Piwik Analytics, also known as Matomo Analytics, is a versatile analytics tool that offers valuable insights to businesses and individuals looking to gain a deeper understanding of their website performance and user behavior. Users appreciate Piwik Analytics' privacy options and open-source concept, which allows them to maintain control over their data.

One key use case for Piwik Analytics is analyzing website usage and visitor behavior. Users can easily install Piwik Analytics to fill the gaps in their current analytics reporting and gain quick and detailed views on how visitors interact with their projects. By tracking metrics such as point of entry, visitor demographics, and search keywords, Piwik helps users make informed decisions related to website performance and optimize their efforts accordingly.

Another important use case for Piwik Analytics is its role as an alternative to Google Analytics. Many users choose Piwik over Google services to manage site metrics for client sites or personal projects. With its depth of information and ownership of data, Piwik provides a valuable option for businesses who are concerned about their privacy or want more control over their analytics.

Matomo Analytics, in particular, offers additional features such as the funnel analysis and heatmap analysis. The funnel feature helps identify pages with high user drop-off rates, allowing users to optimize the subscription model or improve the user flow. Heatmap analysis highlights areas where UX design changes may be needed to prevent users from getting lost on the home page.

Overall, Piwik Analytics is a trusted tool for website owners and marketers who seek comprehensive insights into user behavior, website performance, and campaign activity. It fulfills various needs such as tracking active users, enhancing user experience, measuring website performance, recognizing visitor interests, and benchmarking system behavior. Regardless of whether it is used in marketing departments or by open-source projects, Piwik Analytics continues to provide reliable analytics while respecting user privacy.

Open-source customization: Many reviewers have expressed appreciation for Piwik's open-source nature, as it has allowed them to customize and modify the platform to suit their specific requirements. This flexibility has been highly valued by users who need a tailored analytics solution.

User-friendly data presentation: The visually appealing and user-friendly data presentation in Piwik has been highly valued by many users. They have found it easy to understand and navigate through analytics reports, which has facilitated their analysis of website data.

Support for multiple sites and useful dashboards: Users have found the support for multiple sites and useful dashboards in Piwik to be highly beneficial. This feature allows them to efficiently manage and analyze data from different websites in one centralized location, making their workflow more streamlined.

Difficult Customization: Some users have found it challenging to create custom data sets for tiles/tabs and expressed frustration with the lack of clear instructions on how to do it. They mentioned that the process could be more straightforward and would benefit from additional explanations.

Lack of Help and Support: Several reviewers have mentioned difficulties in getting data to populate after clicking certain buttons, such as the 'WP-Piwik - SEO' button, and felt that the lack of help on the site was unhelpful and frustrating. They emphasized the need for more comprehensive documentation or support resources to assist users in troubleshooting issues.

Limited Features Compared to Competitors: Some users have expressed disappointment with Piwik's goals functionality, stating that other analytics packages offer more comprehensive features. They feel that Piwik falls short in providing advanced goal tracking capabilities, which are available in competing platforms.

Initially, Matomo seems like a decent choice and alternative to GA. While I have not used GA, and only Matomo is a terrible alternative to GA. When you run a software product - customer service is everything, and with Matomo treating their customers terribly, their product is nothing. Stay from Matomo and find an alternative as we did.

Matomo is a full-fledged website tracking and analytics tool. It offers everything and then a bit more that GA has to offer. I cannot conceive of any situation where this programme would be "less appropriate". You can use it for each and every website and do well with it. The data it provides includes everything you could wish for (country, IP, new user or not, actions taken, goals achieved etc.)

As an on-premise analytics tool, Matomo is great and recommended for internal data measurement like intranet community data. Matomo could help to understand and test the usability of a website.
But big online eCommerce platforms should use an analytics product with more features like AT Internet, Adobe, Econda or Mapp. Matomo's filter and segmentations are very limited and the visualization is rudimentary, but it's safe and perfect for small websites, low budgets, or where strong GDPR guidelines are required.

Our company provides subscription and payment services for mobile operators and we also launch our games and music portals for users. For measuring web analytics KPI, we use Matomo because its open-source and the privacy policies of Matomo are very clear and they don't send data to third parties which is very important for our company. None of our customers have any problem using Matomo as a web analytic tool.
For those who want to have advanced event analytics of apps and web at the same time, maybe it is not the best solution. they need to have an extra tool to track all the interesting events on the web and app.

Matomo is a great alternative for monitoring and tracking your web applications because:

  • It is free.
  • You own the data on a local database; with some SQL expertise, you can get customized reports easily.

It is not suited for you if:

  • You have the budget for software purchase and don't care where the data is stored.
  • You don't have some technical skills to install it or use the SQL for custom reporting(if needed).

The best place to use Piwik is when you need complete control of your data including the IP addresses of your visitors. I have used it to identify troublemakers, and it's also great that you can use custom variables to identify users. It great to be able to see who is accessing the site, to see exactly what they are doing and make marketing and content decisions with this data.

If Google Analytics is too complicated for you, than Piwik is probably not the best for you. If you are going to use Piwik like Google Analytics, at least you have control of your data. So I would recommend that. But if you are really into the stats on your website and don't mind getting your hands dirty, you can find no better analytics platform than Piwik.

This software can be installed manually or via a third party installer. Those less happy with coding may prefer to check availability of Piwik via the web host before choosing it as a preferred option. That aside, the important issue when choosing any analytics package is whether it tracks the range of data that you need. Piwik is very rich in this respect.

I found that implementation of the system overall was very easy and that providing custom URLs that hooked into a specific dashboard without requiring a login mechanism worked very well. This makes it easy to fold in a Piwik installation as a replacement within a hosting management system, such as CPanel.

I would suggest Piwik Analytics to users that have a decent understanding of code and databases. I am not a coder, but I do have a good grasp of HTML, CSS, PHP, SQL and the how it is structured in relation to WordPress. If you are a novice, beginner or just starting out, you may find yourself in over your head very quickly.

If you want to easily track visitor behaviour anonymously on any website, and have the possibility to enhance the data by a good API, Piwik might be just the right thing for you. Piwik is an open source project, where participation is possible and welcome. By installing Piwik on your own server you will have all your statistical data in your own place and not in any cloud space of a third party company.

Piwik is useful for beginners to web analytics or those that have been using it for some time. It proivdes ready made reports and graphics that can get a point across easily, but also gives you a lot of raw data and allows you to dive deeper into the numbers if need be.

Depending on the type of analytics research you are trying to attain, there are situations when perhaps another product might be more suitable. In general, especially for the price, this product seems to have all your basic needs, you can see what's popular, and geo locate your users. It all depends on your company's particular needs, and a newer version might have more functionality than I worked with.

I always recommend using Piwik as a secondary option to Google Analytics, especially since Piwik comes built in with graphs. For someone who needs to present weekly or daily numbers of website statistics to upper management, Piwik provides an easier solution compared to Google Analytics. The home page also provides an overview of data which the user can easily identify any needs or changes with one quick view.

I think the question whenever to pick or not to pick Piwik as an anlytics solution will largely depend on the skill-set of developers and current company's infrastructure. Obviously, Piwik has a vast amount of data available, comparing to the other big name analytic data providers, but I have worked in the company that preferred to host as little as possible on their servers, so Piwik would not be a good solution for them. Also, the price is a major factor. New Relic was super expensive, where Piwik was free (as far as I could remember)
