Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) is used to integrate applications, bulk data movement and of course to load a data warehouse environment.

ODI helped me to reduce a slowly changing dimension type 2 with the same output, from 22,000 seconds to 168 seconds. [I] Manage to load 10.000+ files to a table from 1000+ different sources under 20 minutes with approximate 300 GB of data per day.

  • ODI is a tool that can talk or learn how to talk, with any database or operating system in its own language, this is the power of ODI!
  • I managed to connect to an Ingress Database, within 3 days of time (it is not supported out of the box).
  • When a new version of source and/or target database supports new data types, it takes my 5 minutes to implement it into ODI and immediately start using it.
  • Flexibility, ease of customization, extensive features, ease of deployment, and the ability to access to all kinds of different source system technologies. No need for extra hardware for transformation step.
  • Easy to learn & develop. It takes your 3 days to learn ODI and be an "intermediate ODI Developer", if you know how to write SQL.
  • Big data connectors are implemented since ODI 11.1.1.7 (out-of-the-box) and upper version that support many well-known Big Data architecture.
  • Knowledge Module architecture helps you to build your data integration activities with less effort.
  • They need to work on the multiuser development environment and include the ability to comply with different kinds of SDLCs.
  • You can switch to source, staging area or target to improve your querying performance. If you have to do a join from different source systems, you can decide which data to move to where and figure out the place for best output.
  • Variables can help you to perform loops and conditional statements in packages for helping ETL. What else do you need?
  • It helped me to reduce a slowly changing dimensions type 2 with the same output, from 22,000 seconds to 168 seconds.
  • Loaded 10.000+ files to a table from 1000+ different sources under 20 minutes with approximate 300GB of data per day.

  • It made a tremendous job, all the developers across the organisation learnt ODI rapidly and started to develop. ODI became the strategic ETL tool and data integration tool for my company.
Because of variety of my projects that I involved, I used nearly all the world wide known tools within data warehouse environment.

  • BI Tools: OBIEE, Cognos, Microstrategy, Business Objects, Qlikview, Tableau.
  • ETL Tools: ODI, OWB, IBM Data Stage, SAP Data Services, Informatica, Microsoft SSIS, Pentaho, Talend.

Its been used as part of the Integration team. The tool is used to move data between any two systems. It helps moving large volumes of data among systems in batch mode.
  • You need not worry about technology, it basically supports anything under the sun which has a JDBC or ODBC driver.
  • Has enough key metrics (KMs) that come with the tool, that we can change and customize it as required to the organization.
  • It supports batch loads to most databases which improves time and efficiency.
  • Its not like other ETL tools where it resides on its own world. The transformations happen on the either the source or target and we can use what best suits the technology we are working on.
  • It does not have all bells and whistles. Needs more integration with Mainframe.
  • Currently it does not have any KMs that load binary files in batch mode to any database.
  • There can be lot of change to the UI, which are normal stuff.
It is best suited for large volumes of data in batch mode.
  • Oracle support is not productive when it comes to ODI
  • Getting resources is a pain
  • Quick turn around time in building code
It is maturing and over time will have a good pool of resources. Each new version has addressed the issues of the previous ones. Its getting better and bigger.

ODI is used in our team to deliver Data warehouse reporting data.
  • ELT functionality to improve the performance of the data load
  • Able to work with different rdbms and file structures without any issue.
  • Adaptability to learning the tool and implementing the projects required by the company.
  • The GUI or ODI studio has Garbage Collector problems like freezing up if used for a long time without closing the studio.
  • ODI 12c has got it, but 11g has a restriction in terms of loading data into multiple targets in the same interface.
The whole knowledge of how ODI works and what customizations can be done using ODI's key metrics. Some key questions to ask are:
Which objects do what in ODI?
How are objects migrated between different environments?
How are agents set up and what are their uses? How do you schedule scenarios?
What different types repositories does ODI use?
  • ODI is a low money tool compared to other ETL tools in the market.
  • Over all product development becomes efficient as a result of these low cost tools.
IBM Infosphere, Informatica. I worked on the mentioned tools as well as ODI. I liked ODI because it is easy to use with great features that every other ETL tool has in the market.
The only reason for this rating is I guess the usability of the tool .

Oracle Data Integrator was used to pull the Oracle BPM data into data mart. It was being used across the whole organization. It pulled the data from various sources and pushed it to a single source with very complex transformations. Master and incremental data was being loaded into the data warehouse.
  • Incremental data loads
  • Complex Transformations
  • Detailed documentation of LKM/IKM
  • Troubleshooting of failed jobs
  • More user friendly interface
  • Hierarchy flattening transformations
  • Integration issues with SAP HANA
For simple transformation and small business it is very good ELT tool but if you look for the big business and the complex transformation it has gaps to fill for example Hierarchy flattening jobs or multi language translation jobs etc. will make this tool good to use in big organizations.
  • LKM/IKL customization is complex
  • Processing speed issues in complex transformations
  • Easy troubleshooting
Our organization was using the Oracle BPM and the Oracle Data Integrator has good integration with BPM. We got good support from Oracle in setting up the integrated environment.
ODI is very good tool for the small business and less complex transformation but when I have a big client and their requirement is complex then chances are that I would recommend Informatica instead of ODI.
