The interface is easy to use. I manage multiple DNS zones and getting into the zone for editing is easy. There are some situations where you have to toggle between the expert editor and the standard editor. Depending on what you are doing, it can be confusing which editor to use, but it is always available there.

Coming in as someone who has never managed DNS before I can say that it makes it very easy for someone to come in and figure out at least the bare bones of it. It is very user friendly and I think I could teach someone how to use it in less than 10 minutes.

The interface is geared toward skilled sysadmins and engineers which keeps the clutter down and keeps the actions in logical places. I also appreciate the Publish feature so that any changes can be simply and categorically reviewed prior to pushing out to the global DNS. This built-in fail safe has made a difference when updating mission critical records.

This is the only real gripe we have with Dyn; their web-UI can be remarkably painful to use.

In the "simple" editor, DNS records are arranged in a kind of "node" view, where each record is a node and any records of the same name or longer (i.e. all records called "record.example.com" or "other.record.example.com") fall under it. This creates an odd sort of hierarchical view that's not really representative of the zone file.

The "expert" editor doesn't have an actual delete button, just a checkbox. If you want to update conflicting record types (for example, replacing an A record with a CNAME) you have to check the box for the record being deleted, save changes, create the new record, save changes, and finally publish changes.

Dyn uses a publish model for changes, where all changes you make are staged and can be reverted or published all at once. This is fine, except that the publish/revert dialog is in a different page. This is nice when you have many changes, but very annoying when you're changing just one or two records across multiple zones.

These are relatively minor issues in an otherwise good platform; annoyances more than deal breakers.

I give Oracle Dyn Managed DNS a 10 because the API is easy to use and there are libraries available which increase usability dramatically. The UI is functional (after some getting used to) but as a Software Engineer I drive my automation through the API.

The interface can be simple for those that are new to managing DNS, or you can switch to the advanced interface. You have the ability to create just about any record you need to from either, though some are better created in basic and others in advanced. Ability to create SRV records using a simple wizard is also available.
