We used iStock, from Getty Images at the agency I was at for both internal projects (our website, blogs, marketing, ads, etc.) as well as on behalf of client work that needed images. Some projects were larger-scale print or billboard pieces, and some were images for social media. It varied depending on the client scope
  • Image Variety

  • Quality
There are a lot of stock photo image resources out there, and a lot of the free or low-cost tools have SERIOUS limitations in finding exactly what you need. The nice thing about iStock, from Getty Images is that we could pretty much count on finding SOMETHING that would work for our project / needs, even if we had to refine it a bit.
  • Not looking too stock-like
  • Professional
  • copyright clarity
  • visual interest
  • client satisfaction
Again, I think when I consider iStock, from Getty Images I think of their tool as one of the more 'traditional' styles of stock imagery, but also one of the more reliable. While other competitors can have what we need 'here and there' I don't know that I can say confidently that they're quite as dependable to find what we need without a ton of time searching.

Best in the marketing for stock images, video, animations and audio!

In my organisation I am a Digital Experience Coordinator who designs content types and digital assets for a number of webpages or assists on other design briefs for the wider department. Often we don't have enough of our own in-house photography to meet the need or represent certain areas of imagery and thus need to find outside images to reflect the content or message.
  • It offers a large catalogue of images
  • Wide variety of images for different subject matters
  • Quick access to images when struggling to find suitable in-house examples
The best examples I have of my experience with iStock, from Getty Images comes from times I am creating prototypes or design concepts to show off a new content type or provide visual examples of how a page could look with the addition of good photography. My only downside is sometimes it can be a struggle to find organic looking stock images which is a key part of the brand identity we have.
  • High quality photography
  • Good stock videos
  • Stock music for social ads
  • Provided good stock imagery for really niche content areas, sometimes organic photography can be hard to replicate what stock does well
  • Helped to quickly gain access to advertisement ready music tracks when the marketing team have been stuck for audio
  • Allowed designers to provide high fidelity examples of brand styling or campaign ideas
iStock in my opinion is probably the leading stock image distribution service at the moment and has definitely become a trusted source for stock images, video, animations and audio. Unsplash has a better library of organic photography but can be a bit lacking as it replies on photographers having images of certain styles, though I like the concept and working closely to give exposure to artists. Adobe Stock is a newer service in comparison so it will take time to build the same level in my opinion but I am a avid Adobe user so will watch that space.

We use istock images for a variety of media for our learning apps, as well as for presentations to prospective clients. We take images or videos and create gifs and collages to create interesting visual assets that are designed to illustrate tasks or move the narrative forward for the audience.

iStock has a huge variety of stuff that allows the graphic designers we work with to have a huge archive to choose from. This lets them have great creative freedom and piece together assets that cover the brief, however the huge amount of variety means they have to be specific when looking for assets, as the brief they're given doesn't always match up with the images chosen- however this is more user error and learning than the product itself.

With iStock you get what you pay for, it's high quality, huge range, and diverse images massively helps my business get exactly the assets we're looking for and a decent price. Pixabay does have a good range of stuff, though nowhere near iStock, and the free images do help to keep costs down. We tend to use both free sites like Pixabay and paid sites like istock to cover our asset choices whilst staying in budget. iStock has the type of assets that can be more unique or tricky to find whereas Pixabay has the generic "tree" "coffee table" type things.

iStock has a wide variety of imagery and I can almost always find what I'm looking for or better. I feel that they keep their selection fresh and updated and I like the way the search tools work, the purchasing packages, and it seems to just work great for my business. I prefer iStock over other stock platforms for all these reasons.
  • search features
  • similar image search features
  • style
  • fresh assortment - updated and on trend
  • wide variety
I use iStock for photos, illustration, and also sometimes for video (But not as much since we don't work much in video). It's great for print, web, making animations, social media, getting inspiration, and I really like how when searching one thing often leads me to another and I find things I didn't know I was looking for but I try them out and it works great.
  • variety
  • fresh selection
  • ease of use
  • iStock makes it easy for me to help our clients get great imagery at minimal cost
  • clients appreciate that there is no roadblock to obtaining great imagery
  • its efficient ease of use makes it easy to use on the fly
Compared to these others I feel that iStock has better variety and selection, better ease of use/interface/search features, fresher selection, and better pricing options. I don't like that Adobe Stock only has subscription options (last I checked) and I do not use them for that reason. I don't like the interface of Shutterstock as much and it's harder to download a test image to try out.
