Informatica is a mature enterprise data integration platform for ETL jobs. Informatica has a suite full of tools other than PowerCenter that can be used for various use cases. It makes sense to know what the entire suite offers rather than just power center so large organizational needs can be better tailored to fit them. It provides great abilities to connect the maximum number of data sources irrespective of being SQL or no-SQL based. Informatica is also database agnostic and can work as well with a legacy database as with the latest ones. The range of connectors it provides enable fast processing speeds which are critical with the increasing amount of data being processed every day. we selected Informatica for all these benefits and to give the client organization a base to have a great data warehouse for years and not just for the short term.

PowerCenter is simply so robust and refined that most other apps cannot do as much as it can. Even Informatica’s own Cloud version is so anemic as to not even compare against it. While from that perspective it feels bloated with too much to navigate through, many of those features eventually come in handy, so you might as well go big with PowerCenter and invest in training and pay decent salaries to keep your turnover low and your productivity high.

SSIS is a good entry into ETL, for smaller organizations or Microsoft-centric companies. It's strengths lie in its ease-of-use, quick turnaround, and simplicity. Its weaknesses lie in scalability and re-usability (you can achieve re-usability, however segmentation is at the project level with no global scale). Pentaho is a great, low cost solution with deceptive power, however scheduling along with flexibility in other functions such as OS level script execution is a bit weaker. PowerCenter and DataStage are more comparable at an enterprise ETL level, having different management philosophies and approaches. For both, there are features in each that I wish the other either adopted or replaced, however due to its place in the market, ease of finding additional developers, and scalability, PowerCenter was chosen.

Alternatives:
  • Talend (open source, cheaper, longer development time, not intuitive UI, harder to troubleshoot, etc)
  • Pentaho (cheaper, better talend)
  • Oracle Integrator (similar as capabilities Informatica PowerCenter, but not as mature, similar cost)

While Talend offers a much more comfortable interface to work with, Informatica's forte is performance. And on that front, Informatica Enterprise Data Integration certainly leaves Talend in the dust. For a more back-end-centric use case, Informatica is certainly the ETL tool of choice. On the other hand, if business users would be using the tool, then Talend would be the preferred tool.

PowerCenter is the industry leader when it comes to interfacing with multiple source and target systems. The graphical interface increases employee productivity while reducing human resource expenditures and training requirements. These other tools offer some similar capabilities, but lack the range and depth when compared with the PowerCenter platform.

PowerCenter is very similar to DataStage, in that they both deal with the movement and manipulation of data from one source/system to another. As we use both extensively at my company, I cannot say how it compares beyond that both are well liked and widely used. I would assume that they deal with different types of data sources, but I personally have only worked with Informatica PowerCenter.

PowerCenter can be run from different types of OSs and can integrate with multiple types of databases and applications compared to SSIS. PowerCenter performs better with any type of database due to its ability to use native drivers to read as well as load data. Due to its seam less integration with IDQ it can clean the data in a much easier and faster way than SSIS.
