- In memory feature - very fast. Earlier queries used to run in fetching data used to take time now it is very fast. We can even select which table should be used in the memory feature. So complex and big tables are utilized properly.
- Restore and Point of Time Recovery - In my entire career of 10 years, Oracle Database has been the most consistent and reliable database. The RMAN backup concept is the best example. If any disaster happens in another database, there is a chance of loss of data or getting corrupted but Oracle is best.
- Oracle Database restoration and recovery is complex. RMAN backup recovery has quite a lot of steps and is complex. In other databases, it is very much simplified.
- Oracle user extend validity - this is tricky as users are assigned to profiles and if you want to extend the validity of a particular user, it becomes difficult. That is where it can be improved.
- Some customers are using the Oracle Database standard version. In the standard version, some features are limited, but it is still working well. So from a license/cost perspective, even if we use a version with limited features, it is very robust and consistent.
- Totally worth the investment. Oracle Database is the best database.
- Several application uses and compatibility
- We have an RAC environment along with ASM - active-passive servers so it will also work like HA/DR. It is possible with Oracle Database.
- Oracle Cloud functionality - we are still exploring.
Oracle database version with wonderful features and user friendly which helps to overcome limitations of older versions
1) OEM 12C ,using which I can monitor heterogeneous databases along with Oracle databases, host monitoring, creation of groups, One link for OEM administration whereas in older versions we used to have one OEM link per server and it is really difficult to manage OEM links in huge database server enviornment. 2) Multitenant database 3) Recover table using Rman 4) Full database caching. 5) In 12C we can move data files online. Whereas in prior database versions we had to offline of shutdown the database in order to move data files depending on type of tablespace. 6) Single node RAC, Flex ASM, Flex cluster and many more features.
I had great experience working on Oracle 12C and I highly recommend using 12C as it helps you to secure your database in many ways and gives you wonderful features hence allows easy administration.
- OEM 12C allows cloud monitoring. We can install OEM on one server and monitor all my databases (11G R2 and above) hence I need to manage just one link. It also allows heterogeneous database monitoring, host monitoring, out offline patching.
- We do not have an option to recover tables from Rman backup prior to 12C hence we had to be only depending on logical backups.
- But using 12C database we can recover tables as well.
- When we look for availability RAC comes to our mind and Oracle Database 12C came up with new features related to ASM and RAC like Flex cluster and Flex ASM using which if at all ASM instance goes down in a RAC node it can make use of asm that is running in other node hence ensuring availability. In Flex cluster we need to have Flex asm and the leaf nodes. There will be no database/ASM instances running in leaf nodes but only the application servers. The incoming connection come to leaf node and then to the actual hub server. Leaf nodes reduce the cost as there is no need for internode communication between leaf nodes. The internode connection should be there within hub nodes.
- I don't see any such disadvantages but the multitenant structure seems bit complicated and same should be presented in simpler manner
- Oracle Database 12C had just positive impact on our overall business objectives as we could make full use of Flex cluster, Flex ASM and it saved our transactions during node failure.
- We have installed OEM 12C in one server using which we monitor Oracle 11g, 12C databases and we monitor hosts and goldengate which has eased the server administration
- We used flex asm feature of Oracle 12c which helped us to achive high availability
- We recovered table using Rman as there was a table dropped in production
- We created CDB and PDB's for all databases which simplifies administration of databases
- We have been able to recover tables using rman backup which was not available in prior versions
- We have enabled full db caching which gives good performance
- We create multiple indexes on columns which is very helpful in achieving good performance
- We are still in process of upgrading some of our databases from 11g to 12C and once we are done with all upgradation, we will be able to include all our databases under multitenant architecture

- We did not face any such issues and it was smooth installation. The up gradation from 11G to 12C also was smooth as 12C provides parallel option to upgrade which makes the medatadata upgrade faster

- Implementing Flex cluster and flex asm is quite challenging
- Easy to monitor databases using OEM 12C and performing out off line patching reduces downtime while patching
- I don't see many things in this category but CDB /PDM administration could be challenging
- The Oracle optimizer is getting smarter in every Oracle release. In 12c, the adaptive query optimization features helped a lot to improve query performance.
- In 12c, we can restore a single table from RMAN backups - it's a very useful and time-saving feature when we need to recover a particular software module.
- I see the scope of improving the optimizer capabilities to automatically handle run-away queries better, meaning, if a SQL suddenly comes up with a bad execution plan, the database needs to be able to handle it smoothly, rather than affecting other SQL.
- Oracle database 12c is very stable, it reduced a lot of downtime for us, thus we have a greater ROI.
- It is the main production Transactional Database for web-based applications
- It is the underlying Data Warehouse Database for Business Intelligence applications
- It helps us to scale the software product and services at ease with a lower operational and management cost
- We did not have to do any tweak to use 12c databases, all the features behaving according to the expectations. We are taking advantages of advanced compressions which reduced our storage usage about 40% and with greater performance.

- We hit a problem during the upgrade process, the halfway through the upgrade caused error, then it was resolved with the help of Oracle Support.

- Oracle has gotten better with streamlining installation. Oracle Database 12c is much easier to install and configure than previous releases of Oracle software.
- Oracle Database 12c is a robust platform for mission critical applications. We use the RAC (Real Application Clusters) edition of Oracle Database 12c. This allows us to spread workload across multiple servers and provides fault tolerance. If one node goes down, all systems remain operational.
- Oracle Database 12c includes RMan backup. This has been improved so that it is easy to backup the database without down time and to recover should any failures occur.
- Oracle Database 12c is able to handle large quantities of data with extremely good performance. My organization happens to be the largest user of the ERP software that we run, and it is able to handle tables with millions of rows.
- One of the hardest things about dealing with Oracle Database 12c is the optimizer. They have made many improvements to it, but in 12c they came out with some initialization parameters that were not well documented. Some of these were set to default when we upgraded to the 12c release. Initially this made some software modules perform slower than they had before. It took us quite a bit of work to learn how to set everything so that we had better performance than we had in Oracle Database 11. We had to open several support calls with Oracle to get performance issues resolved. This could be improved if they added more documentation in this area.
- Another issue in dealing with Oracle database 12c is cost. Educational institutions have more limited budgets and each additional licensed option costs additional money. Names of some options are changed and it is hard to determine what you need and how to purchase options in the most cost effective manner.
- Oracle has a large international support network when companies have problems with their software. There are vast amounts of online resources in their knowledge base. However, it is often difficult to sort through the irrelevant articles or unanswered questions. It would be nice if they made it easier to find information limited to the version you are on, or only show questions that have been answered.
- Oracle Database 12c allows us to have a smaller IT department than many other organizations. There are tools associated with it such as Oracle Enterprise Manager that allow us to automate administrative tasks and alert us when there are problems which frees us up to do other more important tasks.
- It has also allowed us to continue having good throughput of transactions. When registration opens for each new term, our systems are slammed with students logging on. In the past students would have to wait in line to get registered, sometimes waiting for hours. Improved performance with better releases of Oracle Database as well as streamlined hardware have eliminated this.
- Oracle works with all of its customers, especially educational institutions to work out pricing so that you can get what you really need. Even though they are pricey, if you are willing to meet with them, they will work with you to help you determine which options are most suited to meeting your business goals. They aren't just trying to sell software at all costs.
We have used Microsoft SQL Server for some smaller projects where the vendor only supports that environment. But whenever there is a choice, we use Oracle Database 12c. Students access our systems at all hours of the day and night. Therefore we must be operational 24x7. Oracle's RAC evironment is a true cluster system. Microsoft SQL Server clustering does not allow the same fault tolerance, always up environment that we need.
PostgreSQL is freeware. Because of that we do not feel like it is appropriate for large mission critical applications. There is no vendor to call for direct support, although some companies do sell support services. Patches, such as security fixes are not released on a regular basis.
- Registration is a critical process for a college. This is our benchmark use case for performance.
- Processing of financial aid is highly regulated by the federal government. The ability to get updates on a timely basis as the laws change is critical. In addition the federal government can impose penalties on an institution if financial aid processing is not handled timely.
- Processing of payroll is another critical area. We have all different types of employees so this is another area that is always highly tested.
- We make use of add-on Oracle Database 12c products such as Oracle GoldenGate to mine data from our in-house database and turn it into a data warehouse. We are able to use this data to predict student success and have early intervention programs that reach out to at risk students.
- We have many different little applications that are housed in smaller departments. We are considering pulling all of that data into our data warehouse for more integrated reporting.
