I think gusto is better than Rippling. Rippling can be very difficult to use and there needs to be a lot of controls in place to make it work. Gusto is much easier for the employee to use and since it is a more established company there is not all the uncertainty of working with a startup in this economic climate.

Gusto Review 10/10

Personally, I believe that Gusto is the superior product, especially if used by a smaller firm. It has all of the same capabilities as QBO, but has a much simpler design that makes it more user friendly. As I've stated early, the technical support for Gusto is certainly more pleasant to deal with.

Gusto has a glitch-free on-boarding process that surpasses all of the other systems that I have ever tried and used. Rippling is the only other platform that comes close to the Gusto online experience, but Rippling has its PEO/behind-the-scenes legacy system glitches, and it's not nearly as user friendly as Gusto. Gusto's reports are THE best compared with all the other platforms that I have tried.

Gusto was the only payroll provider we used for our business. Before Gusto we were running payroll manually, which was cumbersome and didn’t account for our tax liability. Gusto is heads and shoulders above running payroll manually. It takes the load of payroll management off your shoulders and gives employees and easy to use portal to manage their personal payroll information.

Homebase is extremely crude and the only thing I find useful is their scheduling tool. I wish Gusto would take a note about this one facet of their business from them. Paycom is extremely comprehensive and offers lots of tools that I have no use for. As a result, their software is much more complicated by comparison. Both from an employee and employer standpoint.

In terms of GUI, Gusto is well-made. It's much prettier than APS and Bamboo. Bamboo and APS both have a lot more capability and, thus, are a little more complicated to use. Bamboo does not have a built-in payroll, though they do have a partner. We ultimately ended up going with APS instead of Gusto.

I thought that Gusto's solution was more modern and flexible. All of that would be fantastic if they gave any care to onboarding correctly, customer service, and honest sales tactics... but in my opinion, they do not so I feel it's worthless.

Payroll is on par, however, the benefits management is not even close. BambooHR and TriNet both offered better benefit plans and over the course of years, never caused my teams to be uninsured for any period of time. BambooHR and TriNet support teams have always communicated and followed up on any issues raised.

I have only used Gusto for my payroll needs for both of my businesses from the very beginning but I have heard from colleagues that Quickbooks payroll is much more time intensive and takes longer to input than the amount of time I spend in Gusto running payroll and onboarding staff with new hire paperwork and direct deposit.

  • RUN Powered by ADP®
This system allowed us to approve payroll online, which was an improvement from the prior ADP system where we had to call in via phone to dictate hours and pay for employees. But, RUN was clunky, and seemed cobbled together. It was also expensive for what it provided. Also, I ended up with stacks of paystubs and reports that were mailed to me each pay cycle. None of my employees wanted a paper copy, so this, along with the plastic security envelopes, just stacked up and became a hassle to deal with. When I transitioned to Gusto, employees got their own login to view their paystubs if they wanted, and I cut down on all the paper and plastic waste (I had to eventually shred it all). And Gusto has much better ease of use at less than half the price I was paying for the RUN by ADP system.

Best Solution So Far

We left Zenefits for Gusto after Zenefits bungled tax payments to multiple states and had terrible customer service when we were working to get this corrected. So far we have not had similar issues with Gusto. Also, the customer service reps from Gusto are based in the US so I can understand what they are saying on the phone.

Gusto has been my favorite option both as an end-user (ie. employee) and admin (ie. employer). It's easy to use, has all the features we need, integrates with Guideline (our preferred 401k provider), and priced well for great value.
