We leverage the Micro Focus LoadRunner tool suite to validate that our applications (internal and external) can support the expected load to run our day to day business as well as future spikes in volume. We are able to easily perform various load scenarios against our applications with the toolsets using various technologies including SOAP, Rest and Web Browser.
  • Easy to provide varying and dynamic test data
  • Continually easier to test browser apps more realistically
  • Simple config to make 'any' scenario
  • Ability to manipulate near any input type
  • Ability to easily interrogate responses for accuracy
  • Working with large request bodies can be cumbersome
  • Would love to see a C# version
Micro Focus LoadRunner and its suite of tools, specifically VuGen works wonderfully for us for all web, http/https and web service calls. We've been able to build tests for near any scenario we need with relative ease. As long as we have crafted up requirements for our scenarios / scripts to managed scope, we've had high success working with scripting and data driving. Our main tests are web service calls - typically chained together to form a full scenario with transactions measuring the journey or a similar (measure along the way) journey through a browser. For web services we will use VuGen and browser we've shifted to Tru Client I have had little-to-no experience scripting against a thick client where a ui-driven test would be required. I know its possible but quite costly due to the need to run the actual desktop client to drive tests. We've been fortunate enough to leverage http calls to represent client traffic.

Micro Focus LoadRunner is one of the primary tools used by our shared services performance engineering team, to address all scripting/execution-related tasks across all the applications of the company that fall under the scope of performance.
  • Separation of generators, controller, and script builder
  • Ease of access of different components
  • Better configuration availability for script setup
  • Better customer service
Micro Focus LoadRunner is good for scripting and running a load test, but should be providing better customer service in case of user facing any issues.

Loadrunner is being used by specific departments that are doing QA in our company. Not all QA teams use this software for their use, it is specific departments. It clearly addresses issues related to performance and load of software applications. Every software that is created has to go through this process and we need to understand what a large client-base would do to our applications. It measures performance and generates reports.
  • It can simulate multiple users at the same time and help understand the performance.
  • It can generate excellent reports and give insights into application performance.
  • It is a fast tool and does not take time to perform its functions.
  • The UI of the software can be improved.
  • It should also have integration and testing or automation with mobile UI.
  • Configuration settings are a bit complex.
It is very well suited under situations where there is a test required for concurrent users and firing several service calls on the application. It is very good at getting these results accurately. It can test multiple calls at the same time and also has connectivity with the servers. It supports multiple applications and networking technologies by using specific modules.

I Love HP LoadRunner

HP Load Runner is a great industry standard load testing tool. We are using it across the whole organization as well as outside the organization to serve all our multiple regional clients from the US, Europe, and Asia-Pacific region and others.

HP Load Runner addresses the application performance management issues by spoofing the hits of each user to the web server and it helps to identify the bottleneck of the web application. All the metrics captured or generated by this tool are highly trusted by software engineers worldwide which make this tool more popular and supported.
  • Support of multiple protocols like HTTP, RDP, Citrix, SAP, Oracle Database 12c, AJAX Tru Client, SOAP-based calls and others which is why it is used widely in our organization as we are using various applications in an industry for different usage.
  • Supporting the mobile agents which means it is not only used for web applications but also for mobile applications.
  • Latest version of HP LoadRunner makes the scripting easy by replacing dynamic changes in the script using correlation parameters. This means less coding and we can focus on major issues if needed.
  • Controller enhancements by specifying the cloud provider like Digital Ocean. We can provision our load generators with Amazon EC2, DigitalOcean and others.
  • Analysis provides a nice HTML report on the test executed with all the necessary metrics. We can simply put more analysis if needed and it will be automatically embedded in an HTML report.
  • HP LoadRunner with new patches and releases sometimes makes no longer support older version of various protocols like Citrix, which makes the task time-consuming when using older versions of LoadRunner for some of the cases. So it should support older version as well while upgrading.
  • Configuring HP LoadRunner over the firewall involves lots of configuration and may be troublesome. So, there should be a script (power shell script for Windows or shell script for Linux users) to make it easy to use and with less pain.
  • I would like to see the RunTime Viewer of Vugen in HPLoadRunner based on the browser I selected in the run-time configuration to make it feel more realistic as a real user.
  • Licensing cost is very high when we need to perform a test on application for a specific group of users.
Below are certain scenarios where HP LoadRunner is well suited:
  • Whenever it is required to simulate the behavior of a real user on a web application or mobile users then it plays a vital role.
  • A deep dive analysis report for each configured metric in the server is observed in the analysis tool and we can put the same in the HTML report if we want that.
  • When you are a beginner with no knowledge of a performance testing scenario, HP LoadRunner is a good choice as it provides great support from HP and excellent documentation as well as online forums for helping out.
Below are some of the scenario where it is less appropriate:
  • If you have a low budget for performance testing for your project and if you know the methodologies of performance testing, you can switch it to some open source tools rather than HP LoadRunner as it is costly for supporting multiple users.
  • If you want to run a test of multiple applications at same time, you cannot use controller to do that as controller is used for performing a test of one application at a time.

HP Performance Center in combination with LoadRunner is an excellent choice for performance testing of your application. You can choose a load you wish using vuGen and configure your app and database servers and then with minimal scripting in C can enable it to performance test your application. This tool gives you cool analytics on different load parameters like throughput, transaction time etc., and the reports are very easy to understand with cool graphs. I sincerely recommend this tool for any application and or API performance testing.
  • Ease of use and configuration settings.
  • Super cool performance test reports with various load parameters.
  • Flexible load selection using vuGen and option to steadily ramp up and ramp down the load.
  • Minimal coding in C which allows you to parameterize many inputs.
  • Load runner integration with HP Performance Center makes life easy for management to review the performance test results.
  • Monitoring tools like SiteScope, AppDynamics should be used apart from HP Performance Center. Would be great if the tool can give good monitoring on app and db servers.
  • As the load goes high, the cost increases. In the open source world, it's not a bad idea to consider the licensing cost.
It's great to test a front end application which interacts with various DB servers and APIs. The performance reports generated are easy to understand and are very extensive. LoadRunner integration with HP Performance Test Center is a great idea as it helps management folks to easily access the performance test results. Including more monitoring capability within the tool is an area to consider along with the license cost.

Most of our leading clients use HP LoadRunner. They have their own COE in most cases and we as consultants help the client to develop their practice and take it to the next level with our innovative ideas and best practices. The COE supports the organization's performance testing requirements. LoadRunner in most cases has been able to support all performance testing requirements for the organization.
  • Multi protocol support. LoadRunner supports many protocols unlike any other tools while web/http being their strong suite.
  • User friendliness is key. Neat interface. I see the tool has evolved over the years and most custom written code now comes with LR commands built in. Also you do not need to use short keys anymore you have the options on the dashboard to to pick and choose like the steps toolbox. Now you do not need to be an expert to correlate a dynamic parameter. The user guided features enabled in the new versions makes everything simple while saving a lot of time
  • Reporting features. The LR Analyzer is the best reporting tool in the market - you have many options to cater client needs. Not every client wants to have the same report.
  • StormRunner is the cloud version of loadrunner which supports web/Ajax/Services etc. This is a great tool as this is less expensive compared to the whole LoadRunner suite. The clients who cannot afford to spend a lot of money on getting the LoadRunner commercial suite could spend a little money in getting HP StromRunner and still do most of the things that LoadRunner can perform.
  • Diagnostics side is something they could focus on. That is probably the only battle they could possibly lose when it comes to Performance Engineering. Tools like AppDynamics & Dynatrace is far better and most organizations now tend to have at least one of these two tools in their suite in addition to LoadRunner.
  • Protocol Ajax Truclient is a great find but it needs improvements. While this adds value it also has a few drawbacks. This protocol does not always work as intended. The Firefox version has evolved but the Chrome and IE version of Truclient needs improvement
  • Every tool has its own bugs and LoadRunner is not second to that. With every new version they release we have seen more and more bugs get added and also some of the key features get dropped as well. For example the checkbox "Add a comment in the script for correlations that gets created". This checkbox is no longer in the recording options hence by default all correlated values get commented out in the script thereby causing memory issues due to the size of the scripts. This is one thing that we came across and HP is working on getting this feature added back in a future release.
When you have challenges in scripting an application that has too many dynamic variables, using a protocol like Ajax Truclient will help in big way and save you a lot of time rather than creating that script in web/http and wasting a lot of time troubleshooting to fix the errors.

HP LoadRunner is being used to performance test our enterprise solution during every major release of the product.
  • It is fast and easy to create scripts for performance testing using VuGen. The ability to handle dynamic data is much easier to deal with and viewing it through the VuGen is easier than using an open source tool.
  • Being able to create your scenario based on ramp up, think time, and other settings is a breeze within the controller.
  • The ability to interact more at the client presentation layer. They have introduced a new protocol to help for example to interact with the web browser, but it can't handle the latest technologies in web development.
HP LoadRunner is well suited for testing web applications.
