Open Dental [Software] is a vital tool to our office and we use it to handle every aspect of our patient care. It's convenient in that it allows us to combine staff and patient schedules with patient records, billing and personal information. At the front desk, we can view patient account balances/payments, upcoming procedures, x-rays and provider notes, which allows us to quickly answer patient questions and provide excellent customer service. Open Dental's customer service is excellent and provides support that allows us to customize the software to our individual practice's needs.
  • Provider scheduling
  • Billing
  • Customer support
  • Internal reports
  • Open Dental [Software] has issues when users try to open more than one window at a time.
  • There is no way to copy/paste provider schedules, so you have to schedule each day individually.
Open Dental [Software] is well suited to a practice that is willing to put time into customizing it to their needs. Since it is open-source software, it's not completely ready to use right out of the box, but comes with flexibility that other dental software lack. As such, you can make it work for whatever you need for your individual practice. If you're not super tech-savvy, they have a team that will help you with these customizations at a reasonable cost.
  • Affordability
  • Great customer service
  • Ease of use
  • Streamlining billing, scheduling, and record keeping into one program makes it easier to onboard new staff as they only have to learn to use one software.
  • Having reports available in Open Dental [Software] make it easy to track insurance claims, income, and provider performance.

Open Dental [Software] combines scheduling, billing, and patient records into one software, so everyone in the practice uses Open Dental [Software] from the front desk to the dental assistants to the doctors themselves.
Open Dental's customer service team provides all of the support necessary. If there is something that we want the software to do, we just reach out and they assist us in setting up that function. Open Dental [Software] also works with our IT/security provider so that we do not have to hire an in-house tech person to keep the tech side up and running.

  • Insurance claim tracking

Our practice functions well using Open Dental [Software] and it's a very affordable option. So long as the customer service remains excellent and the price stays competitive, we have no reason to go through the hassle of changing software.

Open Dental's customer support team has gone above and beyond for us. There was a 2-3 month period where we couldn't go more than 5 minutes without the software crashing - which was an issue with our server and not with their product. Despite it being our issue, the customer service team remained in constant contact with us and with our IT support company until the issue was resolved.
We have used Open Dental's advanced support options in the past to generate code for custom support and to enable patients to fill out their new patient forms through our website. Each time we have used it, the fee has been well worth it and the support has been excellent.
Open Dental [Software] works great....until you try to open multiple windows. This is the one feature that needs serious improvement with the product. I've had to force quit/terminate the software more times than I can count because it froze when I tried to open up a second window to complete a task. Other than this one issue, it's a very usable product.

Open Dental is being used as our primary office management software. It allows us to keep track of patient information, pending treatment, medical and dental history, etc. It also integrates with other software we use, such as Flex Dental and our radiology software, which increases its versatility in management of patients. Open Dental has provided a wide range of services at a reasonable price.
  • 3rd party software integration
  • patient management
  • scheduling
  • insurance verification input
  • Can be a little clunky to use, but improvements are being made all the time.
Open Dental is becoming the primary dental software for a lot of dentists by providing affordable pricing, yet still powerful enough to cover most of the needs of a standard dental office. It has good scalability and real-time updating, allowing staff to work on the same chart on multiple workstations. If there is something Open Dental DOESN'T do, it usually provides strong integration with 3rd party software to increase functionality.
  • patient scheduling
  • digital charting
  • software integration
  • constant updates
  • positive ROI due to smoother operations of our clinic
  • decreased overhead
  • good scalability with a busier patient schedule

We are an IT company that supports dental practices, and Open Dental is one of the practice management softwares that we support. Open Dental is incredibly easy to support and set up, and works very fast on even older PCs. It's open infrastructure allows third party plug-in creators to make pretty much anything that a dentist may need to integrate with their practice management system. The price is great as well. The interface is easy to learn, with a very low learning curve for new users. Open Dental is an easy recommendation, having worked with all major dental practice management softwares.
  • User Interface is simple to learn
  • Integrates well with all imaging programs
  • Support techs are amazing, and remember your name when you call
  • It's cheaper than almost all alternatives, but the value is higher
  • Lots of plug-ins are available
  • Awesome user community of dentists that love to talk about how they've incorporated plug-ins and other features
  • Lots of reports to choose from, or you can make your own
  • There are a few AR reports that would be nice to have as a template, so you don't have to make it on your own
Open Dental is suited for any dental practice, even with older equipment. It works great with XDR for imaging, but also will integrate with any other imaging on the market. Open Dental's appointment layout is easy to navigate, and you can get into charts with just a click. Employees who are learning the software have it easy compared to some of the other alternatives.
  • The cost of Open Dental is minimal, so ROI is huge.
  • Dentrix, EagleSoft and CS SoftDent Software
Open Dental is faster than the alternatives, and the support is much better with very low hold times. It's more customizable with lots of plug-ins available, although they aren't really needed. A strong user community group is available as well, where you can see different use cases and read up on experiences of other users of the software.
