The DS8000 enjoys a position where few competitors play. The only two serious competitors are Dell/EMC and Hitachi.

On the Dell/EMC side, one must wonder about their continued commitment to FICON and large enterprise storage. It seems as if Dell is really driving the low-end/midrange product and the high-investment products (VMax, Isilon, etc.) are suffering.

Hitachi is a great product as well, but the Mainframe/Ficon support isn't as "native" as they'd have you believe.

I find that I still prefer to recommend the DS8k unless a customer is very committed to EMC, which does sometimes happen. Global Mirror has always been a much stronger replication platform than SRDF/A, capable of maintaining much better RPOs. But it's really the relationship that IBM is able to maintain between z and storage development teams in IBM. The mainframe is a pretty specific environment and it's important to have what IBM brings to the table
