IBM Cognos Analytics supports better enterprise connectivity than the competition. It supports on-premises and cloud deployments, regardless of cloud platform, and also provides its own SaaS cloud platform. Other tools are locked in to specific cloud platforms and are not as data agnostic as IBM Cognos Analytics and its wide range of deployment options.

Because the features and options of IBM Cognos Analytics are really incredibly superb and outstanding. According to my experience, this is a very effective BI tool that allows us to create customized reports. Even if a normal person can use the dashboard without some technical skills. This is really amazing enterprise tool for data reporting.

The product IBM Cognos Analytics contains so many features that it can respond to any demands. It has Reports, Dashboards, Packages, Data Modules, Data Sets, Jobs, Events, external data files, Direct DB connections,... When other are limited. For example, Qlik Sense allow to build very nice and fast report but is not easy to get in hands. For example, adding metadata referencing target data need to know a SQL and specifics language and is not easy to users not in the IT department, while Cognos is more easy to use. Also, Cognos has an easy reporting scheduler with possibility to send report to a folder or by email (+ bursting, events, ....)

PowerBI seems a good product to advance from excel, but it can only compare to the Dashboards module of Cognos Analytics. Also, PowerBI encouraged a siloed approach to analytics while all the information and models created in Cognos are centralized.

Although Tableau has certain advantages, mostly in its best in class visualization capabilities, Cognos is catching up. Most of the other advantages of Tableau Desktop have been addressed in more recent versions of Cognos, for instance the ability to ingest personal data sources, self-service modeling, and improved dashboarding/visualization features. Tableau still lacks a centralized metadata and governance model and requires a bit more effort to implement at the enterprise level. Also, Cognos is still best in breed for standardized reporting, which is always a crucial need for organizations. More requirements can be centrally addressed by Cognos, but it is unlikely any organization will have just one BI tool.

Cognos is a clear winner when it comes to Enterprise level security - row-level and object level as well as the robustness of data. Tableau is better in UI and annotation (commentary) on data points. However, integration with datamart, scheduling & triggering is better with Cognos. Cognos has adhoc modules as well as reporting module for pixel-perfect reporting so the entry point is based on tech savviness.
Also, data modules in Cognos allows integration with enterprise data on the fly. More secure data in Cognos. AI and Natural Language integration is cool in Cognos and integration with Jupyter notebooks allows data science developers to integrate better with reporting teams.

IBM Cognos Analytics is catching up to Tableau Desktop in the only area that Tableau Desktop had an advantage (visualizations). IBM Cognos Analytics can do a lot more than what Tableau Desktop does with its advanced pixel perfect tools, ease of use, and delivery options to users. The ability to schedule reports and provide them with parameters, security, administration, etc. makes IBM Cognos Analytics a more robust product overall.

TRANSFORMER plus Cognos-Cubes were superior to all of them: speed of development as well as usability!
Much higher speed of development as compared to SAS.
Much easer as well as versatile handling for end-users as compared to SAP-BW.
We had a difficult time to decide between BO and Cognos. Don't remember why we chose Cognos over BO.

Compared to others, IBM Cognos Analytics on Cloud offers much simpler product options, actually just one as against many-part components for other providers like PowerBI. Unlike other options available in the market, IBM Cognos Analytics has extensive ability to handle large data sources, comes with matured data comparison capabilities and ability to narrate data, analysis journey storyboards, and has both on-premises and cloud options.

I believe you can’t compare the two just based off of data sets. Domo does allow room for customization and Cognos has a huge data set. It would be great to be able to pair the two.

IBM has tried to push its product to be like Tableau and included dashboarding, but we still use Tableau due to better features.

I haven't found anything that compares to the amazing features we get to use with IBM Cognos Report Studio, which allows you to send emails (PDF, Excel, HTML attachments).

We originally went with Cognos as our reporting tool for our ERP system. Before that, we were on a homegrown system that did not allow for the customization that Cognos allows. While I have not worked with another reporting system first hand, I can say that when I visit with my peers who use other systems, their system does not have the robust capabilities that Cognos has.

Cost wise, the above products are less expensive and offer tons more upfront, but you will pay for it on the back end. They have vendor limitations and their support mechanism was inline for what we wanted.

We used to use Crystal Reports but transitioned our reports to Cognos when Crystal was no longer supported in conjunction with PeopleSoft. Crystal is a more flexible report-building tool for unique needs, but Cognos has better prompts and is a better server-style report repository for many users.

We've used an in-house excel spreadsheet - which gave me all the data I needed. However, it took a while to acquire the information and it was very tedious. This software is very easy to use. It's night and day compared to the other information gathering material we used in the past.

Unanet does not offer the robust reporting that Cognos offers but yet it is easier to use and easier to adapt. Cognos, when compared to Unanet, is a lot more technical and is not as user-friendly. Unanet also offers great adaptability to various different software but on the other hand, Cognos offers a powerful BI tool.

It was cost prohibitive to switch platforms we have a huge investment in our Cognos implementation. There was retooling costs for our resources training costs for our users as well as a million $ plus investment in licensing costs. We could have considered a move to the cloud however we don't have any of our major systems in the cloud and we are still apprehensive.

IBM is a titan in BI innovation but has arduous competitors as I mentioned before. IBM has prestige in BI and the directors and managers know that. On the other hand, complexity is not the strategy of Cognos, that's why if you need big cubes of data, Tableau, and Microsoft BI are better suited for the job. Even QlikView is more complex than IBM Cognos. On the other hand, your users can benefit from the advantages that set analysis studio and event studio for notifications.

In my opinion, MicroStrategy has a better product architecture. As a reporting and analysis platform, MicroStrategy allows developers to build reports and dashboards using an integrated development tool for all capabilities. It also has a more powerful and easy to use self-service functionality.
On the other hand, Cognos has a better integration with other IBM products such as SPSS which gives powerful data mining capabilities.
Depending on customer needs we recommend Cognos or other tools.

  • Excel
Cognos allows you to manipulate data in a way very similar to Excel but it is important to keep in mind that all the data filtering and calculations take place on the back end before you receive the report output and if you want to manipulate the data, you have to do so before you run your report.
