What is IBM Storage FlashSystem?

Organizations today are expected to run more workloads than their current IT infrastructure can support. As a result, they are forced to make complicated choices about which workloads to run or buy additional purpose-built hardware; this leads to a continual bloat of IT infrastructure, inefficient use of floorspace, and increased power and cooling costs. Businesses are in need of enterprise-grade storage with flexible deployment options and economics that fit any IT budget.

IBM Storage FlashSystem is an all-flash storage array that delivers almost 2 PB of effective capacity per single rack unit. Benefits include workload consolidation, a smaller physical footprint requiring less rack space, and lower energy usage which improves power and cooling costs. Additionally, IBM’s all-flash array features fast data delivery, real-time threat detection, and recovery response rates. Unlike traditional storage arrays that use precious compute cycles on data services, IBM Storage FlashSystem is engineered with durable FlashCore Module all NVMe drives. This computational storage technology offloads data services from the array, keeping functions such as compression, encryption, data deduplication, and ransomware attack pattern analysis closer to the data thereby allowing the IBM Storage FlashSystem controller to focus on rapid data delivery.

IBM Storage FlashSystem is an all-flash array that delivers the following:

  • Safeguards data against breaches and cyberthreats with real-time threat detection identifying abnormal data patterns indicating potential cyberthreats in less than a minute

  • Helps enterprises to achieve sustainability goals through efficiency that reduces costs and energy consumption

  • Integrates with critical systems utilizing comprehensive support for virtual infrastructure, containers, and cloud technologies to ensure compatibility across the IT environment

  • Engineered with NVMe technology that provides compression, encryption, and deduplication features without impacting performance

  • Can be deployed to manage critical business workloads such as databases, ERP systems, and SAP with microsecond response times, delivering rapid data delivery and performance for demanding applications

We use IBM Storage FlashSystem 9500 for our mission critical ERP SAP Landscape. It addresses the main issue of latency as it sustains sub-millisecond response times for our massive OLTP/OLAP Oracle Database which has grown over the years to +-40TB. The main feature we use and love is the Advanced Copy Services made possible by a very smart new feature called Policy-Based Replication. With this we clone our Production data every 2 weeks(planned) and on-demand with no performance degradation on Live Hosts. It's very intuitive and simple to use GUI helps us achieve our objectives instantly as the learning curve is very minimal. The powerful CLI helps us automate with shell scripts and/or Ansible which make Operational efficiency a breeze as we now have our SAP developers and Basis doing their own refreshes at the click of a button. Finally the system is so robust and highly available, very fault tolerant and even when a bug is detected it is self-healing and off course fixes and patching has never let us down as it deploys seamlessly.

Our managed customer environment utilizes high-performance storage systems to support demanding IOPS workloads and virtualized backup infrastructure. These systems consistently exceed required random read/write and sustained speeds, ensuring rapid data protection and recovery, particularly in the event of cyber incidents. The access times during the recovery are highly critical due to low RPO and RTOs

We are using P8 and P9 for our storage. All our application databases are hosted on them. Because of the high security required around our products as we offer services to a financial institution, IBM Power 8 and 9 were our best options. It also solved the problem of data loses during upgrades. P8 & P9 have in place checks to ensure upgrade is

IBM Storage FlashSystem are primarily used as back end storage controllers for virtualized pools behind SAN Volume Controllers. These systems have substantially reduced footprint, power requirements and time to deploy. We have deployed IBM Storage FlashSystem to disaster recovery which has also minimized synchronous replication response times too host systems. All open system workloads have been migrated to IBM Storage FlashSystem.
