTVs and Mac Minis to place dashboards when and where we wanted them. As the agency staff took notice, we began receiving requests from Project Management to create boards to observe things like deployments, website feature rollouts, app development, and client engagement and uptime displays.
  • Relatively cheap for what it is Over the years the pricing has gotten more restrictive but if you are rolling your own hardware (thin clients on TVs, etc.) and you are all local in an office it is still affordable.
  • Lots of different integrations that don't require coding. From SYsAdmins monitoring AWS or VPN functions to counting website visitors and engagement data to showing CRM reporting.
  • Clean and simple interface. Automatic refreshing that is browser independent.
  • Pricing model has gotten more restrictive such as limiting to number of TVs, etc.
  • The 'support' is bare bones, you will have to learn how to implement your solutions on your own.
  • Limited number of database connections means that we would have to pay a huge amount to keep all of our potential dashboards live at a given time.
Great value for the money. Excellent for smaller agencies with multiple projects and teams in a smaller space. We can quickly roll out mobile displays to help with a particular deployment push or monitoring a clients website engagement. It's also useful for showing live data without requiring analytics to run reports from a CRM, etc.

  • While we originally used this as an internal IS tool, we eventually have expanded it to be used by nearly every department.
  • Because pricing is monthly, we can grow or decrease our usage based on our current client needs.
  • Because it is low cost and easy to deploy, we can utilize it in place of considerable resources in analytics and reporting by delivering snapshots of data without pulling reports.
We are a Google shop and our Analytics and Reporting team have and use GDS. However, Geckoboard can output some of the same types of data (albeit maybe not as granular) and can be used by a wide swath of our users (including project managers, account execs, developers, etc.). We can also save and reuse boards for similar products and get our data in front of the eyes that need to see it quickly without a lot of fuss.

With a simple interface and available templates, creating basic dashboards is easy. Obviously depending on the data you want to visualize, there may be higher learning curves. That being said, they have a huge amount of integrations and extensible frameworks. If you are using anything made in the past ten years there is an API function or integration that can get it talking to the platform. As such, it's pretty easy to hit the main data points you want and get it on a cheap display in front of your team.
The support levels vary based on the level of plan that you have but that's to be expected. Virtually everything except the Enterprise plan has basic chat/email support. While they are responsive they are not going to be much assistance in helping you figure out API calls or implementing 3rd party integrations. That is to be expected and the support community can pretty much get you in the right direction if you look.

While the majority of our Geckoboard dashboards are accessible by most of our employees, there are a very small subset of regular Geckoboard users (primarily data analytics, hardware operations, and product management). In the oft-found overpopulated business tool scope, Geckoboard provides users with any level of data analysis experience to quickly and easily access a dashboard.
  • User self-help - the video tutorials and a robust publicly accessible knowledgebase.
  • Geckoboard can aggregate data from a number of other apps into a singular dashboard.
  • Sleek, dark UI.
  • No mobile application solutions (as far as I am aware). In order to share my beautiful dashboards with a non-Geckoboard account user, I need to hop on a browser.
  • No support for ad hoc reporting -- if this were a feature, I'd be happy to drive my presentations to executive staff purely as
A beautiful UI, with visuals that interest even those that hate staring at data. It's well suited for small to medium-sized businesses/corporations in which high-level sharing of data between teams is required -- the larger the distance between teams, the better as it's a great tool for level-setting on complex data.

It would be less appropriate for small businesses, or those that do not need to summarize complex data to share with those not familiar with the data source.
I find Geckoboard and Klipfolio to be in parallel in terms of performance and presentation. I will say that Klipfolio pulls slightly ahead as it allows for custom branding (great when sharing data with external stakeholders) and having access/edit control based on roles.

Geckoboard is currently being used to display relevant ecommerce stats to the organistion in general, starting first with IT, then has moved out to a wider audience. This allows users to provide focused, timely metrics to stakeholders at a glance, instead of having to dig into Google Analytics directly.
  • Simple to use and configure.
  • A good set of pre-built integrations to pull data back and summarise on a dashboard.
  • Excellent support! They actually respond when you ask them questions and are very thorough with their response.
  • A bit more flexibility in the number of columns would be nice.
  • Ability to scale to mobile device (web).
  • App capabilities are missing on Android.
Best suited for at-a-glance stats.

Not to be used for deep, long term reporting.
Geckoboard is just a lot simpler to use than the others I have used in the past.

Geckoboard allows us to see all out marketing metrics real time, in one place, across the entire department. We work in hospitality so weeks are like months. We use Geckoboard to see real time analytic data and make decisions on KPIs instantly.
  • The Price. Geckoboard is affordable simply stated. It's affordable for both large and small organizations.
  • The Service. Anytime I have had a question or want to share feedback, the Geckboard team has responded to me nearly immediately.
  • It's simple. Visually, the product has a great UI and is not overly complicated like many other dash-boarding suites. It's also simple to use, simple to integrate, and simple to understand.
  • Not a must have, but unless you are decent with CSS, some style options would be nice from the user end.
Geckoboard works particularly well for businesses well integrated with Google Ecommerce functions.
