IBM COGNOS 8 and it's suite of products was selected as the Enterprise BI tool. It's main use was a historical static reporting tool.
  • IBM COGNOS consistently delivers static historical reports to users across the Enterprise.
  • IBM COGNOS successfully connects to the majority of Enterprise data storage systems.
  • IBM Cognos is a robust suite of tools that deliver complete life cycle business intelligence capabilities.
  • IBM Cognos is a "VERY" difficult tool for common business users to be productive in. This inevitably creates clogged pipeline of unmet BI needs for business areas.
  • IBM Cognos requires such a specialized set of skills in order to be productive, it's impractical for business users to acquire such skills when it's not their primary job responsibility.
  • IBM Cognos would be a very useful tool if the platform provided a non-technical suite of tools that could be leveraged by non-technical company resources.
Given my in-depth technical knowledge and awareness of constantly changing business user needs, it's hard to imagine a scenario where I would recommend such a complex and expensive platform in light of some of the more inexpensive and business user friendly options like Tableau.
  • Crystal Reports Server, SAP Business Objects and Tableau Server & Desktop
IBM Cognos shines when it comes to setting up slow changing historical reports that need to be delivered on a predefined schedule to a predetermined set of recipients.
It took my BI team one year to become productive at developing useful content on the IBM Cognos platform. After this year, the reports being developed for a client were stale and no longer relative to the ever changing needs of the business client. Given the same opportunity, I would select a platform that allows the team to quickly produce BI content. Fail fast and recover quickly!
It really depends on what you mean by adopted. If you mean report recipients, which is usually how adoption is measured, then it was widely adopted. However, if by adopted you mean productive content producers, it was not widely adopted. Maybe less than 1% of business intelligence content producers.
IBM Cognos is capable of connecting to a very wide variety of data sources; no problem there.
IBM Cognos has strong access control, sharing or report distribution and security capabilities. However, the platform could do much more in the collaboration space. In addition, content formatting is rigid and can benefit from enhancements.
IBM Cognos Insight was in it's first or second release when I used it. Chart types were limited to 6 types. Desktop memory utilization was prohibitive. Dashboard creation was not intuitive and quite difficult without extensive training. Data connections were limited. Visual capabilities were inflexible and presented the user with spreadsheet like visualizations without customization.

Cognos is used throughout the organization but under different capacities and for different reasons. There are three tiers: Developers, PowerUsers/Analyst and end users.

Cognos is used to deliver historical reporting through queried data tables and programmable reporting functions. It allows us to get a pulse on how the business is doing and deliver production informatics to our sales and marketing groups.
  • Cognos provides a simple way to view and use dynamic tables to slice and dice data similar to what a pivot table does. Once particular reports or queries have been set, they are easily married with email and pdf functionality allowing us to schedule reporting data deliveries.
  • Cognos doesn't do well when competing with other tools that allow for data mining, digital analytics and also predictive analytics. Its difficult to produce forecasting type dashboards that are dynamic to the end user. Too often you are limited to static views which are not dynamic.
IBM Cognos is scoped specifically for the traditional reporting and analysis tasks using a variety of presentation techniques. These include simple graphs, charts, reports, and tables. For orgs that haven't implemented an organization wide solution, Cognos would be a prime candidate. Probably the strongest feature is the ability to offer a mid tier enterprise wide BI environment solution.
IBM Cognos is a big, all-embracing BI solution mainly to satisfy general needs of many large organizations. It has good scalability. There are however easier to use and more intuitive solutions depending on your need. IBM Cognos is also more costly pound per pound than the competition.
We are heavily tied to IBM with other portions of the business so don't foresee us breaking off completely from their offering, however a better statement would be to say that we will be scaling back some of the functionality we pay for today.
There are about 200 users in our Division.
I'm neutral here as there are not many limitations we have experienced when connecting to databases.
The product is easily used through email and lists distribution.
This is one aspect where the tool lacks that special something when compared to more dynamic options. The visual attractiveness is on par with that of Excel 2002.

IBM Cognos is not used across the entire organization from what I can tell, but only used by select departments, mainly out of necessity, as this is the report designer that is integrated with some of our systems. We are currently using it to develop reports within our Enterprise Asset Management System.
  • It integrates very well with our Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) System
  • Making the reports accessible via the system itself is pretty seamless
  • Ability to add numerous objects to a report gives you many options for developing your report and getting the most data out of your systems
  • In my opinion, it is very difficult to use and it is more geared towards developers that are used to products like Visual Studio
  • I do not like the use of the hierarchical layout under the Properties. It is not easy to determine where data objects will be placed and how they will interact with the system. For example, you can have numerous List Columns in the tree, yet it is hard to determine which is the correct on to place data objects.
  • It may be that we are a hosted environment, but the system is not very flexible with what you can do with it from my standpoint
IBM Cognos is a decent system if it is integrated with one of your other systems already, but if this was not the case, I would lean more towards Crystal Reports, as it is more user-friendly. Trying to accomplish simple tasks in Cognos is very difficult and very time consuming and making updates is never simple.
  • Crystal Reports
I did not select IBM Cognos by choice. It was the report designer that was integrated into our Enterprise Asset Management system. In order to create custom reports for our users, this was they system we needed to use. If I were to have the option of using Crystal Reports instead, I would definitely choose CR.
As stated before, this system is a requirement for report creation in our Enterprise Asset Management system, so it will automatically be renewed when we renew the support for the EAM system. It is really that cut and dry. I would not renew this particular product if I was able to use a different report writer.
IBM Cognos is used minimally in our organization and it is more of a niche product. It is mainly used when we have no other options. Some of our systems require this program be used for all report related functions. As far as I know, it is being used by about 4-5 departments and possibly 10 users.
IBM Cognos (at least the way we have it configured via our hosted provider) does not allow us to connect to other data sources, so I am not entirely familiar with how well or how bad it connects to these other data sources. I do like how everything is laid out for me in the EAM Database and it is easy to choose tables and fields that I need for any given report.
I think that the sharing and collaboration capabilities within the system have not really been utilized too much up to this point. I do like the scheduling functionality and it is fairly straightforward to schedule a report to be emailed to users on a schedule. That is pretty much the extent that we have shared reports thus far.
As with everything else in this product, adding charts and graphs seems much more involved that how easy it is to accomplish in Crystal Reports. It is very cumbersome trying to create the look and feel for a product that would literally take minutes in Crystal Reports. I think IBM needs to work on updating this product from a user's perspective if I am going to change my tune about the product.

IBM Cognos is locally known as RAPS (Reporting, Analysis and Planning System). RAPS is a reporting tool that sits atop the data warehouse managed by Information Systems & Technology. It is used for reporting on a variety of business operations areas, including finance and human resources.
  • Strong at pulling data from a single package.
  • Allows for some data analysis and changing of field names.
  • Provides tools to summarize data and extract into other formats.
  • Limited ability to do advanced analysis.
  • Often crashes when querying more than 500 records on a single filter.
  • Does not easily allow for connections between multiple data sources.
  • Documentation is unclear / unavailable to power users.
Cognos is great for just pulling lists of data, but at least the way it is deployed at WUSTL, it does not allow for advanced analysis. The underlying data must be pulled into a format like Microsoft Excel, and then transferred into other tools like statistical software.
IBM Cognos is definitely more robust as a reporting and analysis tool than PeopleSoft Human Capital Management, in my experience. PeopleSoft is primarily transaction-oriented, rather than data-driven.
We are well-established as an Enterprise user of Cognos, so I am sure WUSTL IS&T will continue using it for years to come. Eventually, it will replace WebFocus for legacy reporting.
Many departments still use Focus, WebFocus, and various home-grown legacy systems. But penetration of Cognos is growing, as the IS&T Data Warehouse grows and more packages are made available.
IBM Cognos does not make it easy to connect multiple data sources. I typically pull the data out using the Excel export option, then work with data in a database environment or in statistical software in order to answer complex business questions.
I probably have not explored the sharing capabilities fully, there are some but I'm not as familiar as I am with the individual packages.
I've heard that Cognos is supposed to have new visualization tools, but I have not seen them in action yet.
