OpenToonz is a software designed for the production of 2D animation. It is intended for companies of all sizes, including small independent studios and large animation production houses. According to the vendor, OpenToonz is used by professionals and industries such as animation studios, film and television production companies, advertising and marketing agencies, educational institutions, and independent animators to create animated content for commercial and non-commercial projects.

## Key Features

**GTS Scanning Tool**: Developed by Studio Ghibli, the GTS scanning tool specializes in animation scanning and allows for efficient sequence number scanning. It supports various scanning types and settings that can be easily saved for future use.

**Digital Painting**: OpenToonz supports anti-aliased lines for smooth and high-quality digital painting. The data of paintings is independent of the palette, making it easy to work with provisional colors.

**Filming**: OpenToonz provides both an xsheet and a timeline interface, offering flexibility in animation production. Effects can be synthesized easily using the GUI and the node tree. Real-scale considerations and additional effects through plug-ins enhance the filming capabilities.

**Raster and Vector Image Compatibility**: OpenToonz is compatible with both raster and vector images, allowing for versatile usage in various types of animation projects.

**Interconversion of Image Formats**: OpenToonz enables the seamless interconversion between colored binarized TGA sequence images and the OpenToonz format, ensuring compatibility with existing workflows.

**Effects Development Kit (SDK)**: OpenToonz provides an Effects Development Kit (SDK) that allows users to develop plug-in effects for image processing. Researchers can receive feedback by developing and releasing their outcomes as plug-in effects.

**Effects**: OpenToonz offers a range of effects developed by Dwango's machine learning research and development team. These effects include automatic picture style changes using deep learning technology and the production of affected incident light similar to classic works before the digitization of the production environment. Other effects include wavy distortion for creative visual effects.

Based on the software "Toonz", developed by Digital Video S.p.A. in Italy, OpenToonz has been customized by Studio Ghibli, and used for the creation of its works for many years. Dwango launched the OpenToonz project in cooperation with Digital Video and Studio Ghibli. It is available free and  open source under a BSD license.

MAGIX Software headquartered in Berlin offers the VEGAS Pro line of video editing applications  which combines the company's Sound Forge audio editing suite and a wide range of movie production features and effects.
