Oracle GoldenGate is database management software for data integration, and availability support for heterogeneous databases.https://media.trustradius.com/product-logos/n1/v4/CS0IROR5I1QE.PNGOracle Golden Gate implementation at courier servicesWe use it for our core system to support our main database for courier services. The core system is used by all of the operations and sales teams, as well as the Board of Directors. All of the transactions should be backed up and maintained in our backup servers as well as our disaster recovery. We use GoldenGate to replicate our database.,Oracle GoldenGate has been able to replicate all of our data in different servers and locations. It also supports large databases It supports a high volume of daily transactions of our sales.,In certain cases, we consider how well GoldenGate is able to help us interconnect our main database directly to our backup system (we use actifio for it). We have some difficulties to cut-off our size of main database, so maybe Oracle GoldenGate could make it easier by providing a function to shrink our data safely. We also interconnected with our partners to share some data, specific and limited fields only, through third party services, using messaging system (ISO 8583, XML and JSON). It would be great if GoldenGate also provided such a function.,8,It make it easier to manage and back up our main database GoldenGate helps make it faster in terms of solving technical problems related to preparing inter-department reports. It helps us be more efficient in terms of using manpower to handle our database,Oracle Database Cloud Service,In-house Partner-led,Pinnet (Indonesian company),7Sr. Database EngineerWe have multiple data centers and all of them share the same copy of DB. We use GoldenGate to do cross datacenters replication for Oracle and My SQL DBs as an HA solution. As our DBs are one of the busiest in the world and have a very tight SLA for replication lag which we can achieve by GoldenGate. We have explored few other products like shareplex but GG done the work for us. GoldenGate is a de-facto standard for replication in our organization.,GoldenGate is tightly integrated with Oracle databases and supports all features like encryption, LOBs, compressions etc. GoldenGate is very flexible, you can customize it as per your requirement. Whether it is high transaction DB or a DR site, it can work anywhere. We can dump data in multiple formats with big data adaptor like kafka, hdfs, xml etc. We can achieve high throughput by splitting extracts and replicats. Also from integrated capture and replication it is so smart that it spawn parallel process based on the load. Goldengate is very useful in cross platform migration.,Memory consumption of extract is exponentially high, sometimes extract restart consumes so much memory that it impact the current application connections. There are so many bugs in the system for dumping data via xml or other format like hdfs. Data corruption is so frequent that we wrote our own scripts to detect and repair xml corruption. As always we didn't get proper support from Oracle on this issue. For active-active replication on busy systems, online DDL change can sometimes cause data discrepancy. With integrated capture creating index on big table is a headache even thought you are creating with via gg user. Extract starts get lagging even after skipping the DDL by gg user in param file. This was not the case with classic capture.,8,GoldenGate is really helpful is providing HA solution where we can sync data between data centers and distribute load between them. In case of a site down we can redirect all connections to surviving DC. Most of the time the delay of Oracle GoldenGate replication is within seconds. We can do database upgrade without interrupting site availability.,SharePlex and Microsoft SQL Server,In-house,Oracle Database 12c, Apache Kafka, Hadoop,YesGreat Replication Solution for Heterogeneous database solutions. We have been using Oracle GoldenGate (OGG) for our replication needs. We have a mix of database environments including Oracle, DB2 and Microsoft SQL Server. We use Oracle GoldenGate to replicate across the mix of these different RDBMS. OGG is reliable, fast, has high throughput and allows heterogeneous replication. We also use OGG Management Pack which is an extra license cost and includes Oracle GoldenGate Monitor, Oracle GoldenGate Director and Oracle GoldenGate Veridata.,Supports both homogeneous and heterogeneous replications. Supports DDL replication if both source and target databases are Oracle. Supports multiple replication topology such as unidirectional, bi-directional, cascading, peer to peer and multicasting. Can interface with JMS and Big Data Systems.,Like most Oracle products, it is quite expensive. Too many tables in single replication channels creates performance bottlenecks. You have to split your tables into multiple channels.,10,Time to go live was [reduced] as scripts and configuration files were reusable across environments. We use it for heterogeneous replication, active-active and active hot standby, and offloading reporting.,Oracle's new AutoCDR (conflict detection and resolution) feature makes setting up active-active replication fairly easy. We were able to setup active-active replication using the AutoCDR feature in a very short time. We had plans for separating reporting and ingestion from our primary DW system. This system generates an excess of 1TB of redo during ingestion. GoldenGates coordinated replicate helped us achieve this almost impossible task with ease. In my previous workplace, for a large telecom company, we had to publish data from the store of records as a service. We used GoldenGate BigData adapters to replicate data to a Kafka endpoint. For quick application failovers, we use GoldenGate Active-Passive replication with connection failover defined in the WebLogic connection settings.,There are certain challenges using the product when the redo generation is in excess of about 120G per hour. For large transaction (more than 10 million records per commit), extract get slower. Some other replication tools do such activities better. Ability to recreate large transaction without breaking the transaction into individual statements may help. There are ways to make this transaction faster, but having the ability to replicate a statement as it was issued on the source may be helpful in some cases.,10,We were able to provide a completely partitioned highly available active-active environment to allow for our critical application to stay continuously available. For our critical data warehouse, which is required to generate compliance reports for the government, we were able to offload a heavy reporting workload to a different database using GoldenGate, which helped us generate our compliance reports in time.,SharePlex,In-houseGoldenGate RocksWe use it to move data between databases to a dw for reporting purposes. We also use it to transform data as it moves, and we use it to populate pdb's to enable our services architecture.,GoldenGate, using CDC, moves data between databases and database technologies to enable near real-time propagation. GoldenGate can transform data as it moves from tables in the same or different databases. GoldenGate can move data between database platforms.,We need more rapid support for bug mitigation. GoldenGate's API needs to allow for streaming from Oracle's cloud databases where we don't have access to the OS.,10,This allowed us to offload our reporting workload to an open database on a cluster otherwise used for DR. This enables a huge cost saving on Oracle CPU licensing and improved performance for our ERP environment.,SharePlex, Oracle Stream Analytics and Informatica Cloud MDM,In-houseThe best replication tool on the marketWe use GoldenGate to replicate some of the data from the production database to a data warehouse. It is used by the IT department. By using GoldenGate we don't impact the production database. We can run queries or reports or any long queries from the replicated database using GoldenGate. At one time we even used GoldenGate as a DR database and replicated entire production database. By doing so, one time when we had an outage and lost the production database, this DR became available to us and switched it to the primary. So we have a lot of advantages when using GoldenGate. We can replicate some tables or all tables and different scenarios of replicating data using functions and triggers. The business problem it addressed was less impact on production databases, more realtime data available to the business without putting an overload on production databases.,Realtime replication and zero data loss. Less lag and more reliable. No downtime for our primary database.,GUI could use a little improvement.,10,Very positive impact and good ROI in the past years we've been using it.,,In-house,We didn't use any implementation partner.Oracle GoldenGate ReviewGoldenGate is being used as a DR solution and as well as a method for replicating from a transactional to reporting DB. It is used across the whole organization. It addresses a need for disaster recovery on different data centers including the cloud.,Replication of data. Easy of set up. Notification of status.,Improvement of collision management. Log dump features could be improved for better ease of use.,7,ROI has been positive to our business.,,In-house,We implemented in-house.GoldenGate for active applications across datacentersWe use Oracle GoldenGate for multiple reasons such as data replication, to maintain active/active databases for critical applications and not but least for database migration with zero downtime. We're happy with the usage and its purposes. It is being used across the whole organization. We use OEM monitoring to alert the monitoring team when there is a lag on the DB sync.,Data replication to keep our data up-to-date and used for reporting purposes. Data migration with zero downtime. Reporting database in real-time replication.,,In-house,N/A,9GoldenGate for building data pipelinesWe have built a data change pipeline using GG technology by plugging in Kafka in front. Also, it's helped us in fault tolerance as a live DR database is readily available in a separate DC in case current DC goes down. In both modes, it's been super helpful to ensure data is sent in an async manner to reporting systems. It's saved us in cases of DC failures.,Data replication in real-time. Fault tolerance. We have a large infrastructure with tons of applications to assign installation and repair jobs to field technicians. In some of the applications, we can't afford latency or replication errors. GoldenGate has been a great tool.,I was able to find what I needed, but it took longer than I think it needed to. The system was navigable, but not until I had training on it. Before that I was clueless on how to find anything. It allows the replication in real time from the Oracle database in RAC to the contingency database, through the immediate replication of the data in the redo logs, without the need to wait for them to be written at the level of the archive logs. You can have multiple different data sources coming into this Oracle GoldenGate. You are not limited to only Oracle databases.,The time that it takes to implement Oracle GoldenGate. Because you can have multiple databases going through it it can take a long time to set it up. It was more complicated than it needed to be. Without the training I feel that it isn't intuitive. I think maybe the structure should be reinvented so that it is more intuitive. GoldenGate replication is only for databases, it would be nice to use it across file and folders,7,Using Oracle GoldenGate for modifying data transformation as it replicates, this is very key if you need your data to appear a certain way, especially important in reporting. GoldenGate also allows us to have the data visualizations that helps management at meetings to see what is happening at a higher level. It performs auto CDR in active setups. Tuning Golden Gate is fairly very simple. Golden Gate is very fast in catching up the lag.,Where there are open transactions GoldenGate needs to auto-detect them. GoldenGate should have dba views like Oracle Database. Patching or upgrading GoldenGate is a bit complicated. When extract or pump trail file sequence number is about to reach the max limit, we should get a warning or critical threshold alert. When Integrated replicat is altered, it converts to classic replicat. We don't get any message that the replicat is running in classic mode. There should be some sort of alerting in the ggserrlog file.,10,GoldenGate has saved us from penalties by providing 99.999% uptime. The replication of the transactional data in a non-production environment enables us to perform long running queries without affecting the performance of our production systems. We also use the product to create DR environments in our remote locations.,Transactional integrity between the source and target. This is extremely important as anyone would imagine when talking about a DR target. High-performance capability. There is no impact on the production side of the environment. There is support for one to many topologies such that one source can be used to create multiple targets.,The earlier versions of Golden Gate were complex to use as there was no front end. All that works was the command line. The cost of the product can be a detriment to most companies. The product has been augmented over the years and has so many features that it can be overwhelming.,8,It has enabled us to create non-Oracle environments with data captured via the Oracle database. We can guarantee zero downtime because of the bi-directional capability of the product. We can use the product to go from a higher version of the Oracle Data Base to an earlier version (11g to 10g).,Yes,,Excel4apps, Kofax CaptureUndoubtedly the best database replication solution in marketI have been using Oracle GoldenGate since 2011, 2 years right after Oracle acquired the company. It was an awesome project back then with version 10, but Oracle has continued adding tonnes of features to it ever since and this is just the best replication solution I have worked with. I have done all kinds of replication using Oracle GoldenGate. Be it homogeneous, heterogeneous, unidirectional, bidirectional, on premise, on cloud (Oracle Public Cloud), integrating with JMS (Java Messaging System) - we have done it all. We have loved the product so much that we have over years replaced all our existing replication infrastructure using Oracle GoldenGate. I love that you can perform changes in almost zero downtime, replicate millions of data in sub seconds and their is large online documentations and forums to help you with troubleshooting any problems. This doesn't requires a lot of expertise to begin with and overtime, you will love working on it. Oracle GoldenGate now also comes with many GUI based tools like OGG Studio, OGG Director, OGG Monitor and OGG Veridata. These come with additional cost, but are great add-ons. We implemented Oracle GoldenGate on at least 400 database environments. We have a large infrastructure with tonnes of applications to assign installation and repair jobs to field technicians. In some of the applications, we can't afford latency or replication errors. GoldenGate has been a great tool.,Oracle GoldenGate lets you replicate data in homogeneous, heterogeneous, unidirectional, bidirectional, on premise , on cloud (Oracle Public Cloud). You can integrate Oracle GoldenGate with non relational database systems like JMS (Java Messaging System). You can also generate flat files in real time and feed into systems like a data lake.,I am an Oracle GoldenGate fan, so it's hard to say what I dislike about it. But yes, I would have loved if it was easier to find syntax errors in your GoldenGate commands. Sometimes it just tells you ambiguous generic error messages for a syntax error. Oracle GoldenGate sometimes gives you too many ways to do the same thing. It makes it slightly confusing for less experienced people to choose among different options available. logdump utility is great to view a trail file being replicated, but it is not straight forward and easy to understand. It requires a lot of technical knowledge to read through a trail file using log dump utility. This can be made better.,10,Oracle GoldenGate, being an Oracle tool, is slightly on the expensive side compared to similar tools offered by vendors like Dell. We still chose to replace all our existing replication infrastructure with Oracle GoldenGate for the ease of implementation and sophisticated features very well apt for our complex business requirements. Our customers have been extremely satisfied with our GoldenGate implementations.,No,SharePlex,Oracle Enterprise Manager, Oracle Database 12c, HP 3PAR StoreServ Flash StorageDifferent Source Systems (IBM DB2, Microsoft SQL Server) Are Supported For Real Time Replication.Replicated source system data seamlessly flew in our Operational Data Store (ODS). Different types of source systems (IBM DB2, Microsoft SQL Server) are supported for real time replication. With the upgrade, I now am able to replicate Big Data solution from any supported source system to Hadoop clusters.,Ease of installation Ease of maintenance Powerful output with sub-second speed Supporting Big Data and Cloud environment Capturing source data based on transnational log, no cost on source CPU Handle the distribution and the delivery of committed data in real-time Supports heterogeneous systems regarding target or source database Can be implemented uni-directional, bi-directional or peer-to-peer mode Zero downtime migration Supports data distribution Can be used for disaster recovery or data protection,Oracle GoldenGate Studio could be more user-friendly. It would be better for Oracle Golden Gate Studio GUI to include other OGG related licensed products (i.e. Veridata or others).,10,In earlier versions, DDL support was limited as well as the need of primary key constraints in the source tables. This made me create partitions, sub-partitions, truncatations and perform other operations upon they are performed in source systems and I need to discuss with source system administrators and need to convince them to let them create primary keys for replicated tables. But both issues are solved now. Installation is straightforward, easy. Deployed everything within Oracle Data Integrator. Developing 1000 of ODI interfaces for loading into Operational Data Store took not more than 100 man/days. But, adding them to Golden Gate is taking not more than 5 man/days. We have many ERP products that need to integrate with custom applications designed to support our IT infrastructure. We decided to use Oracle GoldenGate as a means of keeping data in sync between our ERP system and a temporary data-cache. It offers real-time replication of data between different database systems.,I think it's a very useful tool that can provide live transactional data across heterogeneous environments. Oracle GoldenGate allows you to configure data mapping between different tables using simple configuration files.,The licensing agreement that we had for GoldenGate did not include an admin visual console to monitor the different replication processes in real time. Once a replication process gets abended due to some data load error, the product does not skip onto the next record to continue replication. This was one feature we really needed.,6,We found this product really useful since it allowed us to keep two different data stores in sync. It freed us from conducting expansive querying of our live data base, and instead just using the data-cache store instead.,Informatica Messaging,NetBeans, Sophos Endpoint ProtectionGolden gate use case for disaster recoveryWe have been successfully using Goldengate to sync our prod and disaster recovery environments for over a year. It decreased the time to sync and increased reliability. We are very happy with it.,Disaster recovery sync, faster than other products like shareplex. Integration features, we are looking at using it to sync other DBs and move data around. Future use case is to offload data to Cassandra.,Ability to help migrate between different versions of Oracle could be improved. Possible compression of data to help with transfers across data centers. Cost is a little high.,9,Decreased sync times by 75% helping protect business interests. Cost is an impact to expense budget. Future use of syncing to no SQL databases will help speed up processing by 50% or more based on tests and allow us to do a migration. GoldenGate fulfilled our needs of having a reliable means of extracting live data from multiple heterogeneous databases and feed into an EDW. In that sense, it's an invaluable tool for the report writers and business analysts across the organization. There are some hiccups here and there, mostly having to do with some data transformations and certain long transactions, but overall, it performs reliably well and better than other alternative replication products we're tried.,GoldenGate can handle multiple database vendors (SQL Server, Sybase, DB2, Enscribe, etc.) and replicate data in real-time. It's flexible and can perform data transformation/cleansing on the fly when you provide the mapping file for it. Exceptionally good error handling and data collision handling. Over some years, we have some large tables with 10 million records or more, and have seen only a very few records missing/incorrect. Good support responses. GoldenGate was well-supported when it was an independent company, and even though Oracle acquired it, it still has a good support organization.,It's expensive. And I believe you have to purchase a license for each type of source and/or target DB that you're trying to replicate. It will be slow for a single transaction that updates a large number of rows. It's better to break up such transactions into batches and run them in a loop with periodic commits (Batch Insert or Batch Update). It's buggy when reading SQL Server transaction logs; may cause an abend.,9,It's a single product that can connect to multiple types of databases, so the learning curve will be smaller and can help your organization standardize on your reporting platform. It serves our business needs of having a "single source of truth". Real-time replication means more up-to-the-minute reporting. There are certain reports that the users want more than just having last night's data.,Oracle Streams and SharePlex,SharePlexExpensive but not worth on DB2We are using Oracle GoldenGate to replicate data between data centers.,It supports multiple data sources including IBM/Oracle/Microsoft Natively supports Oracle, but not DB2 Has the flexibility for CDR,No GUI Hard to manage Lots of BUGS on IBM DB2, does not even support timestamp on extract Performance is BAD on IBM DB2 for replication Trail file has bad data sometimes Hard to refresh table for IBM DB2 Production support is very slow and bad,1,Lots of failures on the replication, we have to shutdown [our] site as the replication cannot catch up.,,DB2Oracle GoldenGate, it's not just for Oracle DBs anymore! At a previous job, bi-directional Oracle GoldenGate replication was used to support a highly available application model. It was used across the whole IT DBA organization. At my current position Oracle GoldenGate is being used in a uni-directional manner to replicate data from 10 different application databases to an ERP platform that is used for our enterprise reporting needs, this also helps in offloading the reporting from the application databases.,Replication. Oracle GoldenGate's strength is it's main feature, replication. GoldenGate is able to quickly replicate transactions in a method that maintains transactional integrity and give you a like to like replica on the other side. Transformation. Oracle GoldenGate is able to do some data transformation as it replicates, this is very key if you need your data to appear a certain way, especially important in Reporting. Recoverability. Oracle GoldenGate has many fail safes to ensure data is not lost, some examples of this are trail files its own system of recording changes that works with the DB SCN. Multiple Data Sources/Targets. Oracle GoldenGate is not limited to just Oracle Databases as a target it can support most of the popular databases in the industry today such as SQL Server, MySQL, DB2 and more.,Setting Up Oracle GoldenGate as HA in an Oracle RAC environment. While this is possible to do and there is documentation out there, I've found that specific Oracle GoldenGate and Oracle RAC experience is needed in order to make this happen. That level of experience does not exist everywhere. Monitoring Oracle GoldenGate. Currently there are two main options for monitoring Oracle GoldenGate, the first, GoldenGate Monitor, does not scale well as it becomes very non-performant when you have more than 10-15 GoldenGate Managers reporting to it, the second, Oracle Enterprise Manager, while getting better still requires a lot of manual configuration to have Oracle GoldenGate talk to the OEM agent. While this has got a lot better with 12c GoldenGate, I still feel that there is room to improve here. Unable to replicate certain Data Types. Again, less of an issue in 12c Oracle GoldenGate, but there are still some Data Types that Oracle GoldenGate is unable to replicate.,9,Increased Availability. Through using Oracle GoldenGate we were able to completely eliminate customer experienced downtime when applying patches and upgrades to our databases. This led to a increase in our availability numbers company wide for database. The key though was architecting our applications to allow them to work in a multi-site fashion that allowed us to leverage Oracle GoldenGate for this. Being able to move data/processes off of the main application databases to put less strain on those resources. Being able to replicate data from 11 Application DBs to one ERP DB running on Exadata has increased performance on the application databases as they no longer needed to have a report run against them. It also allowed us to create new reports for our customers which has many times over paid for our investment in Oracle GoldenGate.,Oracle Streams,50,10,Enterprise Reporting. Auditing. This was before the OEM Oracle Golden Gate Plugin, so Oracle GoldenGate Monitor was our only alertnative and it became very slow when we started getting a larger Oracle GoldenGate footprint. Configuration. Some of our earliest implementations were some of our most cumbersome, in hindsight it would have been better to begin with easier implementations and work our way up there, but unfortunately the biggest need from the business was in that most challenging implementation. Knowledge distribution. The SMEs for Oracle GoldenGate were very busy and were not able to give the time necessary to properly train the entire team on Oracle GoldenGate, this let to some siloing until the whole team could be brought up to speed through Oracle University Training.,9,Online training In-person training Self-taught,10,10,While you can learn without training, I would not recommend it. The Oracle documentation can only get you so far. If your implementation is very basic you may get away with it, but ultimately it will come back to bite you. I strongly advise getting Oracle GoldenGate Training if at all possible.,9,If installing Oracle GoldenGate on a RAC System, use RAC Services to make it highly available!!!,No - there is no facility to customize the interface,No - we have not done any custom code,No,9,No,Oracle has sent us their best Oracle GoldenGate consultant on multiple occasions, Valerie Bedard. It wasn't easy to set up replication to a message queue using SharePlex. We had challenges using the product when the application was doing a lot of "rollbacks to savepoint". SharePlex always showed a lag.
When I was testing SharePlex, there was no way to offload the workload from the DB server while using it.

Oracle GoldenGate is a data integration and virtualization management solution for all businesses. It offers real time data integration and replication services for IT management. We liked Oracle pricing model since we already have a working relationship with them. Training was also essential in getting the application on-boarded, and Oracle provides a vast amount of material.

I don't believe that there is a product that can match the capabilities of Oracle GoldenGate. As I stated earlier, it has so many use cases because of the ability of the product to handle the logical transformation of data from source to target. It can be used for DR but that is not the most useful feature as data guard do this much cheaper. Creation of data warehouses and reporting databases are a major strength of the product.

SharePlex offers a cheaper alternative and is sometimes faster performing as well for simpler replication needs, but Oracle GoldenGate comes with tonnes of features that I have not seen in any other competing technology. OGG offers real time flat file generation, integration with Java Systems, integration with Big Data and Cloud. OGG also has awesome GUI tools for monitoring and validation. It supports multiple database types and replication topologies.

We chose GoldenGate initially because we have a heterogeneous database environment and it was very difficult to report across different data marts residing on different databases. Not only did it become very hard to maintain, the reports were also inaccurate and hard to compare. GoldenGate helps us to consolidate that into a single reporting environment for all data marts, allowing our business users to quickly report on real-time replicated data.

  • Oracle Streams
Oracle GoldenGate is much faster than Oracle Streams in all of the testing that we did. Oracle Streams is also deprecated as of 12c. There's a reason Oracle went out and purchased GoldenGate, what Oracle GoldenGate is able to do from a replication perspective is amazing. As Oracle GoldenGate gets more and more intertwined in the Oracle world, they keep finding additional efficiencies and more ways to make the replication even faster without sacrificing transaction integrity.
