What is Grafana Loki?

Grafana Logs (powered by Loki) brings together logs from applications and infrastructure in a single place. By using the exact same service discovery and label model as Prometheus, Grafana Logs can systematically guarantee logs have consistent metadata with metrics.

Grafana Logs lets users send logs in any format, from any source so it’s easy to add to existing infrastructure and get up and running quickly.
  • Leverage a wide array of clients for shipping logs like Promtail, Fluentbit, Fluentd, Vector, Logstash, and the Grafana Agent, as well as unofficial clients.
  • Promtail, Loki's preferred agent, can pull in logs from many sources, including local log files, the systemd journal, GCP, AWS Cloudwatch, AWS EC2 and EKS, Windows events logs, the Docker logging driver, Kubernetes, and Kafka.
  • There aren’t any ingestion log formatting requirements — all formats welcome including JSON, XML, CSV, logfmt, unstructured text.

Grafana Loki is open source, horizontally scalable, highly available, multi-tenant log aggregation system inspired by Prometheus. It is for users who prefer to set up, administer, and maintain their own installation.

Alternately, offered as a fully managed service, Grafana Cloud Logs is a log aggregation system based on Grafana Loki. It is Managed and administered by Grafana Labs with free and paid options for individuals, teams, and large enterprises. And the Enterprise Logs option is a self-managed logging solution that runs securely at scale with expert support from Grafana Labs.

As Grafana Loki is open-source logging and monitoring solution. We are using Kubernetes Cluster for our application deployment we are using Loki for Log aggregation of pods logs, jobs logs, and nodes logs, so we don't have to give access to Kubernetes cluster. Also, we are using Grafana for monitoring our Infrastructure, Cluster, Nodes Monitoring, Pods Monitoring, and our public cloud service provider.
  • Access to many open-source dashboards, access to add many data-sources to gather and visualize data from.
  • Grafana Loki does well gathering of logs from various data-sources, we can also filter the logs based on our needs.
  • One stop solution for all the logs and monitoring.
  • We can modify the logs directly from UI of Grafana Loki
  • Better and simplified options for logs filtering
  • Easy usability with SMTP configuration and other system level configuration
In our application there are many points from where logs are coming so in order to go to each and every application and check logs its very overhead so we are using Grafana Loki for the logs gathering and monitoring.
  • Logs gathering and monitoring from various data-sources
  • Access control
  • One stop solution for monitoring and logging
  • Only indexes the metadata
  • Have to manage it by ourselves compare to other available managed monitoring and log observability solutions
  • Dedicated person or team of SRE to manage the monitoring and observability solutions
First and foremost if Grafana Loki is based on CNCF open source projects so organizations can get freedom to choice to configure it at your own other main thing is Grafana Loki is totally free of cost and we can deploy it on our infrastructure. On compared with other managed services like Datadog, New Relic it is very expensive and we also don't have much control on the tools we use.

In our team we are delivering a solution so for that we have to setup and configure the whole Grafana Loki stack and each and every deployment represents the different level of configuration, logs filtering, dashboards, data-sources to be used and added.

  • Developer dont need to go to many consoles or servers to check logs they can just log in to Grafana and all things are there for developer to debug the issue.
  • Logs gathering and filtering at scale from various datasources at the same time
  • From monitoring insights able to modify and change the infrastructure and application in better way

- We have taken all the above checked response into consideration because Grafana Loki is Open-source so we don't have to pay for it.
- Once configured we can save our file of configuration so we can use it later on also for another deployments.
- Most of Companies or organizations are moving towards this solution as they are also supportive and community is also good.
I don't need to change my evaluation as we have reached to an level of our requirement and it is way optimized.
