NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP is being used to run one of our internal applications and as a tertiary backup location. This product has allowed us to dramatically decrease our hardware footprint which has cut costs in many ways. The product also seamlessly deployed into our preexisting NetApp infrastructure which led to an easy and speedy deployment.
  • Integrates into major Cloud vendors.
  • Integrates with NetApp infrastructure.
  • See additional integration with other storage vendors.
  • Create single pane of view with integrated ONTAP systems.
NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP has been greatly suited for running some lightweight applications our company uses as well as serving as a tertiary target that we mirror off to our Cloud Volumes ONTAP within our Cloud provider. The transfer of data runs very smoothly and consistently which has been tested thoroughly with ingest/egress. I do not believe this product would serve well for our large proprietary applications due to the effort it would take for us to shift workloads to the Cloud at this time.
  • Increased savings from on-prem data center costs.
  • Ease of integration into preexisting environment.
Cost was a huge factor and ease of integration and deployment led us to ultimately choose NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP for our tertiary backup design. For our lightweight applications, we chose NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP because we were able to kill two birds with one product and have the deployment efforts and time kept at a minimum which again helps saves cost.
We utilized NetApp remote Professional Services to assist in our deployment and also engaged support since the deployment for assistance regarding some networking concerns. NetApp support was surprisingly quick to reply and very proactive in resolving our concerns much quicker than other support personnel from many of our other vendors we use. No complaints about NetApp support at this time.

We currently only use NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP to offload and store snapshots for disaster recovery. It is used across all of our critical production data across all departments. NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP allows a simple way to offload storage requirements while having another tier of redundancy. We are a pretty small company but have some high-end needs in terms of redundancy and disaster recovery.
  • Simplicity
  • Flexibility
  • Cost savings
  • Additional cloud vendor support
  • Expanded capabilities
  • Lower pricing tiers for licensing
  • Free/included entry tier
It is well suited to store lower-tier data in the cloud to free up space on primary storage. For our use, it is really only currently viable for things like snapshots and backups. Other organizations may find it useful for secondary-tier archival storage as well. At this point, I don't really trust any cloud solution as primary storage for anything. This may change in the future, but for backups and such, it is a nice option.
  • Not really any noticeable impact yet
  • We are utilizing the free tier that is provided as a promotion with current systems
  • It remains to be seen if it will continue to be enough value to renew the subscription
There really isn't any other option for a work-alike, particularly if using NetApp as primary storage. For us, the option was to just not have this extra tier, utilizing more storage space for snapshots and leaning more heavily on our separate backup servers. We still use the separate backup servers, but having the snapshots also available gives us more options for restoring data.
Haven't had to use it.

NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP is used by the entire organization to manage storage volumes on AWS. We use NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP to provide a consistent, easy-to-manage, reliable, high-functioning, and scalable storage management solution across our AWS environments including support for the AWS Government Cloud.
  • Ease of allocation and management of storage in AWS
  • Less costly than the native storage management on AWS over 10Tb
  • Performance and scalability
  • Easy to setup and configure
  • More competitive pricing at lower volumes of storage
  • Make it possible to manage storage across hybrid and multiple cloud environments
NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP is best suited for larger storage volumes (>10Tb) where increased performance is critical within cloud environments. It provides easy-to-set-up, configure, and manage storage volumes with a familiar management interface if you have ONTAP in your data center storage environments. NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP can be a better solution than the native AWS storage management solutions because of the extensive storage management features available based on NetApp's years of expertise.
  • Increased costs at lower data volumes but better pricing by 20% over 10Tb
  • Easier to manage storage volumes with NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP
  • Better performance with NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP
We evaluated AWS Storage Gateway against NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP and we found that NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP outperformed AWS in the following areas:
  1. It is easier to set up, configure, and implement than AWS.
  2. It has an easier to use and familiar storage volume management interface and it is easier to operate.
  3. It performs better than AWS consistently with the workloads that we implemented. Your mileage may vary.
  4. It has better pricing at larger data volumes (>10Tb) but can be more costly by 10-15% at less than 10Tb.
I have used NetApp solutions at various companies in the data center over the past 10+ years. NetApp always provides exceptional customer support with excellent support during setup/configuration and implementation. No professional services or consulting needed to get up and running quickly. Ongoing support and maintenance is also excellent--not that we need to use it very often due to the excellent reliability of NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP.

NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP is being used by multiple customers and internal labs. This solution set was introduced as part of our go-to-market strategy for cloud storage as a service. We leveraged the configuration and monitoring aspects of the suite to provide visibility and insight into the storage environments and how they interact with business services. The major problem experienced by us and our customers was lack of insight.
  • Dynamic mapping of storage devices--topology mapping
  • Data tiering--compression and deduplication
  • Centralized management of all storage components
  • Tighter integration with third-party (non-storage) monitoring tools
  • CMDB classifications break down when integrating with ServiceNow
  • Migrating storage workloads from one cloud service provider to another
NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP was well suited to begin our journey to cloud storage as a service. The ease and intuitiveness of the product to enable our administrators to design, configure, and deploy the storage in a hybrid cloud environment was instrumental to the success and the early adoption of the service.
  • Positive Benefit: Measurable customer satisfaction increase by 50% attributed to visibility
  • Positive Benefit: Go-to-market time saving--reduced time by two weeks
  • Neutral Impact: Integration with third-party monitoring was not made easier but was able to be completed
ScienceLogic SL1 and SolarWinds Storage Resource Monitor (SRM) were the closest competitors to meeting our business objectives. Tivoli Storage Manager was not able to meet the initial requirements. There was a significant overlap of capabilities between ScienceLogic SL1, SolarWinds SRM, and NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP. The latter provided a more positive and cohesive experience for our administrators and executives.
Customer support was extremely knowledgable and friendly. When we had instances where we needed to escalate the issue to engineering, the transition was seamless. The service desk personnel did a proper job of triaging the issue and relayed their findings to engineering so we did not have to waste time repeating the same steps.
