Kerio Control is our go to Firewall for Client sites, its low cost and high number of features make it a perfect choice for small to medium businesses. Its ease of use makes it easy to train our technicians on how to setup, use, and troubleshoot problems on the rare times they arise.
  • VPN for Remote Employees
  • Point to point VPNs
  • Scanning of traffic
  • Ease of management
  • Website filtering by both sites and key words
Cons
  • Support can take longer to respond that it should
  • Could work better with resellers
  • Spend more effort on adding new features
IT works very well in the non-profit and small business space when there is a need for remote access or connecting several sites in a point to point VPN, user management and rule creation are very easy. The use of the MyKerio website for remote management also makes it easy to troubleshoot problems and make changes if technical staff are not onsite.

  • Easy to use makes it easy to train, reducing employee time and IT staff costs.
  • Statefull inspection and web filtering greatly reduce malware incursions.
  • Fact it can run on standard PC hardware greatly reduces cost to implement and makes scaling much less expensive.
We found Kerio Control to provide the most features and easiest management of all the solutions we looked at, while cost was not the lowest the value was by far the best when you considered all the factors, costs, and manhours involved in deployment and management.
Yes
ZyXel Zywalls - We needed a solution that offered more features and was easier to remotely manage.

At the time we actually choose it because of the great customer support, you could easily get a hold of an experienced tech who know the product, and those techs had direct access to the developers if needed.
We would probably still use the product but its hard to say for sure, in the beginning it was the quality of support that drew us to the product. While we now know how to maintain the product ourselves it can be frustrating when we do need support but it is slow and makes you jump through many hoops. We often find the solution before support does.
Support is very slow to respond and it takes a long time to convince level 1 techs that you need to be moved up to someone more senior. I believe support is outsourced and they are graded on how few tickets they need to escalate to higher tiers so they will try to figure out a solution even if it is detrimental to the overall support experience.
Premium support is not offered, it is a subscription based license so either you have a valid subscription and you have support or you do not and the product does not work.
Yes
No I found a workaround and abandoned the ticket.
Who is Aurea? I buy my product from a distributor, who buys it from GFI... I have sold the product for 10 years and have never heard the name Aurea before. Update: Well looks like they bought GFI software at some point... would have been nice if we got an announcement or something.
Very easy to use and manage, user training takes less then 10 minutes. Technicians can perform basic tasks with less then an hour of training and can master it in under a year.
  • VPN Connections
  • Setting up website filtering
  • User Management
  • Firewall Rule Creation
  • Very complex firewall rules can be a little tricky to set up because the simplified UI does not give you full access to some things.
