The easiest way to develop and manage workflows in SharePoint
We don't have users that develop their own forms and/or workflows, as mentioned earlier you need a programmers mindset and not every business user can translate his problem/solution to a user friendly form or workflow.
For the development of forms and workflows by business users, I don't think NPP is the right tool.

In my manufacturing site we could train a new form designer in a couple of weeks, and then he went on to automate a 6-step previously paper-based internal process in another few weeks, touching almost all departments at the site. Both the learning and the generation of solutions are incredibly quick, and no IT background is necessary.

would not agree with this statement necessarily. For complex solutions, the loop might be quite long to complete, and for a number of points only a combination of i.e. custom forms, javascript driven inputs etc. are really effective solutions. The more complex the workflow gets, the more it becomes difficult to shorten the cycle.
The end users do not create workflows. Workflows are still created by the IT department. This is a bottleneck. Industrial companies do not have large IT departments or money to pay for a lot of external consultants to create workflows. So the workflow creation process needs to improve. SAAS in the cloud is a good approach, but the pricing should be more friendly. I don't want to pay for each small workflow, it costs a lot of time to calculate the ROI of each workflow, get the approval by the management to be allowed to pay money or time on it to create the next workflow.
