What is IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions?

IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions is designed to make cloud adoption easier, allowing the user to optimize the value of existing on-premises infrastructure, while leveraging the same tools, technologies and skills in the cloud. The solution provides rapid scalability, deployment in 35+ global data centers and access to disaster recovery, backup, security and compliance solutions from an array of ecosystem partners.

To address varying workload needs, IBM Cloud offers both client-managed and IBM-managed VMware solutions. The client-managed solution, IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions Dedicated, includes VMware vSphere and VMware vCenter options in a monthly subscription model on a single-tenant infrastructure. Both run on bare metal servers enabling secure, single-tenant deployments. Additionally, the same root level hypervisor access can be retained as with an on-premises cloud. These models improve compatibility and increase cloud agility.

The IBM-managed solution, IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions Shared, leverages VMware vCloud Director in an hourly or monthly consumption model on a multi-tenant infrastructure. This self-service solution provides a way to start migrating virtual machines (VMs) to the cloud in a matter of minutes. IBM Cloud manages the hypervisor, so users don’t have to worry about managing, patching or updates. The vendor describes this model as flexible and cost-effective for scalability.

IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions is being used throughout our entire organization. It allows us to use the IBM Cloud to host our VMware servers, thus allowing us to minimize the number of VMware servers we have in our on-site data centers. It also allows us to expand our capacity when needed so that we can serve both our internal and external customers more efficiently and in a cost-effective manner.
  • Expandability: Allows us to add more capacity very easily.
  • We like that IBM is a one-stop shop that offers a complete setup without having to deal with multiple vendors.
  • The startup implementation was a pretty difficult process.
  • The documentation we felt was rather lacking and could be improved.
I think IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions would be a good fit for a medium to large company looking to outsource their current in-house VMware products. The IBM solution would allow them to outsource their current infrastructure so that the company could then concentrate on their core business, whatever that may be.

A smaller company with a smaller VMware footprint would probably not be a good fit here. It's a pretty complex process to get things started, so it might not be worth it for a smaller company.

  • One of our business objectives was to ensure as close to 100% uptime of our servers and applications. This solution has helped us achieve that goal.
  • Another goal was to try and minimize our datacenter footprint. This was achieved by using the product.
The overall impact in moving our current VMware stack to the IBM Cloud has been a positive one. Our current data centers are almost at capacity, so moving to the IBM Cloud has allowed us to minimize the need for new data centers. We also feel our data is safe and secure within the IBM Cloud, and we really like the automated backup and disaster recovery features.
We have felt that the IBM experts have been very helpful with our migration. The consultants we have worked with have been nothing but excellent, and we have felt that they have given us good advice in our migration effort. We would definitely recommend the IBM consultants to anyone looking to migrate their current in-house VMware products.
We believe IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions really stood out from Nutanix and Oracle VM VirtualBox. We really liked that the solution was a one-stop shop where IBM could provide all the required elements. We also trust IBM to provide the best-in-class solution to our problems and appreciate the dedicated consulting staff that were assigned to us to implement the solution.
Our implementation of IBM Cloud for VMware went very smoothly. We worked with our designated IBM technical support person and things went as expected. There were a few bumps along the road, but that was to be expected. My group is a pilot project for a larger team, so we just migrated items in relation to our group only. Implantation time was right on schedule and things have been running great since then!
Yes
IBM professional services helped us plan and implement the project with great success. They guided the project from planning, scoping, pre-implementation, testing, roll-out, then production and post-production support. We were very impressed with their knowledge of VMware and really appreciated their desire to make our project a success. I would highly recommend them!

I work for a national bank in the US and our organization has to be available 24x7. We need the highest level of support available to ensure our services are there for our customers. Downtime is not an option! We have an enterprise-wide premium contract that we feel is best to ensure a quick turn around time on problems and issues.
I'd be glad to provide a good example! We were having a problem with initially porting our application over to the IBM Cloud. We followed the provided, detailed instructions, but we could never just get it to work. We spend a few days troubleshooting this problem, but could never get it to work correctly.

We contacted IBM professional services and were promptly put in touch with someone with experience with this process. Within a few hours, we were up and running. Needless to say, we were thrilled with the turnaround time and great support!
  • Central Documentation and Learning Hub
  • IBM Cloud Docs
  • Ability to check uptime status for IBM Cloud products
  • Access to IBM and Developer communities through Stack Overflow or GitHub
These resources have been a great help with resolving issues we had with the implementation and post-implementation support. They have been very informative and have greatly helped us with keeping our application running in the IBM Cloud. We especially like the Learning Hub which allowed our tech staff to come up to speed quickly on this transition.
Overall, just a great experience here. No one in my opinion gets a perfect 10/10 rating (no one is ever perfect), so 9/10 is probably as good as it gets! From initial planning to post implementation support, the IBM Cloud and professional services has been there for my group as much as we have needed them. Great job!

It is used by IT departments to manage their virtual servers and not throughout all of the organization. It allows IT departments to manage and reboot the devices that they are responsible for without having to contact the server team. It also allows the server team to have a centralized area to manage all devices.
  • You architect your own solution.
  • Start a new cluster as small as one ESXi server or scale an existing cluster.
  • The web interface component could use some work. Particularly, performance in multiple browsers.
It is well suited for centralization, virtualization, and as a management platform.

VMware vSphere on IBM cloud is used in my department. It currently helps us address [being able to] connect different cloud providers as a service. The business problem it address[es] is that the individuals can use IBM Cloud as well as AWS and use Zadara from it.
  • Ease of use - we don't want to spend extra hours trying to figure out a problem.
  • Easy Setup - onboarding was simple and quick.
  • Great documentation - Most of the answers to our questions are very easily accessible without additional help.
  • Time latency
  • Support could be better
  • Price is high
I believe IBM Cloud [for VMware Solutions] is well suited for individuals who know their product, but not so much for cloud strategy. IBM helps us accelerate and plan the cloud journey and allows us to scale. I wouldn't recommend the IBM Cloud if you know how to scale and distribute the servers worldwide.

  • VMware vSphere on IBM has helped us gain more customers.
I haven't used other products, but I am happy with VMware VSphere on IBM Cloud. Our team enjoys using it as well, and the support that we have gotten from IBM keeps us satisfied as customers.
The support is great, there is a lot of documentation and easy to navigate FAQs. [There are] Some gaps in the knowledge base. In addition, the support team is very useful and responds within a relative time-frame if we need hands-on assistance. Overall, we have felt supported throughout our use with the product.
It is easy to use and setting it up is simple. The only con is that the pricing is a little bit high as well as documentation is a little low; so we had to do some personal learning to be able to fully utilize the product, or hop on the phone with someone.

vSphere on IBM cloud is being utilized to host and manage a sub section of VMs utilized for specific internal applications. It is being used only by the IT department, and it allows us to focus more on the applications themselves rather than worrying about the physical infrastructure for these critical apps.
  • The performance is top notch. Our on-prem environment was always suffering from lag and general sluggishness. With IBM running everything, it's much smoother.
  • It's always up to date. Our previous environment was always lacking the latest updates and security features. Our audit department enjoys having the peace of mind that everything is up to date.
  • They handle the security of the environment. It allows our security team to focus on higher priority issues. They dont have to worry about making sure our systems are secured.
  • I wish it were a bit easier to manage user access.
  • The initial configuration process could be a bit more streamlined.
Scenarios where VMware vSphere on IBM Cloud is well suited for any companies that don't want to have to worry about the physical side of everything. If you are already looking to virtualization, then why not get rid of the physical infrastructure running the vSphere portion as well. A less appropriate scenario would be in the case of our SCADA systems. Due to the nature of these systems, we still prefer to keep the management and vSphere on prem.

  • It has a positive impact on the cost required to maintain our vSphere environment by allowing us to get rid of our vsphere hardware and not worry about maintenance either.
  • There have been very few negatives, but one would definitely be the open-ended cost associated with cloud products in general.
We selected VMware over Azure due to the fact that it was already familiar and still offered the same cloud capabilities that Azure would have gained us. This allowed us to keep using the same interface and not have to relearn everything from start to finish with a new product.
We have had very few instances where we needed to reach out for support, but each time we have the response has been quick. The techs have been knowledgeable and resolved issues in a timely manner.
Everything is very clearly laid out. Being familiar with vSphere already, it was a quick transition over to the IBM environment. This allowed us to spend less time on the implementation phase and move quickly to actually utilizing the system on a day to day basis. Also, the performance is very good. No lagginess to the website like our previous on-prem environment.

We currently use VMWare on IBM cloud for our VDI deployments. The Virtual Desktop Infrastructure centralizes our support to a single pane of glass. Basically, rather than using many control systems, we can use a single interface to deploy all of our features.
  • Easy deployment
  • Easy support
  • Simple pricing model
  • More marketing capabilities
VMWare vSphere on IBM cloud is best utilized for for global companies where your data lives in multiple locations.

  • Deployment for new employees has decreased from 3 weeks to 4 days
From what I've seen so far, IBM cloud has the same features as any other cloud provider.
Never had an issue with IBM cloud.
It's incredibly user-friendly. So much so that we deployed our environment in a single day. We use it to monitor any problems to the site (ex: an image is bad and needs to be updated) to make sure that everything our teams puts out is running optimally.
