The acquisition of BugFix adeptly caters to pressing business needs related to security compliance, patch management, efficient software updates, and streamlined infrastructure management. Additionally, it addresses the vulnerability of organizational data and integrity to online threats and malware attacks. HCL BigFix further enhances protection by offering exceptional services, including a robust backend setup for compliance and device monitoring. Its ability to create, monitor, and update IT policies remotely for each device and work email is a valuable feature. Furthermore, the smart re-routing of data traffic and effective isolation of affected devices and servers make HCL BigFix a superior solution compared to others in the market.

BigFix is being used across the organization for software deployment and patching purposes as well as asset management information for our end user devices and enterprise infrastructure assets. It centralizes our patching deployment processes as well as our software inventory collection. In addition, we ensure that our asset information is all consolidated into BigFix which we then draw a report out of and use to enhance our CMDB.
  • Software inventory.
  • Patch deployment.
  • Patch review.
  • Customization.
  • Simplified reporting (management level).
  • Guides for administrators to use in their everyday work.
BigFix is well suited for patch review and deployment, but there are key features that can definitely be improved. An example is that if a specific patch is deployed, but a cumulative update that contains that patch is not deployed, the system still shows the patch as outstanding or not implemented.

Another area for improvement is the customization of BigFix. The tool has many uses and can be extremely helpful, but the amount of knowledge required to customize the solution is significant and customized scripts or "fixlets" need to be created. If common things could be pre-packaged and provided to the customer community, it would allow for an easier deployment and use of the tool.
  • Reduced workload for patch administration and deployment.
  • Reduced workload for software deployment.
  • Reduced workload for software inventory.
The functionality seemed greater and the pricing was more advantageous for the firm at the time of purchase. The decision was made due to our business relationship with IBM, the demonstrations provided by several former users of BigFix and the expansive feature set that can be utilized. One thing to note is that each separate set of functionality requires separate licenses, so the cost of implementation can be steep.
While some support calls are quickly responded to, many times our engineers have been pointed to collaborative web sites such as Bigfix.me for solutions or the option of engaging professional services has been proposed. While this may seem like a good way to drive business, it is not seen as efficient a support process as could be provided to the customer base.

It is being used by a medical school within the University. The product helps the school manage endpoints and servers including inventory, patching, software distribution, reporting, and certain configuration managements.
  • It is easy to add systems into BigFix and keep good inventories.
  • The inventory properties can be customized to facilitate various reporting demands.
  • The patching function is difficult for RedHat Linux servers, and can be improved.
  • The site configuration and access control appears to be cumbersome.
The product does a good job with hardware and software inventory, and some basic or simple software distribution. It is designed to patch computers, including Windows and Linux, but this function can be improved for robustness and more compatible with the OS vendor's method.
  • Overall, the product helps achieve the security posture mandated by HIPAA for our organization.
  • It is a decent inventory management solution, and provides IT leaders with useful information for decision making.
We used Spiceworks in small scales. BigFix is more enterprise-ready and able to support a large environment like ours. It also offers functions that are not available in Spiceworks.
I personally have not used HCL tech support. From my coworkers' experience, we wish for better support in terms of timeliness and knowledge.

We use BigFix for patching our workstations, and also for asset management. We have 3000 endpoints that are being patched with BigFix.
  • Custom patch packages are easy to set up and allows for use with a repository.
  • Asset management by use of agents is simple and allows for user assignment by the device.
  • Reporting has a large variety of templates.
  • Reports that it does have could be fine-tuned and provide more percentages and charts for executives.
  • The ability to use agentless deployments would be nice.
BigFix does one thing really well and that is patch deployment. The use of agents allows for real-time reporting so you know the status of each device prior to deploying any new patches.
  • We've been using BigFix for some time and it has helped us with vulnerability remediation.
  • It has reduced our risk level tremendously compared to just using WSUS.
Although it lacks the ability to deploy agentless scanning or patch deployments it makes up in its real-time data of devices do to the use of agents. Compared to our other patch management software Ivanti we believe that it fills the role of workstation management better than Avanti.
Recently we noticed the customer service on the support has dropped compared to when we first deployed the software.
