Oracle Autonomous Database was implemented as part of a proof of concept to simplify database creation and administration, enabling a quick way to deploy new instances without the need for highly trained database administrators in our development environments. Provisioning a new environment, having it disabled when it was not in use, and re-enabled as soon as it was required was one of the advantages we wanted to test.
  • Quick and automated provisioning
  • Automatic scaling
  • Automatic backup
  • Automatic upgrade/patching if required
  • Robust and reliable
  • Importing data from external sources can be simplified (it has been in the latest releases)
  • Cost
We found it extremely recommendable for development and testing environments. It is really simple and quick to create and provision new instances as required, stop them while they are not used, and re-start them when required. Specific environments (like stress tests, compliance, performance testing) can be created and eliminated once they are not required without requiring a system administrator or a database administrator.

  • Easy to set up and provision environments, allowing our development teams to quickly start working on new projects or specific tasks that require new databases
  • Ability to quickly scale up and down based on demand.
  • Most tedious database administration tasks are automated.
Actually, we used both Oracle Autonomous Database for our Oracle-related environments and Azure SQL and Azure VMs hosting SQL Server for our SQL Server-related environments. We have different products, some of them are platform independent (can be deployed on Oracle, SQL Server, or some other DBs engines) but some of them are platform-specific, so we work with different databases and platforms.

Software Developers and Software Testers, in order to develop and test the applications we develop. Senior developers and architects also work on UAT/Stress Test/Performance Test environments for limited and specific periods of time and we are able to provision those environments in a simpler way without requiring the help of a database administrators team.

I was the person responsible for managing the Autonomous Databases. I have a database administrator background (more than 15 years) and I was in charge of the database practice (from architecture to production support).
  • It can quickly provision development and testing environments.
  • It provides the ability to restore / recreate environments without a database administrators team involved.
Because it does exactly what we need: it enables us to manage our development and testing database environments in a quick and simple way without requiring support from a database administrators team.
The product is continuously evolving and new features are added frequently. Management options through the OCI (Oracle Cloud Infrastructure) console and through the command line and API are being enhanced frequently.
  • Database provision
  • Backup (no action required!)
Yes, but I don't use it

It is used by our organisation and we have also implemented it for our customers. It is the next generation automated aspect of creating and managing things. From setup to operation, patching and performing tuning , the whole gamut of administration is automated thereby making it a robust DB system.
  • It is purely autonomous.
  • All maintenance tasks are taken care of by Oracle.
  • Better performance.
  • System is robust and resides on Exadata platform.
  • Monitoring console is also provided. Least intrusive by an external DBA.
  • Different modes of connections are available - high, medium, low, TP, TP Urgent, making it easier to select the connection service to the DB and making for optimum use of resources.
  • Autonomous DB integration with PeopleSoft. Issues noticed in the application.
  • More flexibility of user access to DB OS.
  • External connections using DB link is not possible .
  • Appears sophisticated as a majority of the controls reside with Oracle in terms of security, patching, maintenance, tuning. Less responsibility to a proficient DBA.
Oracle is easy to use and not many resources are required. The base version is available free.

  • It's robust.
  • Initial cost of implementation is low, however long-term cost of usage is high.
  • Ease of use.
  • Machine Learning capabilities included making value addition to the product.
Latest DB with automated features like self-driving cars.
5
The database layer of critical applications. It forms the core of the application which are performance dependent. A robust database with high performance enhances application utilization.

Knowledge of Oracle Infrastructure, ADW and ATP is very essential for using this software.
  • POC to end user to build applications on the fly without much investment in DB design and functionality.
  • Integrating the ADW with OAC.
  • Using ATP for Transaction Processing systems.
  • Used for POC for OACS. Integrated different sources of data into 1 centralized location.
  • Improvise on the current product and help customer towards ADW tool.
Autonomous is the way of the future and this is one system which is crucial to any system and is also autonomous.
It is self-tuning and self-maintaining which are major advantages.
