HPE Synergy is Hewlett Packard Enterprise's software designed to support a composable infrastructure, which treats IT resources as a service that can be "composed" and deployed out to applications in near real-time, eliminating the need to configure hardware.

HPE Synergy

A composable infrastructure is a pool of hardware resources managed, or "composed," in a software-defined manner to meet the needs of applications with the goal of eliminating the need for the configuration of hardware. This works by treating hardware resources (compute, networks, storage) as services that can be composed on the fly via software to create a virtual server optimized for the application which needs the resources. The goal is to increase server utilization and efficiency, and reduce the time needed to deploy applications.

In our Organization we use Synergy 12000 for HPC virtualization. It can handle multiple high performance work loads and the hardware is stable as well as easy to operate. Compared to the older HPE c7000 enclosure it is a more compact system and the processor is quite cheaper to replace. As Synergy is the latest blade system in HPE's lineup the virtualization is easier and the latest VMware and other virtualization like HPE VME are supported. HPE One view support has been a real game changer for node management including automated firmware update for each component, automated case generation for issue and many more.

Handles high performance workloads efficiently
Has automated failover for downtime reduction
Easier to replace spare parts
Cable management is easier compared to previous generation

Oneview configuration can be complex
No advanced analytical features available
Monitoring features need to be improved

Downtime has been minimal resulting in less service imapct
Freed up a lot of valuable rack space
Forecasted ROI target is much shorter

HPE Synergy solves our business problems for scaling and sizing various virtualized environments across the board via its composable infrastructure features. The logical encapsulation of all resources provides a set of rich functionality for policy based management, allocation/reallocation and utilization of resources.

Nearly instant configuration of applications according to specific requirements within a single pool
Deployment, updating and monitoring via a single interface
Updates and redeployment with minimal service interruption
Support for virtual, bare metal and containerized workloads

Firmware repository size limitations could be larger (was increased recently but still is only room for a few SPPs)
Profile template updates flag all machines that haven't had their profile updated from the template, causing the dashboard to go red with warnings and can cause unnecessary concern
OneView, while powerful isn't as user friendly as it could be

Eased concerns for go-live of a huge new deployment as we knew we could respond to any scaling concern swiftly and thoroughly
Hardware has been rock solid since implementation
Limits to initially deployed logical enclosure configurations have been addressed rapidly by the introduction of new hardware with fast speeds/additional management ring connectivity options
