Hip or not? Hipchat messaging
Hipchat is being used by the engineering, product, and data teams, only these departments and not across the whole organization. Hipchat quickly allows coworkers to communicate, send documents, and screenshots. While emails tend to clutter the inbox and contain longer essays, hipchat allows for quick informal check-ins and conversations through instant messaging. In a quiet office, it helps team-building where co-workers can have little conversations on the side.
- Hipchat allows me to "call" on different people in the department by the @ sign.
- Hipchat allows me to create different rooms for projects so I don't have to remember who's doing what, rather label the item based on the project.
- Hipchat provides a myriad of communication methods where I can add emojis to messages. It strikes the balance of informal in a business setting.
- Hipchat loads and presents attachments well.
- Hipchat could organize its messaging UI better, the side panel isn't my favorite.
- Hipchat could provide more granularity to its notification - it currently has three settings. One suggestion would be to provide different chimes for different rooms or people.
- Hipchat sends a notification when I'm not logged in and I receive a 1-on-1 message, these messages could be batched instead of individual emails.
- Hipchat sometimes doesn't authenticate my login correctly. Losing communication between the team makes teamwork hard.

Hipchat works about as well as the other products (Skype and Google Chat). The other products have the advantage of video chat embedded into the system. I couldn't see HipChat as a stand alone product, we mainly use it because it matches with other software like JIRA, though Hipchat does have more emojis and a conversational tone.
- The chat system for HipChat is really easy to use. I could quickly attach files, send messages and view messages.
- HipChat made it easy to create new chat rooms.
- Hi
- Hard to flow through all the different people and conversations having at the same time.
- Adding a person to the current chat discussion is hard.
Yes, but I don't use it

Good system, more expensive than competitors
We use hipchat as an internal chat system. It's used primarily by the Cloud Services department, but people that use our internal products also have access to support rooms where they can ask questions.
- Hipchat has good support for message searching to allow you to go back through history and find important comments or copy/pasted things.
- Room creation, deletion, administration, and the general usability of Hipchat are all very solid.
- The added emoji features are a ton of fun.
- The online webapp is not as good as it probably should be.
- Hipchat is surprisingly expensive for a large team.
- Hipchat integration with other services is lacking compared to Slack.

We replaced Lync with it. We still use Lync for interacting with some other departments, but internally we only use Hipchat because it is way better than Lync and has support for things engineers do.

Plain and simple, the free version of hipchat was selected because it was free.
I would probably try to experiment a little more before making a decision, rather than simply reading reviews.
- Room/Group creation
- Personal Messages
- Tagging people
- Text replace in a previous message
- Controlling room admins
- Fine tuning the room notifications
Yes
Very well. No complaints about any features, though I would not consider the mobile version the ideal version simply because it's the mobile version.
HipChat is being used by various teams. In our team we are leveraging JIRA and Jenkins integrations and considering using it as a link in a semi-automated workflow. HipChat would notify the team that data is ready and team members would approve publishing data by sending a message in HipChat.
- I like that the history of your conversation with each contact is always present and easily searched without having to open up chat logs.
- I like that you can easily correct typos in-place by just typing the substitution s/msspell/misspell.
- Its easy to send files or code snippets, for example just /code then paste the snippet.
- I like that the person you are messaging does not have to be on line, they will see the message when they return and can get off-line messages as email.
- I wish that HipChat could notify me when someone comes online. Even though I can send a message when they are off-line, I can't converse with them when they are off-line.
- It would be nice to be able to sort my contact list automatically. Alphabetically is the most obvious sort, but fancier sorts like frequent contacts (sub-sorted alphabetically) might be nice too. I don't know that it makes sense to do a strict frequency but there could be buckets like daily, weekly, occasionally, rarely/never.
- I tried right clicking on the avatar for a contact that hadn't set one, but got some options that looked like they might be related to that until I actually tried one and it just wanted to upload an attachment.

Hip to HipChat!
Most of our IT departments use HipChat. We also have a few admin departments using the rooms feature. We are able to communicate on the fly in real time, see who is available at the time and eliminate mass emails. We also use the one on one chat.
- Using the rooms for a dept is the best feature- you can lock rooms off as private or have open rooms for anyone to join.
- The emojis are pretty cool.
- They should add the feature to be able to chat to 2 people in one conversation.
- The last update has been very buggy- Kept crashing. Hipchat was fine until this update..
- Search feature used to work great but now it has not been working properly.

Basic software knowledge
- We host a private room for our help desk to discuss ongoing issues.
- One on one chats with other techs and IT depts.
- Use on mobile devices when we do not have access to our PCs.
- Using the mobile device when our internet or PCs are inaccessible.
- Adding more people to rooms for other departments, will cut down on single email discussions on topics.
