Datadog and New Relic are very similar tools, the reason our organization stopped using Data Dog was due to high monthly cost for monitoring and observability. New Relic on the other hand provide all the functionalities and is not very heavy on clients' pocket.

The other tools are open-source and requires a lot of customization to set up.

We selected TrackJS for error monitoring and New Relic for site speed monitoring. TrackJS is a much easier to use tool for JS error monitoring, so we never ended up consolidating tools or moving over to New Relic permanently. We use New Relic for site speed monitoring and that's it.

10 years ago we used AppDynamics onpremise but the cost was too high and we migrated to New Relic, more economical and modern

We implemented New Relic before Datadog came into existence and we are very happy. We have not needed to change.
We are now evaluating it to try to reduce New Relic's bill, but I think it is still superior.

Idem with Dynatrace

New Relic is the most full-featured offering that we've found, and is incredibly easy to start using with a PHP app. The New Relic agent is installed as a PHP extension so it is able to monitor and track the performance of any PHP app being run by the web server. Other tools required the installation and setup of a PHP dependency at the application level.

There's nothing like New Relic. pingdom has an APM module but it lacks the detail of New Relic. Datadog's strength is measuring the hosting infrastructure rather than the app itself. Sometime you need APM to see what your app is doing.

Even though Catchpoint is an excellent tool when it comes to synthetics and end-user monitoring, also Amazon CloudWatch is a very good tool for monitoring cloud infrastructure, New Relic gives a complete solution of full-stack monitoring along with the features provided by other tools that help application teams to keep complete track of every component and metrics of their application in one place.

The overlap is not large, but the one advantage of the speed curve is retention: data is available permanently, which allows you to investigate the hypothesis with data collected before formulating the hypothesis. This has proven very effective for us.

We selected New Relic because we were more readily able to send metrics and performance data to one centralized location, and perform a variety of visualization and correlation tasks in a single location, with a single application.

I prefer New Relic over Datadog. I like their dashboard and I'm used to how it works in general. The price for Datadog is lower though, which makes the company consider it from time to time.

  • New Relic's APM is better than Datadog. Has better traces, and dashboards.
  • The Apdex based alerts are accurate and work predictably even at a large scale.
  • New Relic can become expensive as the volume of data ingested grows.
  • Datadog has better dashboards and cross-service maps.
We selected New Relic because of better APM capabilities, and our teams ease of usage.

PRTG and Nagios are decent products themselves; however, when compared to New Relic, they fell short on all fronts. New Relic provided a wide variety of features that the other tools didn't provide. Adding\removing devices in New Relic was quite easy and can be done with a few clicks. It provided a lot of flexibility in terms of configuring what to monitor, when to monitor, and how much to monitor.

New Relic has been DevOps and Developer friendly to onboard and use. Also pricing-wise, it is one of the best in terms of ROI. There are few features better in other APM solutions but New Relic is working on new features faster recently.

  • SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor
New Relic is a SaaS-based tool where the health or sanity checks of the tool have been taken care of by the product team. So the maximum time can be invested in using the tool and making the best use of the feature available in the tool. The flexibility option it provides to create apps inside its ecosystem has also benefitted to run a smooth operation as a whole.

New Relic has a native integration with the IaaS service that the company utilizes which made it very easy to set up, integrate, and it also has consolidated billing with that IaaS service which is a big plus for the organization. After evaluating, I also thought it had the strongest APM capabilities compared to its competition.
