Google Analytics is perhaps the best-known web analytics product and, as a free product, it has massive adoption. Although it lacks some enterprise-level features compared to its competitors in the space, the launch of the paid Google Analytics Premium edition seems likely to close the gap.https://media.trustradius.com/product-logos/Du/bb/UP417EGQ7C6Z.PNGGoogle Analytics should be everyone's first web analytics solutionOur business is an online website. We use Google Analytics to track site traffic, overall engagement on the site, key events that happen -- all with an aim toward understanding our user base and what is working and not working on our site and our efforts to increase traffic and engagement (and monetization!),Aggregates statistics along multiple dimensions for quick analysis -- geography, traffic source, campaigns, landing pages, etc. With goal tracking, it allows you to see conversion rate metrics (be they site registration, purchase, or whatever) across various landing pages or audience segments It's very simple to create sets of queries and group them together in dashboards of key metrics and trends and share them with colleagues across the organization,Google Analytics does allow you to filter results based on a primary or secondary dimension (e.g. landing page and source) -- but it would be better if the user could pick finer grained segments utilizing more dimensions (e.g. "visitors from Canada who visited Landing Page X via Inbound Referral Link) Comparing results over time (week on week, etc) should have shortcuts for common analyses (vs same day last week, vs same month last year, etc) With Google Analytics (and all their products really), Google will change things by adding functionality or changing the names of concepts (recently they changed "Visits" to "Sessions") without so much as a peep alerting the user base. While most of the changes are for the better, a heads-up would be professional and appreciated.,8,We spend far less time assembling quick views of web data for ad hoc analysis than we otherwise would. We are able to track website conversions at a fairly high granularity with far less effort than we would otherwise require Because it's free we can give access to Google Analytics to all our employees and bring more transparency to our operational performance and enable the curious to discover new insights.,,6,1,Analyze web traffic (visits, pageviews) by source Analyze site engagement (pageviews, time on site, bounce rate, etc..) by source and page type Analyze conversion rates (site registrations, purchases, etc) by source and page type,We developed a widget that allows other sites to embed pieces our content (as a teaser to click through to our site). By setting up a separate Google Analytics instance for exclusive use by the widget, we can isolate views and clickthrough rates on the widget without having to filter them out of our other site traffic (which we would have to do by default everywhere otherwise). So my suggestion is make use of the ability to setup multiple Google Analytics instances where appropriate. By using non-interaction events, we are able to measure engagement and time on pages that would otherwise count as bounces with zero duration. This is important for separating the effect of a true bounce (this page wasn't useful to the user and they immediately left) from a softer bounce (they came and read the page for 5 minutes but then didn't see anything else interesting and so left the site). We set a threshold internally and ping the GA server every 30 seconds or so but only send interaction events after a minute to ensure the person was really engaged before we "debounce" them. With Universal Analytics, we're able to send analytics events from the server side of our application to the same Google Analytics instance, which can be very useful in avoiding client-side race conditions and other threading issues. UA can also be used for tracking across not just server (vs client/browser) but mobile apps as well. If you haven't upgraded your Google Analytics instance to Universal, you should.,We plan to make use of the audience segmentation features (to differentiate between behavior of registered vs non-registered users). We plan to make broader use of the Content Segmentation features which are quite handy when you have a site like ours that is dynamically generated and contains tens of thousands of pages (and growing).,10,No,Price Product Features Product Usability Prior Experience with the Product Vendor Reputation,I would not have spent as much time looking at KISSmetrics honestly. We may revisit it as an add-on for deeper dives into individual user behaviors but Google Analytics gives you a lot of runway for instrumenting, analyzing, and improving a site (or app) well before you need to think about replacing or adding to it.,8,If you've got a large or complex site that's dynamically generated, make use of the content groupings dimensions which will make it far easier to track behavior. It's permission based roles allow us to assign users for overall use, dashboard or reporting only, etc. We can also create users and dashboards corresponding to specific sites, regions, or products. Sure, there are things GA can't do that others can, but we find the reverse is also true. Overall GA is a very good and helpful tool especially with it's recent updates from late 2013 to the Universal Analytics engine.,It's free. Can't beat the price. It would be nice to see more Social sentiment in the GA system. This is an up and coming area that many are now adding to their tools, but most of the algorithms are so-so. Permissions are a little wonky. While a slimmed-down version of this functionality is still available through Google Webmaster Tools, the need to utilize multiple tool sets is limiting and unintuitive. Without some research and understanding of how Google Analytics Event Tracking works, I feel that there is minimal support or explanation of how to track downloadable content on your sites. This is a major shortcoming, and something that Google should make more obvious. It's free, it's fairly accurate, and it's the benchmark everyone knows and uses for things like Unique Views and Page Views.,Charts and graphs are good in GA. You can load your presentation or report with hard numbers and nice charts. BUT, this is also the problem with GA, there are so many charts and graphics, and they look so good, you sometimes forget you have to actually analyse them and make actionable suggestions for improvement. The basic numbers from 50,000 down to granular analysis are all available in GA. You can build very sophisticated dashboards, lead funnels, and eCommerce reports inside GA. The learning curve for these types of uses are high, but free and extremely valuable. Connecting AdWords, AdSence and your eCommerce wins to GA, gives you a massive overview of your digital business.,Don't rely too much on the top-level dashboards. They are nice and broad, but often don't give you much to go on for building recommendations. The eCommerce connection between GA and your shopping process is not always accurate and may take several tries to get it working. Just reporting the presentation of a Receipt page does not really equal a definitive sale. The depth of the rabbit hole in GA is amazing. You can spend hours, days, weeks, building tools and maps and strategies, and still miss the actionable goals. Don't be mesmerized by the charts and graphs either. Dig into the WIN for your client, and focus all your efforts there.,10,You've got to know GA inside and out. If you stay focused on actionable recommendations rather than just reporting you will be a long way towards building success for your clients. Google can spotcheck your sales/leads funnel. Set it up. Check it. Refine your process. See if you see the results you want. The ROI on GA is up to you. But don't rely too heavily on GA's sales funnel reporting. You'll need to pull the numbers into excel to do some heavy evaluations.,,10Don't Want The Best Free Analytics Software? Don't Get Google Analytics!Google Analytics is being used by our organization like most businesses use it - to track daily activity on our website. Primarily, the marketing department uses GA to monitor traffic patterns and track sources for goal conversion. Information gathered from GA is then shared with sales and operations as necessary to make business decisions. GA allows us to know what traffic we are getting to our website, where it is coming from, and how that traffic is contributing leads to our sales funnel.,Monitors website traffic patterns. If you don't have a handle on where or how your website is getting traffic, I can't think of a better tool to use to get that information. Tracks goal conversions. If you have a specified path you want visitors to take to complete an action on your website, GA does a great job of reporting to you how many times that path has been completed. Integrates with other Google tools. If you aren't using Analytics, but are running AdWords campaigns or monitor site health in webmaster tools, Google allows you to sync them all together.,Google used to tell us keyword referrals. Kind of annoying that they don't anymore, but life goes on. They change the names of important metrics from time to time, generally into more ambiguous names. Again, kind of annoying, but a couple Google searches will bring up 100s of SEO blogs that tell you what means what - so not the end of the world here, either. It doesn't tie-in (yet) with other Google tools like YouTube Analytics and Google+, or Google My Business. So in some cases you still need to monitor information from multiple areas of your Google-verse.,10,Allowed us to determine what traffic sources are generating our web leads. Allowed us to spot traffic trends on our website and determine how to better navigate our site for improved user experience. Allowed us to create an editorial calendar for our blog to better serve our customer needs.,10Google Analytics - Why aren't you using it?Currently, I am using Google Analytics for my Web Development clients. Google Analytics has enabled me the ability to provide my clients improved reporting on each of their respective channels. In addition to that, we can perform extensive AB testing throughout the site to optimize acquisition, user behaviour and flow. It is extremely helpful in analyzing cart abandonment rates, etc.,Google Analytics is extremely simple to implement, no matter what web environment you are developing in. Out of the box, Google Analytics provides a great deal of information that is organized in a logical manner. The information is presented in an easy-to-read format. Each report is easily "exportable." Implementing custom attributes and conversion goals is relatively simple. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how to setup your channels, etc.,They could simplify custom reporting. Especially when using customized data and drill downs. It is simple as it is, but at times, doesn't seem very flexible. Goals are currently limited to 20 (unless you pay.) Analytics Premium is costly, but not compared to some of the other major players. Google is constantly upgrading the user experience for Google Analytics. The good, is that they are improving it. The bad, if you only login to GA once a month, you may fumble around looking for features/options that you once knew.,10,GA has only had a positive impact for myself and my clients. Utilizing the data from Google Analytics, we have been able to optimize landing pages, shopping carts, and content to only improve our acquisition, reduce abandonment rates and follow through with successful conversions.,,9The Standard Analytical Tool for Just About Any WebsiteI'm using Google Analytics to gather information for both my own website and the websites of my clients. It's mainly being used for finding the total number of page views, unique visitors and referrals from outside URLs. The majority of the time, I'm using it just for the basic tasks and don't get into the minutia as much.,It's great for detail oriented reports on web traffic and related info. The maps indicating where users are coming from are particularly useful. Very easy to create custom reports. Easy integration with just about any type of website. Ability to distinguish between mobile and desktop users.,The fact that so many search terms have now been blocked out of Google Analytics is a little troubling. Even as a long time web professional, I still get confused about how to setup goals and other, more complicated features. Documentation is not always as clear and concise as it could be. When integrating with WordPress, it's better to use a plugin to help turn on some of those extended features.,8,Finding out where a site's visitors are coming from, where they clicked and how long they've visited can be crucial to determining what's working and what isn't. While it's great to have some of the in-depth information, there are some people who tend to live and die with it a little too much. Perhaps spending too much time with Analytics and not enough time truly improving their site. In other words, it can be a bit of a trap! The target audience is essentially the entire nation: youth, parents, educators, students, graduates, job seekers all the way through +30 year professionals and everyone in between. Google Analytics comes into to play when we monitor site traffic and the activity trends over time. It allows us to support arguments for content strategies, interface layouts, outreach and promotional activities and more. And frankly, it serves as a yardstick for the success of our site and content. Having an understanding of who the actual audience is is becoming more accessible through products like Google Analytics. Also, the depth of what you can learn from the end-users is only increasing as the product continues to evolve.,For live programming, it allows you to monitor live traffic - IP location, browser, device, language, etc. - and understand the impact of specific marketing campaigns via referrals Google Analytics has competition but blows most, if not all of it, out of the water largely in part to being part of the Google Suite but also because it's one of the first analytics tools to cater to non-technical users and really bridge the gap between back-end analytics experts and front-facing digital content specialists. It continually evolves, improves, enhances, and adapts to the ebb and flow of the user base and digital landscape. Not using for a couple months may yield a pleasant surprise when you return to using the product (new features, better data visualization, etc.),Simplifying tutorials and how-to guides would definitely help beginners. Integrating Google Analytics to data visualizations that are more in line with Prezi animations rather than PowerPoint-esque graphics would be greatly beneficial to analysts! Updating the user interface to be less overwhelming to first-time users,10,POSITIVE: The overall understanding of how the site performs, end-users interact, and content gets digested is vital for any digital strategy and Google Analytics is a very reliable tool that can have as simple or complex of a utility as the user makes it.,Adobe Connect,Facebook Insights,10Google Analytics is the Go-To Web Analytics PackageAs a digital marketing agency, we use Google Analytics to track traffic, and conversions (as well as other KPIs) for the digital marketing efforts we run. It is used by every account person in our organization as we recommend it for all of our clients if they are not using it when we sign the contract (which is very few that were not using prior to our engagement). It provides full data into visits, conversions and revenue data for our clients.,Allows for robust reporting of web visitors. Allows for customization with use of filters, profiles, segments, etc. We are not stuck with the defaults. Using advanced techniques, we can customize it easily. It is free.,While I love the customization, some of it is very technical to put into place. This can be troublesome for non-technical folks. For larger websites with more traffic, there can be a sampling issue with the data.,10,While data can be delayed by 24 hours, generally on smaller sites it isn't and you can get a clear picture of how the day is going when running a special promotion and such to make educated decisions on your marketing campaign. The API integrates well with tools and is generally reliable, so I can pull in data into a bid management tool, an excel spreadsheet and a lot more through the API, but can still do a one-off export. In the 6 years I have aggressively used Google Analytics, I only remember less than 5 instances of problems, and all were corrected in timely fashion. It continues to evolve.,,10Use Google Analytics and Get to WorkWe're a B2B/B2C hybrid, and we use Google Analytics as a way to understand traffic source, conversion, order value and all ecommerce metrics. This also helps us understand the greatest marketing effort in brick and mortar. I also use it to understand +/- by key dates, periods and sales events. I oversee all marketing and ecommerce, and these are the only departments using Google Analytics.,Great way to comp dates and events without pulling internal reports. My internal reporting is less than stellar, so I use GA to reference AOV and conversion rates. I use GA to identify traffic sources, which helps me understand where to spend my marketing budget as well as the effectiveness of campaigns, social media posts, etc.,I've had a handful of occasions where I get an error, a la "data unavailable" or temporary outage. It generally remedies itself, but when I'm asking for date I'm not in a waiting mood. When comping dates, I'd like more than one range available. For example, if I want to comp this week vs last week, I also want to see this week vs last week vs same period last year vs another week last year (in order to account for shifts in holidays etc),9,I understand where my traffic is coming from, which tells me whether what I'm doing is effective. For example, if I post and push a major social media event and GA confirms its effectiveness, I funnel more dollars into social. GA provides internal data points. In any corporate environment, opinions and intuition can get in the way of the facts. I use GA to call out the differences and to do the right thing for the business. The new features from the Universal Analytics update in late 2013 make the tool that much more useful. There are still unexplored features to consider and all of it amounts to more power and ability to gain insight into your site, what the traffic there is doing, where is came from and where it is leaving to. All stuff eMarketing and web managers will want.

Our company is very likely to renew our use of Google Analytics because it provides easy access to detailed website data that multiple employees use on a regular basis. The strongest thing Google Analytics has going is that it's a free, yet powerful tool for inbound marketers. It is a great initial step to take when determining campaign effectiveness and provides a pulse of your audience in the form of many easy to digest metrics. With features touching SEO, email CTR and visitor profiling it is an ideal tool for small to medium sized businesses or start-ups.

Having used Google Analytics for the last 9 years, I have no intention of discontinuing my service. Google Analytics is a fantastic product that provides me with almost everything I could wish for. The positives in this product outweigh any negatives that you might find. I can not think of a single reason to not immediately start using Google Analytics for your business.

As long as our requirements of Google Analytics remains in the same proximity, I will continue to use and renew my use of Google Analytics. If it comes to a point where we are reaching a bazillion hits a month and require tracking thousands of channels, we may look at other solutions based on cost.

It really is the de-facto standard. While there are some other products out there (both free and paid versions), Google Analytics is simply ubiquitous. And, despite some of its flaws, I think it deserves to be at the top for the time being. In its most basic form, it's hard to argue with a free tool that can give you just about any sort of information you're looking for.

We would continue using Google Analytics because it just works. After setting up the tracking property, it's just a matter of sitting back and letting it collect data.
Once the data is collected, it's time to analyze trends, spot problems, and make decisions for future actions.

I give Google Analytics a 10 out of 10 when being asked if I will reuse it because I'm a web developer, and it greatly increases customer service at my place of employment due to how we put it to use. This information has been covered previously above. Every web development firm must use Google Analytics in order to be successful in today's society.

To me the use of Google Analytics is a no brainer. We've used it for several years, and although it may not be quite as robust as other analytics tools, it gets the job done within our budget. With Google Analytics available, there is really no reason to not use web analytics on your site.

Google Analytics provides a variety of tools that helps our team analyze data and create customer reports in an efficient manner. This tool is well worth the cost even if you do not have an AdWords account. The insight you gain from testing, campaigns, visitor traffic, etc. is extremely easy to get from this tool.
