I have not been able to use similar platform though in service delivery and functionality capacity this is the most effective tool in our company. The entire organization data and workloads are always under secure environment when managed by this great platform. Efficient cloud and on-premises data management software
It is used as the operational center of our data storage system. It organizes our data and stores it in different folders according to our preferences. It has a powerful security layer that provides security to our stored workloads throughout. It has an advanced system that promotes faster transfer of files from one user to the other. Data access from this product is easy from anywhere, provided the user has all log-in details.

I have only used NetApp ONTAP Select platform in our organization in data storage and file management. It has efficiently managed all data-related problems and gives us the right roadmap of managing data from all sources effectively. Data migration from our company to the cloud storage datasets has been easy and secure. It provides reliable intelligence from all information gathered from our data sources that enhances better operations and smart decisions.

NetApp is a great all-in-one storage appliance
We use NetApp as our primary file system for our Windows shares / mapped drives, as well as for NFS storage for our virtualization environment. We have multiple filers across various sites. We utilize several features including snapshot and snapmirror. It is used across our whole organization at multiple locations.
- Offsite replication is seamless.
- Snapshots are easy to implement.
- System Manager is easy to learn and manage the entire system.
- System Manager is feature rich.
- More details on network interfaces are available in CLI. Would like to see similar visibility on the GUI.
- Deleting volumes that have been snapmirrored have to be released at the snapmirror destination first. Would be nice to have that feature at the source where you are deleting the volume.
- When creating a volume in the GUI it adds to the default junction point. Would be nice to choose the junction point as you were creating the volume (this is a feature available in the CLI).
- Ease of use allows for training engineers/technicians on it's use. It's not a complicated system to learn
- The ability to consolidate file servers and SANs into a single appliance minimizes cost and complexity of a storage environment.
- Great system monitoring and auto generation of tickets helps manage and warranty the system. For example, drives go bad, a ticket auto generates and they ship out the drive right away.
For me, this system has negated the need for a file server so I have been able to remove any Windows servers that were used exclusively for file storage / shares. It reduces the complexity and additional layers needed to get to my files. It has more features and capabilities than the Dell Equallogics I have used in the past. This is my first time having an all in one storage appliance and I prefer it now over previous storage methods.

NetApp System Manager: A System Manager Made for Managers
NetApp ONTAP System Manager is used within our organization to manage our NetApp filers through a web interface. NetApp ONTAP System Manager is a very easy and intuitive GUI for managing your SVMs, volumes, shares, etc. We use it to make the typical day to day changes but it can also be used to change networking configurations, "rehome interfaces," check diagnostics, and set up SnapMirror relationships.
- System Manager is extremely good at resizing volumes, changing snapshot policies and making day-to-day changes.
- The Dashboard and the Hardware and Diagnostics tabs are a great window into the health of your filer and Cluster. You can immediately see any issues like volumes that are nearly full or errors in the event logs.
- Like any "single pane of glass" GUI implementation, there are always settings and configurations you can't include.
- System Manager cannot make specific/complex configuration changes. For example I had to log in to make changes to "fpolicies" and the users associated with them.
- The biggest positive impact is time and efficiency. I no longer have to go through several log files to find what I'm looking for. I no longer have to type out a long command to simply resize a CIFS share volume that has been filled up. Simple right click and resize. It just makes things easier.
- The only negative impact is that an over simplified GUI sometimes makes administrators complacent. It is important to keep in touch with the command line syntax in case you need it.
I've used NetApp systems for the last 12 years. The only alternative I have used is the old OnCommand system. This is a drastic improvement over what was available in the past. The ability to use this software from anywhere inside your network is huge. If you were to combine this with VPN access you could easily monitor and configure your NetApp from anywhere in the world.

The two people that use NetApp ONTAP in our organization are the heads of the infrastructure side of the IT department. One person uses it predominately and the other only uses it when necessary.

The only real things required to use ONTAP System Manager are a little NetApp knowledge and some basic technical know-how.
