I have implemented the Anypoint API Manager for our 3 clients. For us, Anypoint API Manager is the main and only point of entry to access our Web APIs hosted in a hybrid environment (on CloudHub and on-premise). We are managing our API access policies from the API Manager. It's really very easy to control the access of API through API manager. One can easily enable or disable policies without much effort and with zero downtime cost. Below are few policies which we majorly implement for our clients-
1. Rate Limiting
2. Basic Authentication with LDAP
3. SLA Based Rate limiting
4. IP whitelist/blacklisting etc.

There are many other cool features provided by Mulesoft API manager but above ones are commonly used. OAuth 2.0 Token authorization is also very easy to implement with API Manager.

  • API Manager provides easy API Policy Governance. You do not have to manage multiple platforms for managing the policies.
  • Supports hybrid Mule EBS environments. You can configure both CouldHub-based and on-premise-based API using Mulesoft API manager in a similar manner.
  • It's very easy to implement API proxy.
  • User friendly UI.
  • Single platform to manage all.
  • Mulesoft does not provide independent API Manager solution. Unlike some well-known API Management platforms, for example, AWS API Gateway, you cannot manage or configure APIs which are hosted on some other platforms (i.e. WSO2, Fusion middleware etc.). So, you always have to purchase the integration solution with API Manager.
  • If you compare the Anypoint API manager costs with its peers like AWS, it is very costly and that's why it does not attract small organizations.
Anypoint API Manager is well suited to organizations where they want to manage the entire API lifecycle from a single platform. For organizations which have implemented their integration layer with Mule ESB, it's the perfect platform. They can design, build, deploy and manage all of their APIs from the Anypoint platform.

For organizations where the cost is a major decision-driving factor, they can opt for some other cheaper options like AWS API manager, Layer 7, etc. So basically, the features which you're getting ready-made in Anypoint API manager you can manually configure in AWS and save some money.

  • Easy implementation - Policy enforcement is quick and easy, which in turn saves a lot in implementation costs.
  • Lower maintenance cost - Since it is hosted on Mulesoft-managed cloud, there is no maintenance cost involved.
The main reason why we chose Anypoint API Manager is because it is well suited with the APIs developed in Mule ESB. AWS, on the other hand, is a very good tool but still evolving and offers a small set of API management features.

Some of them are Business users (policy managers), some are developers, and some of them are from an analytics background.

You need to know the basics of web APIs and have some knowledge about API terminologies.

  • We are planning to enable OAuth 2.0 for our APIs.
