It is being used by multiple application groups and on infrastructure level. We use SQL as our main windows database engine, and Share Point for collaboration moving to o365 and Sharepoint cloud.
  • SharePoint collaboration and dashboards, visual reporting and easy repository
  • SQL database and maintenance and easy Reporting services.
  • SQL backup wizard for backup and restore could be improved to be more like more modern backup tools, better file management.
  • Easier maintenance planning and job management.
  • Easier UI for being able to create new Sharepoint sites for sharing.
Very good for vanila environment with out a lot of customization where where reporting services can be used for ad hock reporting.
Selected because of easy setup and easy maintenance. Better pricing model on a Microsoft platform.

They represent sometimes analytics and sometimes the sale reporting teams. We also use SQL to support a lot of our application database back end.

Skills like DBA or systems admins, we have also the network team that helps support SQL and developer that helps support share point.
  • We might start using for some data consolidation
  • We might start using some of SharePoint cloud features for improved collaboration.
  • Collaboration
  • Data aggregation.
  • I would not call it innovative but was able to use SQL to consolidate multiple small database platforms.

SharePoint is used as a document management system, for portals, team sites for collaboration, across whole organization. SharePoint solves one main problem - preserving and managing organizational knowledge.
  • Simple to implement in vanilla approach
  • Big community
  • The main pros: it's big platform which can be customized in very simple way to relevant business need. And this is a big con too
  • Good UX
  • Based on implementation - not so big maintenance cost.
  • Can be fully implemented as self-service approach - users can create sites/libraries/pages by themselves.
  • Performance, when implementing in global environment
  • Limited actions in OOTB Workflows
  • No OOTB option to create Read-only columns in Lists
  • No OOTB option to create dependencies between columns in the List
  • Too many helper tools, need to know where to use and how to start
  • Lock-in with Microsoft
What problem do you plan to solve? If it is just one specific problem, you should find the specific product for this problem as SharePoint will be not a good solution. If you want to solve several problems by one platform, like DMS, CMS, BPM, Collaboration then SharePoint is the right solution.
We are using the product and consolidating all our on premise environment into the cloud (Office 365).

  • Invite Microsoft to review design and approve it
  • Microsoft gold partner not mean that you will have supported solution
Not implemented in best practice way, there are many customizations.

MS SharePoint/SQL is being across our organization as a intranet to connect our business units and the leaders with their employees. We use the message board to relay information, and department pages to allow employees access to information about their business unit.
  • Relays information
  • Stores important MS documents
  • Enterprise organization for department executives
  • Editing pages could be more user friendly.
  • Attach departments to documents, like file sharing.
  • Connect with LinkedIn and Twitter
If a company is looking for a tool that provides enterprise communication through the web, MS SharePoint is great to have. Uploading files also acts as a file storage that allows people to access documents for quick information relay.
Its integration with MS products is a plus. SharePoint does well as an information hub because it allows users access to an array of tools that can be used to manage documents, files, workbooks, etc... while allowing some control and security with the use of permissions and access. Because it is a Microsoft product the learning curve is relative small with new users.
The reception to SharePoint has been positive. People seem to like the functionality it provides each department. It allows users that have the correct access a large amount of editing capabilities to give them the freedom to construct and implement tools within their SharePoint page that other products do not.

Anybody from IT to Human Resources to Business Intelligence uses SharePoint as a way to relay information and communicate with employees.
2
Navigation of permissions and access is key so someone will have to know how that environment looks. Also, if editing of pages is to be left to one person or team they will have to know how to edit within SharePoint. Any functionality within SharePoint will need to involve some minor programming so a SQL expert would not hurt to have either.

  • Personal profiles
  • Graphical representations of company metrics
