What is Infor Birst?

Infor Birst is a BI product that enables a single view of data and eliminate data silos. Additionally, decentralized teams and individual users can augment this shared analytic fabric with their own local data, without compromising data governance. This consistency comes from a unified semantic layer, which maintains common definitions and key metrics, no matter where users sit.

Birst achieves Networked BI through a 2-tier architecture that aligns back-end enterprise data with line-of-business or local, edge data. Birst’s Automated Data Refinement extracts data from any source (data stores, applications, warehouses, big data, and unstructured external sources) into a unified semantic layer. The result is a consistent view that enables users with self-service analytics through dashboards, reporting, visual discovery, mobile tools, and predictive analytics. Birst Open Client Interface also offers integration with Tableau, Excel and R.

Birst goes to market in two primary ways:

  • Direct, for enterprises using Birst for analytics on internal data to drive improved business outcomes
  • Embedded, for all size companies who offer data (analytics) products, by embedding and white-labeling Birst capabilities into their products

Birst replaced Tableau Server. We found that Tableau, while great in a single user desktop environment, did not scale to the enterprise level, both from a cost and a performance perspective. With Birst we were able to provide access to everyone in our organization at 1/3 of the cost of licensing Tableau to support that number of users, and the performance gains were significant.

Birst replaced Tableau. Tableau was an acceptable tool for creating visualizations and reports but it had a few main issues that we could not resolve:
  • The contract structure of Tableau licenses meant that it was prohibitively expensive to give everyone who wanted to access a Tableau report access to the tool. We needed a better way to distribute reporting.
  • Tableau does not allow for very complex data modeling. This is one of the strongest features of Birst in my opinion, the ability to create a data model inside Birst. It's very powerful but also VERY hard to set up properly.
  • At the time Tableau did not have good support for combining data from two different sources. "Data blending" was awkward at best. I think this has been resolved in newer versions of Tableau.

Sisense was used for initial prototyping, but was not used to produce a released product. It was a very capable product, but took considerable time to create and manage.

Birst's automated creation of the data warehouse tables coupled with white labeling and mobile beat Sisense in 2016. We've not looked at an alternative product since then.

Excel spreadmart extracts from our operational system, caused multiple different views of values that should be consistently the same. By having Birst as our single source of truth and common definition of filters for inclusion/exclusion, all are reporting same number for chosen points.
