What is IBM Cloud Continuous Delivery?

With IBM Cloud Continuous Delivery, users can use open toolchains to build, deploy, and manage applications. Toolchains are integrated sets of tools that make development and operations tasks repeatable and manageable. Toolchains can include IBM Cloud services, open source tools, and third-party tools. Deploy to a range of environments including IBM Cloud Kubernetes Service, OpenShift, and other public and private clouds.

IBM Cloud Continuous Delivery is managed by IBM in the Dallas, Frankfurt, London, Tokyo, Osaka, Sydney and Washington DC regions. It is integrated with IBM Cloud Identity and Access Management (IAM), Resource Groups, and IBM Cloud billing.

IBM Cloud Continuous Delivery Features

  • Supported: Delivery Pipeline: Build, test and deploy in a repeatable way with minimal human intervention, and able to release into production at any time with Delivery Pipeline built on the open source Tekton project.
  • Supported: Git Repos and Issue Tracking: Manages source code and tracks work with Git repositories and issue tracking hosted by IBM and built on GitLab Community Edition.
  • Supported: DevOps Insights: Offers a holistic understanding of an application in a single dashboard. Displays trend information about builds, deployments and test results. Ensures quality through automated enforcement of policies and gates based on quality metrics.
  • Supported: Code can be edited from anywhere: An integrated web-based environment built on Eclipse Orion, used to create, edit, run, debug, and complete source control tasks, and seamlessly move from editing code to deploying it to production.
  • Supported: CLIs and tooling to interact with applications, containers, infrastructure, and other services
  • Supported: IBM Cloud Shell gives control of cloud resources, applications and infrastructure, from any web browser.

Best fit for IBM Cloud and IBM Hybrid cloud strategy. Very well suited for RedHat Openshift and cloud-native build packs. Complementary solution for Enterprise Java workloads transformation and modernization journey such as java microservices development lifecycle and also DevSecOps needs of the enterprises from easy way. Helpful for full-stack developers as well.

We chose IBM Cloud Developer Tools for multiple reasons. Cost, current infrastructure vendor list, and Cloud Operations team experience were key driving factors for us. Palo Alto's Prisma Cloud product was slick for sure but we found it more difficult to deploy and integrate with our current environment and applications.

IBM Cloud developer tools had good support for mobile and web based applications and seemed relatively easy to integrate to our applications. We have other IBM tools so it had a slight edge over others when we compared.

This is recommended over other applications as it has a continuous delivery for non-mission critical applications also which has simple proof of concepts and this is reliable. Also, the integration to different platforms along with cloud implementation is an add-on. The ease of usage and the UI along with the templates it provides makes it helpful and makes it stand different[ly].

IBM Cloud Developer Tools is way easier than Jenkins and most of the features Jenkins has are not useful for us and the features we wanted were absent ButIBM Cloud Developer Tools saved our lives and is perfect in all aspects as we can easily develop and deploy. The only thing appealing about Jenkins was its price, and in the case of IBM it is profoundly unsuitable for us, but I am looking forward to it to get reduced.

Both competitors listed work in a similar manner; you can automate the deployment of servers using configuration files and the command line. The difference is that Ansible and Terraform are provider-agnostic, meaning you can use them for other hosting providers as well (AWS, Google, etc.). While both options are viable when using IBM Cloud Foundry, none of them work as well as the IBM Cloud developer tools. If you need to deploy to multiple providers, it may pay off to test these alternatives, but if not, just stick to the official IBM dev tools.

Mainly, AWS offers 5G services which are futuristic. AWS has More products than IBM Cloud & it offers High Parallel Performance & Computing. Better global coverage than IBM Cloud & Rigid SLAs with credit compensation

Coming to Microsoft Azure, its user interface is very easy to understand. One can get it easily after a glance. Customer service & feedback is good. Azure is an ideal, cost-effective solution for periodic data migration, business continuity replication, and disaster recovery

Eclipse with IBM Cloud Foundry and Kubernets we used to develop application in on premises and deployed into the cloud. And we created containers, created many projects and deployed into the cloud by using Continuous Delivery in IBM Cloud. Great service and great support. IBM Cloud Continuous Delivery is having good documentation that helps a lot to understand better about the services.

There's not really a technical background on the decision of using IBM Cloud Continuous delivery. Our CTO assisted to a conference where IBM was promoting their services and offering a free tier. As in that instance the company was starting, every free tier offering was well received, but there was no further research.
At the current time we are evaluating a platform change and waiting for GCP to install their server farm on our region.

CI/CD is much more user friendly than Jenkins.
It better integrates to IBM Cloud features.
On the other side, Jenkins deployed in a VM or better, on a K8S cluster is a less expensive solution.
Jenkins has also much more features (but we do not use them).

I find IBM Cloud Continuous Delivery service way easier to set up compared to Travis CI. The visual interface helps you navigate throughout the service effortlessly. I used Travis CI 2 years ago, although it wasn't complicated, I took more time to create and set up an instance with a project. However, I did get the feeling that for advanced settings, I was more in control than when I compare it to IBM's alternative. Nonetheless, from a day to day perspective, I rather choose IBM's over Travis CI.
