Microsoft Project is used by various groups throughout the organization primarily for compatibility with client requirements. It is as a tool for managing work, providing estimates, and measuring project success.
  • Microsoft Project has broad compatibility with other Microsoft products.
  • Project is used commonly, so the ability to use it at least at a basic level is a virtual pre-requisite in the project management industry.
  • Project is full featured, including task heirarchies, resource leveling and tracking, relationships between tasks, gantt charts, and reporting tools.
  • Most features of MS project are more difficult to use than other project management tools.
  • Occasionally, it is necessary to (gasp!) print the project plan. Project doesn't have a very robust facility for printing.
  • Creating some reports, even basic ones, can be byzantine.
Project is well suited for organizations that rely solely on Microsoft products. It is less appropriate for more agile organizations and teams.

  • With respect to ROI, we had limited success integrating Project with Outlook. Any savings garnered from using AD, were lost with the clunky implementation and feature set.
  • User adoption with MS Project was low. Most users couldn't understand how to use Project, which forced project managers to manage tasks instead of managing projects.
After using other web-based project management tools, Project would not be my first choice.
No
I can't justify paying for premium support. The product should be intuitive and free of bugs.
Self-directed help is usually just frustrating. Help Desks don't seem to be knowledgeable enough to provide good answers. There doesn't appear to be a way to get immediate help without great expense.
Yes
No. My bug grew a long gray beard and eventually died without getting any attention.
Shortly after installation, I reached a support representative who resolved a Gantt chart issue quickly and easily. He understood what I was asking without lengthy explanation or going down a rabbit hole. The secret ingredient was listening.

Microsoft Project was the tool of choice to communicate progress on big projects. It does carry your project into the proper formatting as most of the features it has are correctly named after the project management principles of modern project managing. It solves the common format for communicating with other companies or for tracking of big plans. And if you are lucky to have built your infrastructure on top of the SharePoint and Project Server solutions, then you're in for an expensive but robust solution that covers all the features you'll likely need to manage any type of project, of any size.
  • Gantt chart making is the most valuable feature as it can include Active Directory info and allow for corporate resource planning over extensive and complex projects.
  • Exporting of information works well as most solutions accept the mpp format as common input.
  • Synchronization with SharePoint content. Well, it is an MS solution.
  • Online capabilities are complicated to acquire (licencing) and without SharePoint and Project Server there's really no online experience.
  • The interface is delivering the MS experience, too many features, most not used by anyone but NASA maybe.
  • No direct notification of flow view within the user experience natively.
Well suited for big corporate cross team and cross enterprise projects. Not suitable for agile communication between teams and providers. Not suited for building a knowledge base based on projects.

  • Negative - It delays projects for overcomplexity of task completion when not used by more than one PM on a big project.
The strength it has is that it's the best complete solution for project planning. I would choose Microsoft Project over cloud solutions only if the requirements specify self-hosted solutions or that it allows integration with the AD and other corporate tools. But be prepared to spend a buck.
No
It is not a Tier 1 product.
They have 24/7 support, but you seldom need it.
