Product Details

What is IBM Video Streaming?

IBM Watson Media (formerly IBM Cloud Video) provides an enterprise video solution, powered by Watson AI, for creating, storing, managing, broadcasting and measuring the impact of live and recorded video.

There are two editions:

  • IBM Enterprise Video Streaming (private or internal corporate communications)
  • IBM Video Streaming (external events and monetized video streaming)

Both editions include storage, event support, custom branding, content management, multi-user accounts, and real-time analytics. Both are powered by IBM Watson AI for automatic speech to text conversion and automated closed captioning.

IBM Enterprise Video Streaming is an internal video solution that secures video assets for employee use (typically access via single sign-on/corporate directories). Individual viewer tracking measures engagement on a per video or viewer basis. This solution is often used in conjunction with IBM's Enterprise Content Delivery Network (ECDN) offering which does stream splitting and edge caching to help protect the corporate network from the strain of video going across the network.

IBM Video Streaming, an external video solution with optional monetization option, powers video streaming for large external audiences. It offers scalability for massive viewership using the SD-CDN, a software defined content delivery network built with QoS (Quality of Service) in mind to reliably deliver video.

Companies can't remove reviews or game the system. Here's why

The usability is very similar to implementation. It's a strength of IBM Cloud Video to have the entire experience be very easy to use. In many ways, the IBM Cloud Video is easier to use and implement than YouTube Live and FaceBook Live. There are no authentication tokens like Akamai or limitations on live player codes. The ability to refresh a new rtmp publishing point is extremely valuable.

I have used other platforms in the past and I must admit that Ustream is not the most straightforward. In addition I have experienced connection issues (still to be verified if only linked to my corporate internet connection). The channel menu is a little overwhelming and packed with options organised in a way that does not match my point of view.

Using and managing the system is fairly simple. Most of the customization is readily accessible, and the only things you can't adjust on-the-fly are channel limits, total seats, etc.

The user interface is pretty straightforward, but simply needs optimization. (Please hire a seasoned UX person to fix it.) However, all of the key features are there and understandable. It's a great platform overall, a bit expensive, and could use some more options for its viewing experience, and a better "smart" embedding window for mobile applications.

Ustream has worked spectacularly for us the last 5 years. We had used many different services and have been asked by partners to try other services, but for the end user, viewing the stream, we have found nothing more reliable and simple to use than IBM Cloud Video. It has reduced tech support for viewers to an almost non-existent amount.

Ustream has a very easy to use interface as well as multiple articles explain the methods and procedure involved in properly utilizing their services. This is very important to the house of worship market, as organizations like ours are often utilizing volunteer to help produce our content. While simple on the surface, the platform has great depth in its customization and tracking abilities. This allows a power user, such as myself, to dig deep beneath the surface of the main settings and create the streaming experience I want to showcase.

While I very much enjoy using the platform I think it is missing some key components that would make my personal satisfaction grow. It is very easy to use but lacks some panache that other CDN players tout. I am keen to take the new polling features for a run and am looking forward to new functionality in the future.

IBM Cloud Video (including Ustream) is simple to use and easy to manage. The reliability of the platform is rock solid and its easy to train others how to use the platform. There are some improvements that could be made to how user data is managed. The analytics platform is helpful in understanding viewer load, but not very helpful for understanding who's watching and why.

Couldn't be more simple to use, and to understand the option on various menus with in the dashboards. I was able to train several people on how to manage content and approved viewers so that the burden is not all on me. They were able to use the system without my help after just one short demonstration. Having a dedicated account rep is also a huge help with training although I personal have never had to use mine.
