What is Nutanix AHV?

Nutanix AHV is presented as a modern and secure virtualization platform that powers VMs and containers for applications and cloud-native workloads on-premises and in public clouds. Its tools and automated workflows simplify the day-to-day administration of VMs and containers. Open source at its core, Nutanix AHV extends advanced virtualization capabilities to modern hybrid cloud environments. It features a distributed systems core designed for the cloud to solve today’s complex enterprise IT challenges.

Overview

According to Nutanix, the hypervisor is the foundation of modern IT. Virtual Machines (VMs) and containers abstract applications from the underlying hardware so that they can be dynamically provisioned, upgraded, and managed at scale. This paradigm is central across both traditional enterprise IT as well as modern cloud-native applications, but until recently these two delivery models were siloed.

AHV brings these two worlds together, with an open-source foundation extended with advanced enterprise features, and integrated into an HCI framework with built-in storage and networking capabilities for a complete, seamless solution. With simple provisioning and management of VMs, containers, business-critical applications and cloud-native operations and workloads, AHV enables a consistent hybrid cloud operating model across datacenters, the edge, and public clouds.

Enterprise-grade Virtualization Capabilities

  • Ensuring high availability for all workloads - Advanced virtualization features include VM live migration, dynamic scheduling, VM HA, and metro clustering.
  • Highly optimized utilization and performance - Memory overcommit, VM affinity, vNUMA, automated CPU compatibility, AHV turbo and an optimized storage stack.
  • Lifecycle management across the entire stack - Cloud infrastructure upgrades with one click. Start with firmware, and then automate rolling full-stack upgrades.

50/50, not much in it, to be honest. Nutanix AOS wins on the support, training, and certification ease but Dell / EMC has the name and integration support with its other products (e.g., Nutanix not supporting Networkers hot add mode).

By far, in my opinion, Nutanix AOS is heads above VMware. From the creation of a VM to updating the nodes themselves, Nutanix AOS is so much easier, faster, and just an overall better product. I would choose Nutanix AOS over VMware any day.

VMware ESXi has been around much longer and because of this is much more fully featured. However, on the flip side, it then makes Nutanix AOS much less complicated to operate. Nutanix AOS online support (and knowledge base articles) are very well written and comprehensive. The VMware support site is more complicated to navigate.

Nutanix [AOS] is a hyper-converged solution, and in the vSphere it was originally designed for the use of SAN, although they also have a hyper-converged solution. But the architecture and load testing showed the inconsistency of the hyper-converged solution from VMware.

As mentioned before I feel that Nutanix meets or exceeds the capabilities of the competition, where that is in ease of use, how well they support their platform, upgrading software, migrating VM's from another hypervisor to Nutanix or simply moving VM's between one Nutanix cluster to another cluster, the performance and support has always been great.

There are other clustering solutions, to be sure. And there are significantly less expensive solutions for preventing downtime, such as Hyper-V replication, which is what I was using before Nutanix. But Nutanix is in the upper-right of the Gartner magic quadrant for hyperconverged solutions. If you want an all-in-one solution that comes highly rated by industry experts, it can be a great way to go. It was also selected because several peers had selected it and had good experiences. I've used Hyper-V (which you can run on Nutanix instead of AHV, by the way, although you lose many of the cool features AHV offers) and VMware (which you could also run on Nutanix), I have not found myself wholly missing either of those products by using AHV.

Our experience was good with VMware, but much more and on another level with Nutanix.

For more than 8 years we were VMware ESXi and vCenter users and we were satisfied, but it required a more detailed administration that was time-consuming. The management of all resources was solid and worked without problems, but that was the limit. We could not fail to continuously manage everything.

With Nutanix things changed drastically, since we managed to automate and avoid worrying about things that were previously tedious. The critical comparison in all of this was the management of storage. vSAN, in comparison with Nutanix AOS, falls far behind, both in administration and in performance.

We looked at both Simplivity and Cisco HyperFlex. Both are pretty good in their own right. Simplivity was very 'efficient' in the way they handled data, but we didn't like the idea of a propitiatory hardware card. Cisco's HyperFlex was our second choice, but we were so impressed with what Nutanix had done for us already, that we were already leaning toward that.
