IBM Connections offers a complete package of tools that can be useful but it doesn't integrate well with other services. Competitors like Yammer offer slightly fewer features but are cheaper and much easier to maintain. If we were making a decision today we probably would choose a combination of Yammer, Slack, Microsoft Teams, and other Microsoft or Google Tools.

Confluence is a much truer Wiki system, with easier to understand permissions, better management of content, a better plugin ecosystem, far greater enterprise adoption, and above all else, functional search! If users generate wiki pages inside of Confluence, we actually can find the data gain! This is a huge win, as it doesn't requires to pass around URLs, but rather suggest search terms that others can use to find pages. Moreover, it integrates well with the other tools in the Atlassian suite, and we have fully switches over to using the other Atlassian tools because of it.

IBM Connections is similar to the tools provided in collegiate settings (like Blackboard), but with more emphasis on the social media model and less focused (sometimes too many options/features is a bad thing). I find the file sharing and collaboration pieces to be the most useful, because my role happens to emphasize those tasks. These features are effective, but do have a bit of a learning curve (particularly with the MS Office plugin). However, as I mentioned in a previous response, Connections is nowhere near as dependable or convenient as MS SharePoint and/or Google Docs. File syncing is very touchy, collaboration tools are clunky and the open sourced office software integrated with the web browser can render documents awkward or impossible to read.

We did not select IBM Connections via searching. We had a previous IBM product that was discontinued and so when we were given IBM Connections, we did evaluate it but not against other systems. However other one off products had been evaluated/used in the past but as I just said, it was a system/site that only provided a couple things you could do with it versus having it all integrated.

We have not yet evaluated any particular products in depth; we had fully expected to move forward with Connections on-premises.

However, we have briefly looked at SmartCloud / Connections Cloud which is, of course, very similar but maintained and updated by IBM. We have also briefly looked into Office 365 which has several advantages, being (A) Microsoft Office, (B) broadly available training (live, video, etc.) and (C) enthusiastic support from most of IT and many end users. However, Office 365 is much more expensive.

From the few times that I have used MS SharePoint, I can say that it doesn't seem to hold a candle to the robust features of IBM Connections. The out-of-the-box capabilities of IBM Connections are amazing and are more easy to access and use than what I've seen with MS SharePoint.

Because of the open design of the product but also because of the main support for http://activitystrea.ms/ which was a huge jump in end user news retrieval of the environment. The overall cost of the product was so much lower than comparing products as out of the box IBM Connections already delivered lots where other products we reviewed needed add-on tools with their license fees as well.

I have not personally evaluated other products, as I just manage day-to-day operations. I am not a developer, so I am unsure as to how IBM Connections compares to other products in the marketplace.

I have evaluated IBM Connections against MS Sharepoint and IBM Lotus Notes. I would say IBM Connections is beneficial in comparrison to Lotus Notes applications because IBM Connections by default works with browsers vs LN Client and it is easy to use. However with developing really complex applications I would use Lotus Notes.
IBM Connections and IBM Quickr are very convenient tools compared with Sharepoint especially considering the easy setup, security and workflow functionality IBM Connections provides.

At the time we were evaluating collaboration tools we weren't sure if our users were ready for it or not. As such we wanted to purchase a product where the users could get the feel for collaboration without making a huge software and infrastructure commitment in case they would not buy into it. Connections filled the need perfectly. Since we were an IBM shop already it made even more sense. The best thing is that Connections has continued to meet our collaboration needs even though it has caught on greatly with our user community and demand increases every day. We will continue to use Connections despite other larger more expensive options are out there.

IBM Connections is much more advantageous than a simple cloud storage, such as Dropbox. Dropbox is simple and easy to use, however it does not offer all the features IBM Connections has. The additional abilities of IBM Connections make it a great tool for companies and departments. For this reason, we use IBM Connections.
