What is IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions?

IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions is designed to make cloud adoption easier, allowing the user to optimize the value of existing on-premises infrastructure, while leveraging the same tools, technologies and skills in the cloud. Gain rapid scalability, deployment in 35+ global data centers and access to disaster recovery, backup, security and compliance solutions from an array of ecosystem partners.

To address varying workload needs, IBM Cloud offers both client-managed and IBM-managed VMware solutions. The client-managed solution, IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions Dedicated, includes VMware vSphere and VMware vCenter options in a monthly subscription model on a single-tenant infrastructure. Both run on bare metal servers enabling secure, single-tenant deployments. Additionally, the same root level hypervisor access can be retained as with an on-premises cloud. These models improve compatibility and increase cloud agility.

The IBM-managed solution, IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions Shared, leverages VMware vCloud Director in an hourly or monthly consumption model on a multi-tenant infrastructure. This self-service solution provides a way to start migrating virtual machines (VMs) to the cloud in a matter of minutes. IBM Cloud manages the hypervisor, so users don’t have to worry about managing, patching or updates. The vendor describes this model as flexible and cost-effective for scalability.

What the use of various IBM cloud products has generated in our company is the ease that all the administration interfaces are similar and follow the same logic of use, the products have also been good in the implementation part and their integration. Between them it is quick and simple, so everything together has been very good for us.

There are still some jobs that are being run on our Veeam that is being integrated into IBM's very seamlessly. We are currently in the process of fully implementing IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions and removing Veeam and the capabilities offered by IBM gives us the confidence to do so. This reduces cost and complexity when it comes to backups and virtualization.

  • IBM Cloud Virtual Servers
Yes, using IBM products is really good if you are an existing user for IBM PVU licensing. This provides good integration and understanding of the setup. IBM is a little complex at first but once you start using it, it would be the easiest thing to learn and explain to teams. Go ahead and stay with it to have a perfect environment and stability.

Overall the impacts on our organization has been positive using multiple IBM portfolios. Our costs have decreased, efficiency has increased. We can't really ask for more than that. We'd like to see the support model become a bit less cumbersome, but overall, the impact has been very positive for us.

Low cost but no support

  • Veeam on IBM Cloud
The integration and self service portal look nice but they don't really work, and when they do the support was not able to correct the issues without getting Veeam involved. In the end, we were able to get it working but cannot do file-level restores or anything other then entire machine backups, and installing the agent would cost a lot more and require an additional server.
