NetScout nGeniusONE has been widely adopted by multiple departments within companies, especially by operation teams responsible for managing and operating infrastructures like networks and data centers. Users have found this software to be immensely helpful in monitoring service performance and supporting root cause analysis for network performance degradation and outages. With the implementation of nGeniusONE, the system has been effectively operationalized into a monitoring solution for all IT organizations within the company. It enables the baseline of applications, facilitating alerting and reporting for further investigation of issues. The deep packet inspection capabilities of nGeniusONE trace connectivity between clients, providing detailed information on packet drops and potential reasons behind them, as well as other parameters related to network functioning. This feature greatly improves network stability and generates triggers and alarms for packet drops caused by connectivity issues or link flaps. Moreover, nGeniusONE acts as a valuable monitoring tool for enterprise or large organizations by identifying network problems and potential losses through the analysis of network connectivity and stability. It is also utilized to monitor multiple links between branch offices to ensure traffic flows correctly and within an acceptable timeframe. The software provides a user-friendly graphical interface that displays easy-to-interpret traffic statistics, allowing engineers to delve deeper into packets when necessary. nGeniusONE proves particularly useful when troubleshooting network issues since it provides metadata and packet-level data, granting better visibility into network activities. Dashboards can be easily set up for quick views into the network, while utilization of baselines helps identify abnormal behavior. If further analysis is required, packet level data can be exported and sent accordingly. With its extensive use cases such as bandwidth capacity management, analysis of top talkers and applications, VoIP call analysis, SharePoint traffic analysis, NetFlow analysis at every site, and data center packet capturing, NetScout nGeniusONE is globally employed at over a thousand locations for comprehensive network traffic analysis. It is leveraged not only by the Telecom department but also by the applications departments and service desk for initial incident triage.

Reliable and Effective Solution: Multiple users have found NetScout nGeniusONE to be a reliable and effective solution for deep diving into the packet layer and identifying network and service performance issues in the protocol layer.

Long-Term Reliability: Several reviewers have mentioned that they have been using NetScout nGeniusONE as their main monitoring solution for many years, indicating its long-term reliability and effectiveness.

Easy Troubleshooting and Analysis: Many users appreciate how easy it is to troubleshoot network issues with NetScout nGeniusONE. They mention being able to capture problematic connection sessions using various filters, export pcap files for further analysis, and easily go back to history captures and logs when investigating intermittent or hard-to-capture connection issues.

Slow performance when analyzing large network captures: Several users have reported that analyzing and downloading big size network captures on NetScout nGeniusONE is slow, especially when adding more filters. This issue has been mentioned by multiple reviewers and they hope for improvement in this area as the data being analyzed continues to grow in size.

High pricing: Many reviewers have expressed their concern about the high pricing of NetScout nGeniusONE, making it difficult for smaller businesses to afford these solutions. The cost of the software in this niche market has been noted as a major drawback by several users.

Complex deployment and configuration process with poor technical support: A significant number of users have found the deployment and initial configuration process of NetScout nGeniusONE to be time-consuming and requiring a considerable amount of effort and expertise. They also mention that the technical support provided is inadequate, as solutions are not provided during initial meetings and multiple follow-ups are required.

We primarily use nGeniusONE for troubleshooting of issues across the network. By entering the source/destination we can get the metadata and packet level data to have good visibility into what is happening. Additionally, dashboards can be set up for quick views into the network and utilizing baselines, find out if anything is out of the norm. Packet level data can be exported and sent for analysis if necessary as well.

It’s best for troubleshooting issues that require a packet level analysis. By having source/destination you can have a view into how the packets are traversing the network. If alerts/baselines are set up it can help identify something out of the norm. Very useful for VoIP applications as well. Would not recommend for small scale environments.

Requires quite a bit of training not only for config but to use. Highly recommend having a SME come in from Netscout to help initially for these. Once you learn the UI, it’s much better to use but is not intuitive.
We have a dedicated OSE who has been very helpful. Besides that, we have little experience beyond this specific model.
They are different as one is more used for network config management and SNMP polling. Netscout is more of a packet level, metadata, baselining troubleshooting tool. Both I’d recommend but for different purposes.

It is used globally at over a thousand locations for network traffic analysis, including NetFlow for every site and datacenter packet capturing. The analysis includes bandwidth capacity management, Top Talkers/Top application analysis, VoIP call analysis, and SharePoint traffic. It is used by the Telecom department and recently started to be leveraged by the applications departments. We are also leveraging the service desk to use it for initial incident triage.
  • Good NetFlow collection and analysis.
  • Complete suite of network and application analysis features in one tool.
  • Integration of network and application metrics for comprehensive performance analysis.
  • The interface is very cumbersome and not intuitive.
  • Lack of a strong and understandable API for integration with other tools.
  • High cost.
Great for detailed real-time and historical network and application (over the network) utilization analysis. It works well both for capacity management and live troubleshooting, mostly focusing on the network performance for the applications running over it. Not appropriate for detailed routing analysis (follow full routing path), application performance analysis at the client or server level (before/after reaching the network).

  • Positive: Improved incident MTTR (Mean Time To Resolve), reducing business downtime.
  • Positive: Proactive bandwidth capacity management improving financial visibility and business productivity.
  • Negative: High maintenance required for large organizations with very dynamic changes.
It provides a lot of useful information, but it's not always easy/intuitive to find it. It really needs to get a fully functional API integrated to support automation and integration with other monitoring and analytics tools to enable faster decision making. On the other hand, it gathers a lot of useful information from complex networks that are useful for capacity management and faster incident isolation and resolution.
If you spend the right amount of money with them they work very close to you to support your needs. I ignore how they work in companies with lower expenses on their products. NetScout is not a very dynamic introducing platform with enhancements that their customers need. We contract their professional services so support level is good, although too pricey from my perspective.
SolarWinds provides better modularity, improving your ROI by paying only for what you need as opposed to paying for the entire suite whether you need it or not. It also seems to be much more intuitive. However, I'm not sure that it provides packet capturing functionality for security and advanced troubleshooting purposes.
ExtraHop was evaluated but I'm not sure that it was any simpler to use than NetScout. However, it seems to have a more robust API that we could totally use.
