Companies can't remove reviews or game the system. Here's why.
NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP is being used by multiple customers and internal labs. This solution set was introduced as part of our go-to-market strategy for cloud storage as a service. We leveraged the configuration and monitoring aspects of the suite to provide visibility and insight into the storage environments and how they interact with business services. The major problem experienced by us and our customers was lack of insight.
- Dynamic mapping of storage devices--topology mapping
- Data tiering--compression and deduplication
- Centralized management of all storage components
- Tighter integration with third-party (non-storage) monitoring tools
- CMDB classifications break down when integrating with ServiceNow
- Migrating storage workloads from one cloud service provider to another
Our cloud storage expenses have seen a slight reduction as part of this implementation. Greater visibility into our hybrid cloud storage footprint and the consumption patterns have been invaluable. We are now leveraging this data to better predict when we need to purchase, reduce, or reallocate storage for a just-in-time usage methodology.

We are leveraging NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP for our cloud migration to AWS and also for Disaster Recovery purposes. NetApp [Cloud Volumes ONTAP] has been huge in helping us stand up a cloud-based DR environment for our Tier1 and Tier 2 applications. Since we leverage NetApp for our primary and secondary on-prem storage (block and file-based storage), [NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP] has been a nice supplement to allow us to stand up NetApp volumes in the cloud using a familiar interface and move storage workloads fairly seamlessly between on and off-prem. We have been very satisfied with what NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP has brought to our storage capabilities as we make our digital transformation and has helped us solve some of our data gravity issues.
- Migrate on-prem storage volumes to AWS
- Provides Disaster Recovery in the cloud options
- NetApp [Cloud Volumes ONTAP] has been very stable so far!
- Integration with Azure and GCP is behind compared to AWS
- NetApp support can be "touch and go"
- NetApp Documentation seems a bit lacking
NetApp [Cloud Volumes ONTAP] has reduced our overall cloud storage expenses by giving us more options rather than the default AWS sku's. Their data reduction algorithm helps compress and deduplicate the data on the wire and at rest to help save on egress and regular storage consumption costs as well. We also have better visibility into our storage footprint so we can target old and unused data to get rid of it to save money too.

We currently only use NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP to offload and store snapshots for disaster recovery. It is used across all of our critical production data across all departments. NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP allows a simple way to offload storage requirements while having another tier of redundancy. We are a pretty small company but have some high-end needs in terms of redundancy and disaster recovery.
- Simplicity
- Flexibility
- Cost savings
- Additional cloud vendor support
- Expanded capabilities
- Lower pricing tiers for licensing
- Free/included entry tier
We don't use any other cloud storage, so we don't really have a comparison. This is our first foray into utilizing cloud storage.

NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP is used by the entire organization to manage storage volumes on AWS. We use NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP to provide a consistent, easy-to-manage, reliable, high-functioning, and scalable storage management solution across our AWS environments including support for the AWS Government Cloud.
- Ease of allocation and management of storage in AWS
- Less costly than the native storage management on AWS over 10Tb
- Performance and scalability
- Easy to setup and configure
- More competitive pricing at lower volumes of storage
- Make it possible to manage storage across hybrid and multiple cloud environments
NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP provides a reduction of cloud storage costs by 15-20% with storage volumes of over 10Tb. However, under 10Tb NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP can cost as much as 20% more than AWS native storage management. You should balance your need for easy-to-manage storage volumes with increased performance against the volume of storage you will be managing.
