NAKIVO Backup & Replication has proven to be a cost-efficient backup solution for VMware systems, offering a range of use cases that cater to different customer needs. Users have found it particularly suitable for migrations and data protection at multiple customer sites. The proprietary change tracking method in NAKIVO has helped save costs by minimizing storage and time required for backups. This has made it an effective tool for replicating virtual servers between different storage area networks, or SANs, in data centers and backing up data across office locations. Additionally, users have leveraged NAKIVO to back up both Windows and Linux virtual machines, including those in sandbox environments.

The software has been praised for its easy installation process, user-friendly interface, and compatibility with different hypervisors. Its immutability feature offers assurance that backups are safe from ransomware encryption, making it a reliable choice for protecting sensitive data and services in healthcare organizations. NAKIVO Backup & Replication also stands out as a dependable option for disaster recovery, providing features for site recovery and orchestration. With its optimization of storage usage through deduplication and compression, users can reduce costs while maintaining data integrity. Overall, NAKIVO Backup & Replication is a versatile solution suitable for businesses of all sizes, offering VMware backup, replication, O365 backup, and physical workstation backup capabilities with ease of configuration and excellent support.

User-Friendly and Cost-Effective Solution: Many users have found NAKIVO to be a user-friendly and cost-effective virtual backup solution. They appreciate the ease of installation, configuration, and setup of backup jobs. Some reviewers mention that NAKIVO's competitive pricing provides good value for the features offered.

Efficient Technical Support: Reviewers have expressed satisfaction with the technical support provided by NAKIVO. They appreciate the quick and kind responses from the support team, both during the trial period and after purchasing the product.

Confusing User Interface: Many users have found the user interface of the software to be confusing and have experienced a learning curve in getting used to it. They mentioned that navigating the backup view of a VM repository is cumbersome, as clicking the '<' button takes them back to the first page instead of the previous page.

Inefficient Backup Wizard: Some users have suggested streamlining the backup wizard feature to make it more efficient and user-friendly. They also requested customizable subject options for email notifications and the ability to view detailed information such as recovery points and backup types for each object in the repository.

File Share Recovery Improvement: Users have mentioned that the file share recovery feature should be improved as it currently requires downloading a zip file instead of directly recovering files into the filesystem. They also requested a more efficient space reclaim operation to prevent unexpected growth in backup space requirements.

We have been using NAKIVO Backup & Replication to perform virtualizations and backups of our company's servers for 8 years. We have several physical servers and, within them, several Virtual ones. To avoid a disaster, we have the same virtual servers on all our physical servers, some in production and others stopped, in such a way that if a server stopped working, we would pick up the ones that are not working at that moment and everything would return to normal in a few minutes. For that, we use NAKIVO Backup & Replication to create the virtualizations of the servers that are working and distribute them in the servers to be able to recover them in case of loss of one of the physical servers. We also carry out virtualizations in case we have a malware or ransomware attack on any of our servers to set up a replica and function again as if we had not had the attack. We use NAKIVO Backup & Replication because it allows us to make these replicas because it also allows us to make retention points to return to a replica made a few hours before or a few days or weeks before the disaster occurred. We also make backups of the servers to have a copy and be able to recover a server or file in a granular way. It is slower than setting up a replica, but it allows us to have them outside the company so that in the event of a physical disaster on the servers, we can recover the system.

Any company that has its own virtual servers, should have NAKIVO Backup & Replication. It is an essential replication and backup tool that they will need at some point in their lives, since the possibility of a malware attack or a problem in a server can occur at any time, and you have to be prepared for it. I see it less useful for working with replicas and backups in the cloud. At first, it goes quite fast, but as time goes by, backups become slower and slower, at least in my little experience with it.

  • Is amortized by one hundred percent
  • It has solved the problems we have had without problems
Although the first investment in the purchase of the program is high and it is difficult to explain to the accounting department the need for the product, in the long run, it pays for itself, and as it has more and more compliments, we have not decided to change the product, because we already have experience with NAKIVO Backup & Replication and we are doing very well.

I think you must be a computer or technical person to know what to do with NAKIVO Backup & Replication despite being very intuitive.

When we decided to buy this product, I had just taken a VMware course and was not aware of any VMware backup products. I tried Veeam Backup and NAKIVO Backup & Replication, and at that time, NAKIVO Backup & Replication was much easier to use and had the essentials version, which was cheaper than Veeam had.
In principle, I always value the simplicity of use and price. So if I had to go back from scratch, I would do it the same way.

  • Understanding what a transporter is
It is very easy to do in all the formats in which it is implemented, whether as an appliance, in a windows machine, or an implementation in NAS. I only use the appliance one, but I have tried all of them in trial mode to know which one interested me more.
When I needed support, they always tried to solve the problem, including the language problem. I speak and understand English quite poorly, but when I have been with them or they have put a bilingual person for me, or they have been patient in the explanation. Regarding the technical aspect, they have solved the problems, and when they could not, they connected to the company and saw what the problem could be solved.
Essentials Pro because I needed a license for a higher version than the one I had, this was already very old and whenever you buy a license, you have to have one year of support, which seems fine to me.
I could not connect to a NAS, and a technician was teaching me how to configure the NAS so that I would not have problems when creating a repository on it. He explained to me how I had to do it step by step, we even had problems configuring the NAS (it takes a long time to restart), and he offered to put it in another one that works better so that I could see how the process was carried out.
Its use is quite intuitive. The wizard takes you through the different steps you must take and tells you what you have to do in each case, and also shows you the steps you are going to have to take, so it does not give you the feeling that you lack nothing.

We use NAKIVO Backup & Replication internally and install/manage the product for clients. The requirements are to backup VM's, Physical machines and provide ransomware protection. Mission-critical systems are able to use an hourly schedule to create current backups to NAS storage with time-locked and immutable options. The business problems that Nakivo addresses are secure guaranteed backups that can be restored with minimal effort, the backup frequency for data currency, negligible impact of system performance, and no downtime when installing and upgrading Nakivo. The ability to run a VM from the backup is valuable as it reduces the downtime where a full restore time may be too long for a client. The primary scope is Hyper-V and physical backups with support for NAS storage of all types.
  • Frequent backups do not affect the server load especially when the store is based on a high-performance NAS. We use OMV and average a GB per Minute per backup.
  • Offsite backups to a hosted store on AWS or Wsabi is simple.
  • VM replication is simple to set up.
  • Backup compression and encryption is excellent.
  • Add an option set preferred default Job settings to speed up creating jobs.
Any size organisation from small shops to large enterprises. One dashboard can manage many sites. It pays to get experienced support to assist with the installation and management of backups.

  • Ensuring that any system can be restored in the event of an incident is invaluable. This is a huge positive.
  • High speed restores and Flash boot of VM's has reduced negative productivity impacts.
Very responsive support on all queries and issues.
The interface is logical and clean, especially on Version 10.5. It is very simple to get a grasp of the Nakivo design concepts and to implement them. Installing a Transporter on target systems and centrally managing the backups reduces staff requirements through a centralised management console. It simply does the job.
The pricing for VM backups is good value for money as it does not limit how many VM's per socket. This works well for smaller sites with simple backup requirements. Physical machine backup pricing would more attractive with a sliding scale based on the number of physical machines.

General IT skills suitable for SME environments. Experience with Windows and Linux servers and data preservation protocols. An understanding of backup best practices for VM's, databases and general data is essential.
  • Multiple backup locations supported - at least 3 locations on different platforms is recommended.
  • Immutable backup support - We use the Linux destination to protect against ransomware.
  • VM booting while restore in progress.
  • Used in normal backup and restore situations.
  • Replicating a VM from Dev to Production.
After using Nakivo for 2 years it has proven to be reliable and simple.
Yes
Altaro Backup was replaced. We replaced Altaro with Nakivo due to pricing and VM backup issues. The pricing and license terms of being able to backup unlimited VM's was a huge incentive. This allowed for simplicity for our clients. The Altaro issue we encountered was the limit of two VM's on the Altaro free edition for small clients with one server and a few VM's. Upgrading for $579 per annum to the Paid Edition was too big a step. $99 for Nakivo was better valued. The Altaro error issue was with failing backups with VM snapshots hanging and not clearing, and the "baseboard" error requiring a reboot to fix. With Nakivo, no issues on the same server and the same VM's. The fact that Nakivo can be installed, uninstalled, upgraded without requiring a server reboot is a huge advantage for support staff.

Price in our weak ZAR/$ context in South Africa is a very important factor. Multiplying each $ by a factor of 18 puts most $ based solutions out of reach. It is unfortunate that we have to deal with a weak currency at the expense of data safety but it is a reality.
Unlikely to change the evaluation and selection process.
Pricing and reliability put Nakivo ahead of the others. The simplicity of installation and ease of use was also very attractive in deciding on Nakivo. Products with massive installation and configuration requirements are not suited to the SME market.

Configuring a dedicated Nakivo backup server with local storage and additional Linux NAS storage units for immutability is key. Backed-up data is only useful if it can be restored.

Nakivo Backup & Replication is a great product and works well in my environment to provide backups of the virtual servers on my VMware hosts both locally to a NAS and offsite to Amazon S3. It was very easy to set up and manage and the new bandwidth management is a very nice addition.
  • Cost effective VMWare backups. Easy to set up and use and a reliable product.
  • Bandwidth management is a very nice new feature.

  • Very cost effective for smaller virtual environments. Scales nicely to larger setups also.

Nakivo is more cost effective, so it scales to smaller VM environments better than Veeam. Both are great products though.

IT Director with over 30 years IT experience. Nakivo is not difficult to install or setup and the operation is all graphical menu based so it is pretty simple to administer the backup jobs. Reports are excellent also.
  • We backup all of our VMWare hosted servers onto a local NAS storage device using Nakivo.
  • We also backup all of our VMWare hosted servers AWS using Nakivo.
  • I love the bandwidth throttling on schedule so that we can control the load based on our working hours.
  • The way we have chained our backups together was so easy and works great. Simple and effective way to get all of my backup jobs completed.
  • The reports from each backup job are very informative and useful.
  • We will continue to backup our servers as we add more in the future.
It's great. It works, it's cost effective and it's easy to maintain. I don't see us ever changing away from Nakivo Backup and Replication to any other product. We are very impressed and satisfied with the results.

  • The AWS storage space setup was more difficult than the Nakivo setup itself. AWS has so many choices it's confusing sometimes. Nakivo is simple.
It was simple and easy to implement and went very quickly.

When we initially installed and setup Nakivo with AWS we setup our own transporter and storage space at AWS. We then had issues with those backups failing. After contacting Nakivo support they connected to my workstation and worked with me to install the Nakivo appliance at AWS and properly size it for our needs. It worked and has ever since then.
As with any support, it can always improve, but since the result has always been getting my issue resolved quickly I can't complain. Nakivo support has been great to work with when I have needed them, which hasn't been often.
  • Backup job creation is very easy and quick.
  • Monitoring the job progress on the dashboard is simple and understandable.
  • I haven't found any overly difficult functions in Nakivo.
It's an easy, simple product to use and maintain.
