Companies can't remove reviews or game the system. Here's why

We use hipchat as an internal chat system. It's used primarily by the Cloud Services department, but people that use our internal products also have access to support rooms where they can ask questions.
  • Hipchat has good support for message searching to allow you to go back through history and find important comments or copy/pasted things.
  • Room creation, deletion, administration, and the general usability of Hipchat are all very solid.
  • The added emoji features are a ton of fun.
  • The online webapp is not as good as it probably should be.
  • Hipchat is surprisingly expensive for a large team.
  • Hipchat integration with other services is lacking compared to Slack.
Smaller teams will get a reasonable price from Hipchat, but large teams will have to face a rather steep bill.

Hipchat was selected by my superiors and works fine, though we are limited to the free version with only 10k message history. I prefer Slack or Telegram, though Telegram would require quite a bit of customization, Slack is a superior, cheaper option to Hipchat.
Yes
We replaced Lync with it. We still use Lync for interacting with some other departments, but internally we only use Hipchat because it is way better than Lync and has support for things engineers do.

Plain and simple, the free version of hipchat was selected because it was free.
I would probably try to experiment a little more before making a decision, rather than simply reading reviews.

Yes
Very well. No complaints about any features, though I would not consider the mobile version the ideal version simply because it's the mobile version.
All of the core features are easy to grasp and use for even a basic computer user.
The integrations are reasonably solid, but there is nothing overwhelming about their ease of use or about their difficulty to use. The appearance of an integration in the actual chat is also fairly standard with nothing particularly outstanding or disappointing.

We use hipchat in our IT department to assist us with communication in developing our software. We use different rooms for each of our teams. The history is extremely helpful to go back to later for information. We also integrate with a calendar to show when team members will be out. We've also used the bots for polls and our daily stand up reports. It's helpful.
  • I like the stand up bot - it's helpful to de-clutter the body of our group chat.
  • I have no recommendations, I really like hipchat.

I'm not sure, my supervisor controls Hipchat and delegates to others for assistance with Hipchat support.
  • Communication
  • Stand-up reports
  • Deployment Assistance (with communication)
  • Calendar integration to notify when team members will be out of the office
  • Calendar Integration
  • The bots helped with a poll a few times to help us decide where to eat lunch as a team
  • Faster/easier communication with a save history
Not Sure
I'm not sure, this was done before I moved to the department I'm in now.
  • Don't know
I don't have insights as I was not a part of the implementation. However, I love the end product.
The blog of issues/conversations with HipChat support team is very helpful.

We've been using Slack for a year or so because of its integration possibility with other systems. So at that time it won over HipChat. While the team was growing we started to use more and more Atlassian products (like Jira, Confluence, Bamboo) and noticed that the integrations could be done even better with HipChat. Just recently we had to add something like 30 people in a subsidiary to the team so we took the time to evaluate again. Meanwhile HipChat evolved and is almost at the level of Slack, but with a lower price. Even though they improved the functionality of the system, the apps for mobile devices are still far away from Slack. At the end the price range and the Jira integration were the main reason to switch and even though there are some complaints from my colleagues, we're a lot faster in communicating with them.
  • Jira integration to show ticket changes in rooms
  • Possibility to open rooms from tickets
  • User mentioning
  • Clumsy chat view. Especially when there are a lot of movements in tickets. Those should be in a side list.
  • Hangout integration sometimes doesn't work.
  • Difficult to find unread messages in apps. Should be better structured. It's even worse for the Mac App where you close chats with CMD+w and you get no notice until you're directly mentioned in the room.
  • Ediint of messages is too complex.
HipChat is well suited for fast discussion on a ticket directly starting from there...even though there is room for improvement, e.g. sync chat history to ticket.

We had to add 30 new collaborators to our chat ( which was Slack at that time) that had been using Mail and phone before to communicate. The task was not just to introduce a new communication tool, but to widely replace the old communication channels and introduce new, more efficient workflows.
We intoduced it just some months ago and are still doing well after some initial acceptance problems, so I would not change it at all.

Most of our IT departments use HipChat. We also have a few admin departments using the rooms feature. We are able to communicate on the fly in real time, see who is available at the time and eliminate mass emails. We also use the one on one chat.
  • Using the rooms for a dept is the best feature- you can lock rooms off as private or have open rooms for anyone to join.
  • The emojis are pretty cool.
  • They should add the feature to be able to chat to 2 people in one conversation.
  • The last update has been very buggy- Kept crashing. Hipchat was fine until this update..
  • Search feature used to work great but now it has not been working properly.
HipChat is great for IT departments, and real time updates especially when we have our SOS moments.

Basic software knowledge
  • We host a private room for our help desk to discuss ongoing issues.
  • One on one chats with other techs and IT depts.
  • Use on mobile devices when we do not have access to our PCs.
  • Using the mobile device when our internet or PCs are inaccessible.
  • Adding more people to rooms for other departments, will cut down on single email discussions on topics.
If they fix the bugs the last update gave that are causing hipchat to crash more often.

awesome! Probably the best feature.
Could add some items like dual chats with 2 or more besides using a full room.
