Companies can't remove reviews or game the system. Here's why

  • Performance monitoring and detection of anomalies has decreased the overall downtime by more than 50%
  • NOC team can now monitor critical assets and inform relevant teams with ease, which has improved service SLA by 70%
  • With integration with other System Center products we have achieved over 95% business system uptime

  • Being able to monitor the performance and security of our (mainly) Microsoft products has prevented some (small) disasters. Ranges from full disks that were predicted to complete databases that were about to become inconsistent.
  • To manage Operations Manager requires more than basic knowledge. After training and working a lot with the product you should be able to effectively monitor your landscape like we do.

  • It has allowed the enterprise to standardize on a single platform for monitoring.
  • Easier troubleshooting of issues with Microsoft platforms.
  • Greater visibility of issues across platforms when applications are hosted in a mixed environment.
  • Additional costs for monitoring systems that are not directly supported with additional packs (iSeries, Linux on Power).

  • Allowed us to proactively monitor consumption of resources (storage) to proactively schedule upgrades if necessary
  • Allows us to proactively visualize if a server or workstation processor is being over utilized and in need of a replacement, configuration change/upgrade.
  • There have been no negative impacts other than the time it takes to get it set up and configured. Knowing what you want to monitor and the thresholds you wish to set take can take some time, but the ROI comes quickly after that.

SCOM is the Bomb!

  • Since we are at the tail end of our POC, we have no immediate ROI to report.
  • That said, during the POC, we immediately identified several issues within TFS that we immediately addressed and will potentially save us hours of lost time and troubleshooting.

  • We wanted to make sure that updates and patches deployed are actually successfully installed on devices and other tools cannot match SCOM for detailed feedback on deployment status.
  • We can now confidently provide management and security teams on successful update of security patches with high accuracy.
  • Deployment complexity took over a year to fully implement all necessary features with help of consultants and in house teams. Wish it was simpler.

  • First point: it depends if you have to pay for the System Center suite or it is already part of your licensing (for example, some versions of Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter had a System Center license included). If you have it already, the overall cost is lower.
  • Second point: number of people in the IT department and IT budget. The "Proof of Concept" and roll-out phases of an SCOM deployment require some effort, especially for customization. A small IT department with no budget for consultancy could achieve a limited benefit from this solution having no time to tailor it to the specific needs.
  • Third point: number of Microsoft products deployed in comparison to other vendors. A company that is using a huge number of different platforms, with Microsoft just being one of them, could prefer other monitoring solution.

  • In the beginning it was hard to get all the admins to get on board with our SCOM procedures because there were a lot of false positives and needless pages for being made. However several years later there are fewer skeptics and each team find some value in some of the features.
  • SCOM is an expensive solution the more servers you have.

  • It has allowed us to provide an Enterprise Event/Alert management solution to the Global company
  • It has taken a long time to get it to provide valuable alerts and information, lots of user resources and investment.
  • It assists with 24/7 monitoring and out of hours support

  • SCOM already saved us several times during our own datacenter issues, because it warned us about that and helped us to root cause the issue. But be careful - it works right only if it's configured right (and that's not easy part).
  • SCOM is a platform and many monitoring extensions for SCOM are available for free (especially for Microsoft products). It makes SCOM more interesting as a monitoring solution comparing to competitors.

  • Objective: Increase Reliability - Positive - Operations Manager gave is the deep level monitoring we needed to fix the underlying issues that affect the stability of the infrastructure and applications.
  • Objective: Provide Executive Level Dashboards - Neutral - Operations Manager has dashboard capabilities, but we added Savision LiveMaps to Operations Manager to provide better dashboards.
  • Objective: Reduce Overall Product Cost - Positive - We were able to remove many paid products from the environment with Operations Manager Monitoring.
