We are using Nutanix AOS as our current HCI. We have recently been phasing out older HP/Dell hardware to be replaced with Nutanix Nodes. On these nodes, we are running virtual servers and virtual desktops to support the mission and users/students of the Naval War College. This gives us the flexibility to expand with increasing demand and provide end-users with remote capability.
  • Cluster management
  • One-click upgrades
  • Single pane of glass
Cons
  • Third party driver support for one-click upgrades (example: NVIDIA GRID Drivers).
  • Specific metrics available from within Prism (Example: total IOPS capable not just what has been used).
  • New games (2048 is getting old).
Nutanix has been excellent in every way replacing existing hardware and infrastructure use cases.
  • Flexibility.
  • Setup a great road map for future use and expansion.
Nutanix support has gone out of its way to make trips to us on-site to provide extra training as per our request for day to day troubleshooting and identifying new better ways to learn the environment.

Nutanix was easy from day one. It was easy to set up, easy to learn. We received the initial setup from support. Since the initial setup, any additional hardware/services we have set up on our own in multiple environments. This was fun and easy and very rewarding.
No noticeable change, other than getting us back to the use of shared storage to take advantage of VMotion capability.
I have never used any other HCI like products

Change management was a big part of the implementation and was well-handled
  • Device discovery and switch configuration
  • IPv6 Support
IPv6 is needed for link local discovery. We do not have IPv6 configured on our network so the easiest way to get our nodes configured and discovered by foundation was to configure the IPv4 addressing within the node prior to trying to discover with foundation.

We requested more training than typical which was very in depth
The online training was sufficient to get up and running.

Nutanix AOS used across the whole organization. We are using it to solve a lot of different business problems from VDI to database.
  • Perfect Support
  • Easy to use
  • All in one package
Cons
  • Improve interface. Add more features.
I give Nutanix AOS an eight because nothing is perfect, and there is a lot of improvements that can be made.
  • Centralized management
  • All in one box
Best support I've ever seen
  • Product Features
  • Product Usability
  • Vendor Reputation
Perfect technical support!
It's easy to use and easy to learn. You don't need a lot of knowledge in different segments (san\network\storage)
It's working well, but very rarely do we have performance issues.
  • Red Hat Virtualization (RHV) (formerly RHEV)
Nutanix AOS easy to use, easy to deploy.
Veeam Availability Suite, Veritas NetBackup, Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery
  • Online training
A lot of online training courses, most of them are free.
  • Update with LCM
  • Expand cluster
  • Automation
  • Kubernetes with Karbon
  • Easy to use, but you need to understand HCI concepts
Nutanix adds a lot of new features with every new release, but there are still a lot of new ways to improve. For example simple inter-cluster live migration without any protection policies and so on.

Nutanix AOS is awesome

We are using Nutanix AOS to host all our application servers, network applications, hosting servers and database.
  • Easy to manage.
  • Simple dashboard.
  • Hyper-converged.
Cons
  • Support mobile version.
Nutanix is well suited for:
- operating multiple servers when accessing remotely.
- backup/replicate/restore.

Less suited:
- can't export the VM.
  • Positive - Unlimited to create or deploy VM.
  • Positive - Cost of data center operation can be reduced. No more up and running separate physical servers.
  • Negative - 1st time investment, the price is quite high.
Fast response when logging a report.

It was easy to learn. Yes, we received training.
Migration from traditional topology to hyper-converged. The speed and performance during deployment and using the apps is much better and superb.
Unlimited VM without extra licensing. The AOS is based on KVM.
