Users of Panopto have found the software to be incredibly versatile for a wide range of use cases. From recording events, presentations, and demonstrations to capturing impromptu meetings, Panopto offers flexibility and convenience for content creation. Faculty and students have embraced the platform as a tool to provide anytime-anywhere access to educational content, aligning with the growing popularity of the flipped classroom paradigm. With Panopto's recording capabilities, students can control their individual progress by pausing, replaying, and adjusting playback speed, enhancing their learning experience. The software's availability for all users at UMBC, including faculty, staff, and students, further demonstrates its broad appeal in various academic settings.

Panopto's features extend beyond traditional lecture capture, serving as a versatile screencasting platform that enables users to record lectures, tutorials, how-to videos, and more. The software has been used extensively to archive webinars and organize/distribute training content. Its quick and easy media content capture and distribution capabilities cater to users with varying internet speeds and environments. Notably, Panopto has been adopted by an increasing number of staff members for recording lectures and creating short videos for students. Furthermore, dispersed student groups across different campuses have greatly benefited from the accessibility of Panopto, particularly when it comes to accessing assignment information and grappling with challenging teaching concepts. Overall, Panopto has transformed teaching and learning experiences across institutions by increasing engagement with students through searchable video recordings that greatly enhance their learning journey.

Users commonly recommend using Panopto for educational or lecture-based settings. They suggest considering it as an affordable solution for storing Zoom recordings. Additionally, they recommend taking advantage of Panopto's features, such as the notes feature for taking notes at specific times in a video, and its ability to share live streams and organize lectures with supporting materials. It is also advised to evaluate other tools before choosing Panopto, as some users have experienced performance issues on OSX. Users also recommend upgrading the support package for more end-user support and following Panopto's hardware recommendations for better compatibility. Furthermore, users praise Panopto's support, feature set, and ease of use. They suggest exploring its features through a trial and taking advantage of customer service. However, it is important to note that Panopto is not a professional editing tool. Users also appreciate the ease of use and video editing features in Panopto and find it helpful for managing and sharing educational content. They suggest checking the group before sharing content and offering training when implementing Panopto or onboarding new team members. Furthermore, users find Panopto to be a valuable lecture capture solution for easily reviewing lectures or meetings. To effectively use Panopto, users advise watching training videos and having tech support available. They also recommend Panopto for capturing tribal knowledge or educational content and suggest laying out a clean and organized structure while understanding how permissions work in the platform. We have a sitewide license to Panopto for video hosting and playback. We have the lecture capture installed in many of the large classrooms, but not across campus. Panopto provides the hosting and streaming needs for courses and the campus. The ability to control the entire library, schedule recordings, and manage sharing and branding is the key advantage over using something like YouTube.
  • Recording lectures.
  • Playback with multiple sources to pick.
  • Pricing.
  • User Interface and Design.
  • Backend management.
  • Analytics.
In the higher education market, the choices tend to boil down to Panopto or Kaltura. Panopto has a robust lecture capture system that supports a wide range of formats and inputs. The ability for the student to select the source they want to see (slides, camera view, etc.) for the lecture makes it much easier to "set it and forget it." The live transcription and searching within the video also are valuable tools. Panopto is not nearly as well polished in the backend as Kaltura (especially after Kaltura's most recent backend overhaul). On the support end, Panopto's role permission and sharing options are confusing. Its integration with the LMS is not as robust as Kaltura's, and its analytics are lacking. Panopto was more cost-effective than Kaltura.

  • Panopto's pricing model was better for our organization's needs than Kaltura.
  • Panopto has met our needs, but not exceeded them.
  • Development seems stagnant.
Kaltura is sleeker and more polished, both on the user-facing and backend. Panopto has been doing in-class lecture capture for longer, but Kaltura's new(er) offering is catching up. Kaltura was easier and more intuitive for faculty and instructors in many ways. Panopto is still ahead on the quality of lecture capture, in-video searching, and editing. However, the "personal lecture capture" of Panopto is terrible and Kaltura's is way better, if that's important to your users.
Panopto has been quick to answer any questions, but their rollouts and updates have caused issues where we felt a little blindsided by unexpected changes. Their development cycle is slow and often their promises for future updates have been extremely slow or never come.

We replaced TechSmith Relay with Panopto. It is set up to use in Canvas, our LMS, as an LTI. One of the main features we switched to Panopto for was the automated closed captioning of videos, to help make our videos accessibility compliant.
  • You can create quizzes to add to your videos as the viewer watches the videos, which can be automatically graded and in Canvas. These grades will post to the Gradebook.
  • There is automated closed captioning to make your videos accessible for hearing impaired viewers.
  • It has a built-in editor where you can cut, paste, and insert Powerpoints and Youtube videos into the video timeline in addition to the quizzes!
  • The automated closed captioning feature works pretty well. It can be off though... and when it's off, it can very off. Luckily you have the ability to go in and edit anything it translated from what it "thought" you said into what you "actually" said.
  • The timeline editor is web-based and not as fluid or functional like something like Final Cut, etc. You need to be on the spot of the timeline where you want to add a Quiz or content before you go to add it. If not, it will add it to where you were on the timeline when going to the video. I've added content to the beginning of the video by mistake a few times.
  • The Quiz feature is nice, but there need to be more options on the types of questions that can be added to a Quiz.
Panopto is great added to Canvas if you'd like a good screen capture program to add videos to courses. It offers the ability to add quizzes and make your videos have closed captioning, which is very good when making your content accessible for viewers with hearing impairments. It offers a timeline editor where you can add things like Powerpoint, Youtube videos, and quizzes directly into your videos. The quizzes can be taken while watching the video and in Canvas, you can choose to have it add a grade in the grade book for taking a quiz that is incorporated into the video, which is pretty nice. It isn't a fully functional polished video editor though. More like an enhanced screen capture program with a few bells and whistles.

  • It has helped make video content in Canvas Accessibility compliant without having to hire/pay transcribers to make the closed captioning for the video.
  • It is a more advanced screen capture program than we previously used, which has more editing ability and additional features.
  • The main negative is everyone wants to learn how to use it now, and the training we need to provide! Not really a negative to be honest, it's just more people are interested in the program because of all its features. :-)
Camtasia, now TechSmith Relay, is also a screen capture program. It is very basic and just captures the screen. Panopto allows you to edit your videos more, create quizzes to incorporate into the videos, and can automatically create closed captioning for your videos, which TechSmith Relay cannot.

Better and additional features, and a good price value.
So far, we are happy with Panopto given the limited availability of products available.
They are responsive to questions.
  • Starting the recordings.
  • Adding Quizzes
  • The video timeline editor.
Yes
It's ok. Basic.
Needs some work, but I'm sure improvements will come over time.
  • Canvas LMS
It's embedded into all our courses. We had some issues with configuring video directories in the best way for classes.
  • File import/export
  • Single Signon
  • API (e.g. SOAP or REST)
Didn't seem to cause those who added it to Canvas TOO much grief.
