  • SolarWinds has saved us money and downtime by monitoring system processes and giving us solid data to know when we should upgrade hardware.
  • We bought SolarWinds mainly to monitor and manage our devices but have found that is can do much more that we had anticipated when has made it so we don't have to purchase other tools.

  • Pricing -- with many of the feature add-ons, SolarWinds can be very pricy for a small MSP.
  • SolarWinds Backup (formerly Maxbackup) integration -- the dashboard only provides an external link to manage your SolarWinds Backup. So you cannot manage them within the dashboard. The only backup that you can manage is the SolarWinds RMM Backup.

  • The SolarWinds name carries a good bit of clout in the industry. This has definitely helped secure a few deals.
  • The addition of Cloud Backups had a positive impact because we were able to easily add it as a bolt-on for existing clients. We have now added this offering to almost 20% of our managed servers.
  • We are in the process of moving into a "co-managed" business plan. SolarWinds RMM has facilitated this by allowing us to help in-house IT teams with offloading server management and maintenance while they are able to focus on big-picture objectives.

  • The ROI is immediate for us. The advanced alerting alone makes this product an ace in our bag. The confidence you have in your network is wonderful.
  • Another big ROI we get from the advanced alerting is the peace of mind that our engineers feel. We are a 24/7 shop, so being on-call goes from being hectic to extremely manageable.
  • The only negative I can honestly say is when the time comes to patch the product. Micro-patches are easy enough, but jumping versions can be a bit taxing.

  • We generate a modest profit selling the RMM service itself.
  • Greater revenue is generated from fixing problems that are detected by RMM. This provides greater customer uptime as many problems are detected prior to system failure.
  • We view RMM as an indispensable tool in managing our client server and desktop population.
