1. Alerting based on team
2. Escalation Policy
-> Who to message, email, call, notify when the Incident is triggered --> Who to message, email, call, notify, after say 30 mins when the Incident is triggered.
3. Must be acknowledged or else the the SLAs would break.

sometime for troubleshooting a production incident we need to collaborate with different teams across the org and using pagerduty its easy to know which team member from other teams are on-call and its easy to page them and involve them in the troubleshooting process.

Using event rules to filter and correctly align incoming alerts and assign to correct service impacted.
Slack and MS teams integrations enables different teams and team members to align and resolve the issue together.
Runbook automations are then used to inform the stakeholders and teams involved on the ongoing issues and provide timely updates.

PagerDuty is our first response platform. Therefore, all alerts and events flow through the platform first before being escalated to a person. All events stream in to the front-end UI and are picked up manually by our tier 1 staff. If the tier 1 staff decide the problem requires immediate escalation to a higher tier team member, they will invoke an escalation policy for the appropriate resource. The higher tier staff decide how they want to be notified when a low or high priority incident is escalated to them i.e. notifications via phone, email, text and push notification or some combination of them all. PagerDuty is our system of record for all events and alerts. A separate tool is used for our incident system of record. We have build a webhook that will generate an incident in our ITSM platform.

We used Automic for some of our nightly automation, which had run decks integrating into various systems to mirror our production systems into our dev environment to keep the environments 1:1. Often, something would stall, and we would need to be notified so a tech can connect, and we can restart a process. Similar processes are used so to import bank and financial information, and the consequence of the automation not going through would have a major monetary impact on the business. PD came through every time, so we could get things back on track!

Some services are not business critical and therefore, the alerts can be configured to only send notifications during working hours. Whereas other services need to be reviewed immediately in the event of downtime and can be configured to send a notification and then escalations if no acknowledgement is given.

Whenever a security incident happens, we file a Jira ticket and then it automatically triggers an alert to our on-call based on the on-call schedule in the pagerduty application. Once the alerts are delivered, they are acknowledged by the security engineer, and then they pick up the Jira ticket issue and start working on them to quickly fix the security issue. The security engineer may leverage pagerduty to identify on-call of other product teams to bring them online and start working on the IR (incident response) part.

we are not using the fully automation response from PagerDuty however we are using it for playbooks i.e.. for most of the alerts which we know will be come incidents we have playbooks created for them on how to resolve those alerts , now what we have done is we have used Alert Rules in PagerDuty and updated all tickets with appropriate playbooks , so now whenever an incident comes in it comes with playbooks and then the operations team can use that playbook to resolve the alert.

In our organization we utilize PagerDuty to manage our on call rotation which is soley responsible for incident response and mitigation. PagerDuty allows us to send alerts in a tiered system which will first alert the first line of help desk technicians of on outage. From there, using PagerDuty software, a technician from their mobile phone can chose to accept the outage or escalate. They can also give the "all-clear" straight from PagerDuty with which will also send the communication out to the rest of business.
