I have used NS in manufacturing and subscription based companies. Manufacturing use is a bit more difficult when dealing with shop floor control and WIP but I would still recommend.

NetSuite is a best in class cloud base ERP solution for small to medium size companies. Cracks start to show in the software as business leaders have tried to add new features to make it a 360 solution. New features such as SuiteHR are often half-baked and seem to be used more in sales and media to prop up the stock price of Oracle (especially before acquisition)
Best in class could based ERP solution for small to medium size companies
Customer support tries to very helpful. However, quality of support has gone down since the acquisition and implementation of ACS as more and more customers are being pushed to this subscription support service

I've done a reimplementaiton of Oracle EBS, and as NetSuite knows, the cost to switch to a new ERP is crazy big, especially for a public company. Also, no need currently to change

SuiteBundles and Workflows are clutch
Yes, to get better and more timely support
Yes
It remained open for about 4 years before finally getting resolved. I do not know if NetSuite considers that timely or not. (Hint, I laughed and don't think reporting bugs is that great of an option if you want a timely resolution)
Yes, when I showed up to SuiteWorld after being one of the first customers to implement ASC 606 and when asking direct questions in meetings, I was given multiple phone numbers of people so I wouldn't keep asking questions

Best in class cloud based ERP for small to medium size companies
Uptime is super reliable as evidence by the trust site
Only complex reports take a long time to run, and often the solution is to run in the background and have it emailed to you
Suitebundles, or 3rd party integration tool. Overall, integration was pretty easy to achieve
  • Kyriba
  • Concur
Concur does. Kyriba has a suitebundle as well
  • Single Signon
  • API (e.g. SOAP or REST)
  • AppExchange or similar marketplace
Some integrations that use SuiteBundle take all of the guesswork out of the actual integration
Trust 1st party suitebundles, and if they don't offer their own bundle, then that should be considered a red flag
I was not a part of the sales process. Since moving to Oracle though, pricing and room to maneuver with the pricing has changed (harder)
Once you land a deal, any vendor then wants to expand. However, they also know that it's hard to leave so they keep that in mind during renewal time

We used NetSuite for sales rep quoting, order entry, maintenance renewals, customer service, accounting and finance.
  • It is exceptional at quoting, ordering, invoicing, revenue recognition, install base, renewals, purchasing, vendor billing, general ledger and financial reporting. Furthermore it is extensible, in that you can use java scripting and/or custom objects to manage requirements that are unique to your business. It has robust and flexible customer and item management capabilities.
  • NetSuite is an intuitive business application that support best practice business processes. When implemented and managed properly, it can handle the great majority of business processes in a scalable, open and secure environment.
  • The NetSuite platform also has an open API that enables integration with Salesforce. This requires a very clear integration methodology though. The methodology we used placed resulted in lower complexity and reliable uptime. Additionally, it had proper internal controls.
  • NetSuite e-commerce is evolving. Historically, the knock against it was user interface. NetSuite is spending considerable time and effort to improve this functionality though.
  • Also, as of late 2014, Advanced Projects now spans Project Management, Resource Allocation and Job Costing/Budgeting. They have been taking best practice workflows from OpenAir and putting them into native NetSuite. This solution will continue to be enhanced.
I enjoyed my experience as a NetSuite customer so much so that I started my own services company. We are focused on Salesforce and NetSuite. We are a NetSuite Solution Provider - reseller, new implementations and optimizations for existing NetSuite customers. We are focused on the software and light manufacturing/distribution verticals. All of our NetSuite customers have been very happy with the results. http://www.saascg.com/our-clients/

  • This is tough to quantify, as our business was growing rapidly, so it was almost impossible to attribute specific numbers to NetSuite only. But, I estimate that we cut administrative costs by ~ 30% with simplified billing, licensing and install base management. We dramatically improved renewals cash flow by automating the process via NetSuite.
  • We were up and running on the NetSuite GL in 1 month. We went live on Customer Support by the end of month 3. We fully implemented NetSuite with full integration to Salesforce within 5 months. We acquired 2 companies and opened up an office in Cork, Ireland in this same time period.
  • Oracle eBusiness Suite,QuickBooks Online,QuickBooks Pro
NetSuite architecture is far superior to any of these. Technically and business process wise. Robust revenue recognition, multi-company, multi-currency. Scales to meet entire business requirements.

We used NetSuite Professional Services in a shared services model. They would meet with us and walk us through specific functionality. Then we would setup the rest of the functionality ourselves. For example, they would teach us how to enter an account in the chart of accounts, then we would enter the rest.
Executive involvement is critical. Make sure you have a good handle on the metrics you would like to ultimately manage. Work as a team to document your business requirements. Whiteboard often. Understand NetSuite's best practice capabilities. Have a central person identified to handle all report and analysis requests (ie - don't allow multiple people to create reports; have one person create reports and distribute them to decision makers via the NS dashboard or whatever form). Make sure you understand critical dates and develop the project plan accordingly.
  • Online training
  • Self-taught
It was for me, but I believe that is because I have a public accounting background with a heavy emphasis on business workflows, risks and controls. Plus, I was an Oracle Applications Sales Consultant for 8 years. But for most organizations, I would recommend training sessions by functional area. Additionally, NetSuite has excellent Help documentation.
NetSuite's SuiteCloud platform allows you to easily adapt NetSuite to meet your company's business process. You can control the information that is accessed and entered by each user of your NetSuite account. There is a simple point and click interface for configuring standard fields, forms and reports and for creating custom fields and forms, custom record types, transaction form layouts, and custom centers (role based dashboards).
No
In my opinion, the best place to go to answer your NetSuite functionality questions is their Online Help. It is excellent. For true support questions, NetSuite offers a Knowledgebase to its customers. Also, for ERP, NetSuite has licensed accountants that provide support. With any support organization, you must be thorough in describing your issue though. NetSuite has several different support levels - http://www.netsuite.com/portal/services/support_main.shtml
  • Fields and forms are easy to configure.
  • Order to Cash, including revenue recognition.
  • Multi-company, multi-currency
Yes
NetSuite's support for mobile devices—iOS, Android and Windows Phones—ensures that your business users get real-time access to the information they need.
Overall NetSuite is very intuitive. Usability is the direct product of a proper implementation - the way you configure form layouts, add fields, assign permissions and develop workflows.
NetSuite has a published 99.5% uptime guarantee.
In my experience, NetSuite's server and network performance has been good.
  • Salesforce.com
  • A custom product licensing system on SQL Server.
We initially created a custom object for quoting in Salesforce then integrated the transactional (line) item detail. This is very challenging, as you are recreating items, pricing, discounting, etc. Plus, this requires the integration to transfer all of the transactional detail leading to more inherent risk of failure. We redesigned the integration to allow Sales Reps, on an opportunity in Salesforce, to click a button to launch the Sales Rep into NetSuite where they could enter the quote in NetSuite. Order Management could then process approved quotes to Orders and eventually Invoices. We transferred Quote Header (ID, amount, expiration date) information back into Salesforce so that Sales Manager could run Opportunity and Quote reports (ex. which opps have quotes that are expired). Best of all worlds.
  • In my current role as President of SaaS Consulting Group, my team has done many integrations.
NetSuite now supports an integration with Salesforce.com.
  • File import/export
  • API (e.g. SOAP or REST)
  • Javascript widgets
https

The SuiteTalk Platform provides programmatic access to your NetSuite data and business processes through an XML-based application programming interface (API). Generally speaking, the SuiteTalk Platform has the following characteristics:

  • SOAP encoded web services – the SuiteTalk Platform uses SOAP-based web services with document style, or Doc style, encoding.

Doc style encoding consists of message-oriented exchanges where an XML schema specified within the SOAP message defines the structure of any messages sent between two applications. RPC exchanges are NOT supported.

  • HTTPS Transport – currently the only transport supported is HTTPS as defined in the WSDL document.

Plan out your business process. Leverage each system's core process strengths (ex. NetSuite item master, quote to cash). Reduce transaction line item integration whenever possible.

We use NetSuite primarily as a finance and accounting tool, though it is also used to track implementation launch data (we're a software company).
  • As long as they are mainly interested in ERP/accounting I highly recommend. If buying for as an accounting tool, NetSuite is excellent.
  • The integration across your primary business processes e.g. order to cash, procure to pay is strong . If you want high level or to see the details, it does so exceptionally well.
  • Revenue recognition is one of the best out there.
  • It is excellent for international. It is the cheapest way to consolidate and add companies.
  • All main and secondary records are exposed as APIs.
  • Netsuite has demonstrated a solit commitment to its platform recently, with major improvements in functionality in recent releases.
  • There are still to many random system limitations. These are typically small at this point, as many have been fixed over the years, but too many still remain. For example, the native journal approval functionality can't be referenced in either script or workflows.
  • Price increases: NetSuite will try to increase your cost every year. It takes a lot of negotiating work to minimize this.
  • Recurring billing: their module is largely a copy of Zuora, and isn't integrated into their core platform.
  • Accounting segments: currently, they only support four segments (subsidiary, account, department, class). More would be better, as would more flexibility in the chart of accounts
  • Some of the NetSuite tax engine is good up to a point, but if your tax needs are complex, you need to look at 3rd party app vendors like Avatax.
  • If you are a larger company and want to print checks and layout checks, you need to use a 3rd party tool like CreateACheck - a non SAAS tool, but it integrates well to NetSuite.
  • They have never have been in the business of migrating, integrating data which makes initial implementations more difficults
  • Workflow tool could use improvement
If you need an accounting tool, and are too big for Quickbooks yet too small for Oracle, NetSuite is likely an excellent choice. It's still not a one stop shop for everything, e.g. manufacturing has lots of room for expansion, as does professional services support, but core support for GL, AP, Revenue, AR, etc., processes is excellent.
  • Scalability and better control over data.
  • Reduced use of error prone Excel spreadsheets.
  • None.

All in one go.
Change management was a minor issue with the implementation
I wasn't here for the implementation, but from what I've seen, I would rate it a 5-6. I would recommend contracting with a NetSuite partner. Data migration can be a big driver of implementation complexity.
  • Online training
  • Self-taught
Online training is quite strong. I have used for specific pieces of functionality. However it is not sufficient in all areas.
Depends. As an end user, if you're generally computer software fluent then you should be fine without training. If computer applications don't come easily, then training is highly recommended. If you're a new Admin/developer, or just generally responsible for your organization's NetSuite instance, then training is critical.
Yes
We are on a Gold premium support package. I think it’s necessary if you are of any size. I wouldn’t want to live without it.
It has gotten better in last year or two, but as an experienced NetSuite user, I know more than many of the support reps and have to escalate. You cannot directly go higher, unless you are partner who pays for partner support. I have the general complaint that they don’t always fix the things you want i.e. bug fixes etc. but I have gotten used to it. I average finding one defect every week, however they are usually small and unimportant. The pace of product development feels slow for this day and age. But as an admin, I don’t think I would want to go through more than two releases/year.
It’s largely consistent across different functions, such that if you learn one aspect, it’s relatively easy to figure out how different things work. The help documentation is quite robust. The integration between the application and help is quite effective. By contrast Concur help is poorly integrated.
Highly reliable
No issues with access at the end of the quarter.
  • Salesforce.com
  • Concur
Salesforce.com. Currently, limited integration in existence. Most data is re-entered manually. We are using Boomi for middleware, however there is a basic mismatch in data in the two systems (Netsuite, Salesforce.com). For example, the company P&G is represented in Salesforce.com as all the individual brands, but in NetSuite is billed at a single company level. There are parent/child structures in both, but we weren’t able to get them aligned. It could be more of an implementation issue with each application. Concur – All payments are made out of Concur. Bill and payment record flow into NetSuite to hit the GL. Once a day in the morning, previous days approved expenses migrated to NetSuite. My overall advice is to think through your number of end points – systems, data volume, as well as specific requirements for records. Not all Connectors are created equal. I have seen integration tools that connect to NetSuite, but don’t support the notion of add a sub i.e. not built to support OneWorld.
You can get hefty discounts at the EOQ.

  • Good at handling most/all accounting needs; very customizable; little or no IT support required; strong revenue recognition module; works very well if used as designed and you are careful with your customizations; lots of add-ons also available to suite specific business needs.
  • Customer support by the vendor is not good - can be very frustrating at times for a lot of reasons, best to find a good third party support vendor and/or strong in-house administrator expertise; cloud based system is not for everyone - can be frustrating for accounting staff not comfortable with the cloud; can be a challenge/expensive if you want to bring high volumes of transactional data into the system.
If you're comfortable with the cloud, it's a great product. It is very customizable, but error towards keeping your instance as vanilla as possible as over-customization can cause problems too. Does a good job with revenue recognition.
  • No internal IT support needed.
  • No additional IT hardware needed.
  • Accessible anywhere with an internet connection.
  • Pushbutton reporting.
  • Integrations can eliminate duplicate entry.
  • Automates revenue recognition and billing to some degree.
Intacct - NetSuite was more established and had broader functionality.
It works well overall and expect to continue to obtain more efficiencies and automation.

Administrator needs a good blend of accounting expertise and comfort level with cloud based software. I'd also recommend building a relationship with a good third party support vendor that can handle the more complicated issues/changes. Most will have a stable of people well versed in different aspects of the system (financials, sales, integrations, reporting, script writing customizations, etc.). This person usually can take on more duties than just the administrator role and/or could be a controller type if they are "tech savy" enough.
  • Almost all accounting related processes and some contract management.
Quickbooks
  • Vendor implemented
  • Implemented in-house
  • Professional services company
I've worked on 4 implementations in various capacities (NetSuite led, jointly with another third party, and in-house).
As mentioned earlier, make sure your key players dedicate time to the implementation. I would also get several references from vendor on other implementations they have done.
  • Online training
  • Self-taught
Usually use pretty simplistic business cases, but instructors are able to handle more in-depth questions.
Users with a higher level of comfort working in the cloud and have used other accounting packages will do fairly well; users new to the cloud coming from desktop software systems will need more in-depth training.
Yes
This is a tough one as I don't find their support line very helpful usually, but you really need to have some level of support in case of emergency ... I haven't noticed much difference in the quality of response in different support levels in the past.
Many times my issue is not solved and/or I spend an inordinate amount of time re-explaining the issue several times and just get the help guide read back to me. There is a language barrier you have to deal with as well most of the time.
Fairly straightforward interface and can be tailored to user roles to give them only what they need to see. That said, if users are not comfortable with the cloud/internet, it may not be the best solution - all players need to understand it's an internet product and only as good as your internet connections and you will occasionally have minor issues where you may need to re-enter something because of internet quirks (this is VERY minimal in my opinion and doesn't happen any more or less often than quirks with a desktop software like Quick books).
Very good up time ... if there's ever been a problem, it's usually an internet issue on our side affecting all the company's internet (not just NetSuite). I can only remember one or two times in 5 years of using the product that might have been on NetSuite's side. That said, it's sometimes difficult to determine exactly where a problem is or what is causing speed issues that can occasionally crop up.
Seems pretty good most of the time, but have noticed occasional times where it slows down a little. Can be due to other things going on at the company and/or high volumes of transactions being run through the system.
  • Optimo event management software and Ticketmaster.
Optimo is still in-work; Ticketmaster done through imports (high volume of transactions makes this a challenge; will be looking at more automated integration at some point).
  • Ticketmaster - currently done through spreadsheet imports; will look at automating this further at some point.
Yes.
I've seen pricing for several different companies and they all seem to get pretty close to the same number for each of the modules. Ask for discounts. They will give better rates for longer terms. Make sure you really understand if you need a given module - might be best to start without it if you have any question and then see if it stops you from doing what you need to do and/or for a small amount of extra work outside of the system, you can avoid additional recurring charges (i.e., doing an allocation in a spreadsheet and then importing a resulting journal entry vs. paying for a module just for that purpose).
