  • Easy to learn and apply in real time projects.
  • Multiple query can be combined to generate simple and easy to understand reports.
  • Mobile access feature helps to integrate with multiple devices.
Cons
  • Cross browser compatibility.
  • Expensive.
  • User roles are not simple.
Likelihood to Recommend
Appropriate to create a visualised dashboard from data. Detailed analytics features using Cognos reports. The software is capable of creating cubes and packages that can be used to extract exactly what you need to visualize in specific in your group you work for.

  • Dashboard creating very quick and intuitive.
  • Good alternative for tableau or power BI.
  • Cognos is used for operational reporting and analytics and schedule reports to be sent via email to users on a duly basis. Used in mobile as well.
Return on Investment
  • Cognos 11 comes with all the latest features expected in a BI tool, the graph generations, and story buildings as well as predictions.
  • Investment in Cognos R&D by IBM is declining. Won't work smoothly with large data sets having many parameters. Cross-browser compatibility is often problematic.
  • Extensive features, vast ability to access, mine and report on data.

During the development phase of the project of certain application, it gets very easier for the developers and integration team to work in tandem when we as a team are able to visualize the changes in almost real time for the application. It gives a different perspective on the whole development process to create and work towards a better application and great project delivery. Mostly and effectively used to mobile applications.

  • How to do guide and there is definitely more training opportunity that company can offer
  • Performance improvements can make the tool more efficient
  • Can be more open to accept the external files
Likelihood to Recommend
During the project development phase it becomes easier to visualize the code development in almost real time with charts and drop down and drag and drop features makes it really easy for the effective development process during different phases of the project. Dashboard itself is of great help with features like drag and drop and visualize the artifacts in real time as we are developing those.
It wouldn't be very effective with high massive coding and huge coding projects as we may encounter performance issues.

  • Microsoft BI (MSBI)
Microsoft BI has many performance issues while working on simultaneous projects or heavy code based projects. That is not an issue with BM Cognos. Lack of some very useful features like drop /down/drag makes it very effective against Microsoft BI. Support for IBM Cognos is more promptly available as compared to Microsoft with less hoops to follow.
