Oracle GoldenGate

Oracle is tightly integrated with Oracle Exadata and is a better fit for using Oracle databases.Both products support heterogeneous databases but using Exadata, it just seemed to make better sense to use the Oracle GoldenGate product. We also take advantage of the Oracle GoldenGate Veridata product to compare datasets and make sure they are still in sync.

We use Oracle Data Guard as a backup tool, but not for data replication. Data Guard is not suited for real-time data replication in our non-normalized reporting database nor for the database we are using for our upgrade project, as Data Guard is not able to transform data and is not able to synchronize data into different schemas, which is necessary for our project. Additionally, our project database is on Oracle 12g not 11i: I am not 100% sure Data Guard is able to replicate from 11i to 12g.

We evaluated Data Guard since we were in the market for replication during disaster and recovery. [Oracle] GoldenGate has much more features besides what we indented to use it for and has helped us with different ways to present our application to our clients.

They are system-limited. Oracle GoldenGate provides more flexibility to use in different use cases and topologies. Most of the other tools are not matured like the Oracle GoldenGate. Oracle GoldenGate is best compared to other tools in terms of high performance, configuration and management, support for the cloud environment, and integration with complex databases.

Oracle GoldenGate is a data integration and virtualization management solution for all businesses. It offers real time data integration and replication services for IT management. We liked Oracle pricing model since we already have a working relationship with them. Training was also essential in getting the application on-boarded, and Oracle provides a vast amount of material.

Oracle GoldenGate is the preferred solution for streamlining cross-platform data replication; with Autonomous Database, Data Pump import and export can provide similar results but are less robust and require much more customization. Data Pump does provide a great degree of ease of use as it is fully integrated with the Oracle database product whereas Oracle GoldenGate is its own standalone tool.

I haven't used any other products like Oracle GoldenGate.

It is easier to replicate our main database to backup system at cloud services.

GoldenGate had a lower pricepoint than competitors.

Far superior.

It wasn't easy to set up replication to a message queue using SharePlex. We had challenges using the product when the application was doing a lot of "rollbacks to savepoint". SharePlex always showed a lag.
When I was testing SharePlex, there was no way to offload the workload from the DB server while using it.

We did an extensive POC a few years ago for a very large environment. GoldenGate's performance blew away all other options.

This is the best replication tool out there.

Streams is more complex to manage and have its limitations. Also it is deprecated by Oracle.

We have only looked at custom solutions.

We evaluated SQData, Dell Shareplex and some other replication software. OGG was our choice for breadth of services and wide range of RDBMS and Big Data solutions it supports.

Oracle GoldenGate stacks up best for easy data upgradation and migration with zero downtime.

We used the SharePlex replication product about 6 years ago. It had limited functionalities, was not able to fulfill our needs.

SharePlex offers a cheaper alternative and is sometimes faster performing as well for simpler replication needs, but Oracle GoldenGate comes with tonnes of features that I have not seen in any other competing technology. OGG offers real time flat file generation, integration with Java Systems, integration with Big Data and Cloud. OGG also has awesome GUI tools for monitoring and validation. It supports multiple database types and replication topologies.

I don't believe that there is a product that can match the capabilities of Oracle GoldenGate. As I stated earlier, it has so many use cases because of the ability of the product to handle the logical transformation of data from source to target. It can be used for DR but that is not the most useful feature as data guard do this much cheaper. Creation of data warehouses and reporting databases are a major strength of the product.

We switched from SharePlex of Quest Software because of licensing costs.

Oracle GoldenGate was the obvious choice for us since we already had an entire Oracle ERP suite implemented at our university.
